Hawkeye executive producer Trinh Tran states that one of the central points of the series will be how Clint Barton processes Natasha Romanoff's death. The show will follow Jeremy Renner's retired Avenger as he teams up with Hailee Steinfeld's young archer Kate Bishop. The latest Marvel Disney+ series will have a two-episode premiere on November 24.

Picking up after Avengers: Endgame, Hawkeye sees Barton pulled back into action once more when a vigilante punishing villains during the holiday season is mistaken for his Ronin identity. Leaving his family behind with a promise that he'll be home for Christmas, Barton discovers Bishop is his imitator and teams up with the rookie crimefighter, guiding her on her path to become a hero in her own right. Hawkeye is set to not only position Kate as Clint's successor, but also introduce other characters, such as Maya Lopez/Echo (Alaqua Fox), who will star in her own spin-off. However, the show's executive producer has promised that the series will address one of the most impactful moments in Clint's life.

Speaking to Variety during the Hawkeye launch event, Tran was asked if the show would address the sacrifice of Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow in Avengers: Endgame. She confirms that Clint is still dealing with the emotional fallout from Natasha's death, and that establishing the state of his grief is a central aspect of the project early on. The impact of the loss of his best friend, she says, will be felt throughout Hawkeye's six episodes:

And that actually is one of our central points at the start of the series, is really showing what he's still dealing with emotionally, losing his best friend Nat from Endgame. And we do go through that and carry that through the rest of the series.

Clint will not be the show's only character affected by Natasha's death, as Florence Pugh will reprise her Black Widow role as her de-facto sister, Yelena Belova. Black Widow's post-credits scene saw Yelena paying respects to her fallen sister's grave, only to be interrupted by Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who hands her a dossier on Clint and tells her she has an opportunity to kill the man responsible for Natasha's death. Yelena was the latest questionable hero met by Val, who previously recruited John Walker (Wyatt Russell) in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Much like how WandaVision explored Wanda Maximoff's (Elizabeth Olsen) grief following the loss of Vision (Paul Bettany), and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showed Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) processing Steve Rogers' (Chris Evans) departure, Hawkeye will see Clint adjusting to a post-Endgame world. Clint and Natasha had saved each other time and time again and were close enough that his children considered her an aunt, so her loss would greatly impact his life. His new Disney+ show can not only allow him to say a proper goodbye to Natasha, but give the fallen Avenger a greater send-off than Avengers: Endgame offered.
