Warning! Spoilers ahead for Hawkeye episodes 1 and 2.

One of the most divisive Clint Barton storylines from Avengers: Age of Ultron is undone in Hawkeye. The 2015 Marvel Studios movie planted set up the hero's potential as a mentor. Now, this particular story element is coming to fruition as Clint takes Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) under his wing. But aside from that, Avengers: Age of Ultron also included the debut of Hawkeye's secret family, which drew various kinds of reactions from fans.

When Clint was introduced in MCU Phase 1 via Kenneth Branagh's Thor film, it wasn't revealed that he has a family. It wasn't until Avengers: Age of Ultron that the Bartons were introduced after the Avengers were forced to take refuge in their secret farm while they figured out what to do with Ultron (voiced by James Spader). The introduction of his family became a core aspect of Hawkeye's MCU storyline, as he repeatedly attempted to retire so he could spend time with them over the years. Unfortunately for Barton, the MCU has provided plenty of events that pulled him back into his superhero life. The same thing happens in Hawkeye, as what is supposed to be a fun trip to New York with Clint's kids quickly turns into a dangerous mission. This time, however, Clint is teamed up with Kate as they deal with the Tracksuit Mafia.

Clint's attempt to spend quality time with his kids was a great way to emphasize the fact that aside from being an Avenger, he's also a devoted family man. In Hawkeye episode 1 titled "Never Meet Your Heroes," they all went to see "Rogers: The Musical," which was perhaps more entertaining for those watching the show than the in-universe family, prompting them to instead see some of the big city. As charming as this was, it also subtly undoes the idea of Hawkeye having a secret family. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, the revelation that he has a wife and kids was a massive surprise to his teammates and the audience. While others were thrilled by the surprise, there were critics who didn't like it all simply because the farmhouse scenes bogged down the film; there were also arguments that it was totally unnecessary to the plot. It's worth noting that even until Avengers: Endgame, their existence was kept on the down-low, with only his teammates and allies knowing about them. Now, he's openly bringing his children to public functions, which means that he doesn't have any intentions of keeping them hidden.

Aside from simply undoing what's been established in Avengers: Age of Ultron, there could also be deadly ramifications to Clint's family being out in the open now. It puts them directly in danger. Granted that they live on a secluded farm, Hawkeye's numerous mafia enemies could find a way to track them down and hurt them in an effort to exact revenge on the Barton patriarch. This is relevant now more than ever as Clint's past as Ronin is coming back to haunt him. This means that not only are Avengers villains coming after him and his family, but crime groups that he battled on the heels of Thanos' (Josh Brolin) snap such as the Tracksuit Mafia, as well. Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), who blames Clint for the death of Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) in Vormir could also target his family instead of him.

Clint's main goal in the Hawkeye series is to come home in time for Christmas. Chances are that he would be able to do that with the help of Kate. What lies ahead for Hawkeye after that is unknown. But whatever his future story is in the MCU, Clint Barton's family are sure to be an important factor in his journey in Phase 4 and beyond.
