In the fallout of the original Secret Wars at Marvel Comics, Hawkeye realized that due to his skills and weapons, he's not on the same level as Spider-Man when it comes to his usefulness in saving heroes against massive cosmic threats. In Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars, readers saw both sides of Clint Barton's confidence as a hero, as he first saw himself as "just a guy in a funny suit" in the conflict before being irrationally confident later in the storyline.

The original Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars from Jim Shooter, Mike Zeck, and Bob Layton featured the villain the Beyonder gathering the greatest heroes and villains from Earth and having them fight one another on a constructed planet known as Battleworld. The Secret Wars crossover saw the debut of Spider-Man's symbiote suit, which would later become Venom, and ended with the status quo being reset in the Marvel Universe. However, one of the best running gags in the series was Spider-Man checking on Hawkeye, who was just trying to help despite his lack of superpowers.

In Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars, as the heroes band together to figure out a way to return home, Spider-Man checks in with Hawkeye. Clint Barton reveals that since Mister Fantastic used the last of his more advanced arrows "jazzing up Iron Man's armor," leading Peter Parker to reveal his web-shooters were also cannibalized in a similar manner. Furthermore, it leads Hawkeye to admit that at least he's "still Spider-Man without the webs" while accepting without his arrows and no powers, he's "just a guy in a funny suit." In a later issue calling back to the interaction, Hawkeye seems to have regained his confidence, as when Spidey asks him if he's making another arrow, Barton confidently responds, "one last one... with Galactus's name on it!"

Hawkeye Spider-Man Marvel Comics

Considering he was taken to a gladiator-like planet during Secret Wars alongside the greatest heroes and villains on Earth, where their powers were tested, Hawkeye was frustrated that he had to give up his most advanced weapons to power others. As a result, he lamented being just a guy in a suit without his best arrows. However, thankfully, when Spider-Man visited the hero again, Hawkeye seemed to regain his confidence, even if he previously admitted he was pathetic without his arrows.

In the end, the encounters on Battleworld between Spider-Man and Hawkeye in Secret Wars showed both sides of the arrow-wielding hero. Initially frustrated his arrows were taken from him, Hawkeye threw a pity party about his effectiveness without them - believing he was nothing without them. Alongside gods, sorcerers, and mutants, losing the one thing that made him considered near their level had to be tough. However, Hawkeye eventually realized he wasn't as pathetic as he seemed, finding a second gear and telling Spider-Man he would fight in the strange new world, even without his most powerful weapons. Clint Barton knew he could help in his own way.
