Hawkeye star Jeremy Renner explains why he believes the Marvel character is best fit for a Disney+ series. Renner has played the character of Clint Barton/Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over a decade, with the archer making his MCU debut in 2011's Thor as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent tasked with preventing Thor from retrieving his hammer. Since then, Renner has appeared in a number of Marvel projects, ranging from three of the four Avengers films to Captain America: Civil War, and he even provided some voice work for the animated Disney+ series What If...? earlier this year.

After a decade of playing the Avenger as a supporting character, Renner is finally getting the chance to shine in the lead role of the upcoming Hawkeye series for Disney+. The show, which premieres its first two episodes on November 24, will see Clint team up with and mentor a talented, young archer named Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld). The first reactions to Hawkeye have praised it as a smaller, street-level entry in the MCU, with Renner and Steinfeld both giving stellar performances.

In a recent interview with Collider, Renner explains why Hawkeye is a perfect fit for the miniseries format. When asked if he was surprised when Feige approached him with the project, he reveals it had been a topic of conversation between them, and he was always excited about the idea. He explains that the six-episode series allowed Marvel to really delve into the character in a way they hadn't in the MCU movies. Check out Renner's full quote below:

We had talked about that. I talked about it with Kevin [Feige] at Marvel, and I was really excited. He said, “What do you think about doing a limited series on Hawkeye?” I was like, “I think that’s exactly where he needs to live.” He’s a character that we’ve now spent a lot of time with, but we don’t know a lot about. We can spend a little bit longer in the longer form storytelling of at all, to have a greater understanding of Clint Barton, and why he is what he is and who he is and where he comes from, and that type of thing. I was very excited to explore Clint Barton in a six-episode thing.

Hailee Steinfeld as Kate Bishop in Hawkeye

Renner continues by saying it was nice to learn more about the world and backstory of Hawkeye. Clint Barton is the character Renner has come back to the most throughout his impressive career, and he says that he had more confidence going into the show as a result of already having so much experience with the character. He says, "It's nice to know information and it's nice to know how to challenge the information for the story. There was a comfortability already, going in, so then that was nice."

At first, some fans were confused as to why Hawkeye was being made as a streaming series rather than a movie, like his Avengers teammate Natasha Romanoff received with Black Widow. But fans have gradually warmed up to the idea as a result of the perfect casting of Steinfeld as Kate Bishop and the movie-level quality of Marvel's other live-action Disney+ shows, WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki. Now, the holiday-themed Hawkeye series is gearing up to be another big hit for Disney's streaming service. And it's likely to set up further MCU expansion with the newly announced Echo spin-off, as well as inevitable future plans for Kate Bishop.
