The Hawkeye trailer has confirmed that Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) will be suiting up as Ronin in the MCU. This was one of the trailer’s surprises, considering that Bishop has a reputation as the purple-clad successor to Hawkeye. The trailer for Clint Barton’s upcoming Disney+ series has made it clear that the MCU has yet to move on from Ronin, which represented a dark phase that Hawkeye went through after the snap. And while Hawkeye himself did leave his Ronin identity behind in Avengers: Endgame, the trailer reveals that someone else will be wearing his old costume and taking to the streets as a vigilante.

Based on what’s shown, that appears to be what motivates Earth’s Mightiest Marksman to get back into action and cross paths with the new Ronin (and Hawkeye replacement) Kate Bishop. Of course, there’s no question that she’ll become the second Hawkeye at some point in the series, but “Ronin” is apparently where it all starts for her.

Bishop choosing to become Ronin and not Hawkeye (despite her pre-existing archery skills) speaks to what kind of place her character is in at the start of the series. Barton originally created “Ronin” when he had nothing left and was on a bloody crusade against gangsters. So, to the public, Ronin is less of a superhero and more of a cold-blooded vigilante who kills criminals. With this in mind, it could be that Bishop is on a similar path. Instead of taking issue with what Barton did in Endgame, she may see him as a model for what she needs to do to accomplish her goal.

Ronin in Hawkeye

Before deciding to assume the Hawkeye identity, Bishop may become Ronin to pursue gangsters who wronged her family in some way. A tragedy in Bishop’s MCU backstory could make vengeance her original motivation for crime-fighting. If so, what kicked this off could have something to do with her mother Eleanor (played by Vera Farmiga). It may be that she’s a villain or perhaps someone who Bishop wants to rescue. For the time being, Eleanor's real role in the show is being kept under wraps and is likely heavily connected to Bishop’s Hawkeye story.

Either way, Bishop using Barton’s Ronin costume to get revenge or kill gangsters could make sense of why Hawkeye ultimately takes Bishop under his wing, regardless of his obvious reservations. In the Hawkeye trailer, Barton is clearly ashamed of the things he did as Ronin between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which is why he’d have a big problem with someone finding inspiration in his mistakes. If Barton feels some degree of responsibility for the direction taken by Bishop, he could seek to help her find a better way forward. By sharing a team-up with him, Kate Bishop could evolve from Ronin into a brand-new version of Hawkeye in Phase 4 of the MCU.
