In Marvel Comics, the Avengers' Clint Barton experienced quite a shock when he returned to life to discover a very different world than he left behind, complete with a new Hawkeye he'd never met. Kate Bishop had taken up his legacy during her time on the Young Avengers. When Captain America and Iron Man refused to train the team and ordered them to disband, Kate used her family's money to give the team a headquarters as well as new costumes and equipment. After standing up to Captain America over the team's lack of training, she was gifted Clint's old bow by Steve Rogers, along with his request to take his deceased friend's code name. Unfortunately, Clint's return meant Kate still had to win her hero's approval to keep it.

Kate Bishop first appeared in Young Avengers #1 (2005) as the Olympic-level archer daughter of a wealthy family, but she only crossed paths with Clint in Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America #3, during his unsuccessful attempt to be the next Captain America. Not knowing she was speaking to the former Hawkeye, Kate was pivotal in convincing Clint that this was not the way to honor the deceased Steve Rogers, causing him to quit and eventually join the New Avengers as the latest Ronin.

Clint returned as Ronin to pass his own judgement on his replacement in Young Avengers Presents #6 (2008) by Matt Fraction and Alan Davis. Clint interrupts a complicated date between Kate and teammate Elijah Bradley, testing her combat skills before giving her a location and telling her to come alone with only her bow. The next day, Kate arrives at the New Avengers headquarters where she officially meets her predecessor, surprised to see that he's not deceased anymore and eager to prove herself. When Kate states that he'll never make an impossible shot, Clint decides to bet his bow and code name, reminding Kate they still belong to him.

HAWKEYE Young Avengers Presents

Matt Fraction laid down the groundwork for a wonderful partnership that would later be explored in his 2012 Hawkeye series by pitting the classic Hawkeye against the current generation of Marvel superheroes. Although Kate is hesitant to give up her precious bow, something that was given under the impression Clint was dead, Clint states that he'll attempt the shot with the most mediocre equipment possible. Agreeing that if he misses, she'll keep everything and the Avengers will keep their distance, Fraction shows Barton's confidence and ability to take this and make it a life lesson. The entire issue sees Kate struggling with her feelings for Elijah, worried how that will effect the team and their working relationship, and Clint sees it as Kate's hesitance to take a shot.  He advises her to take any shot that matters without hesitation, nailing his shot before telling her to leave the bow and that it's been great knowing her.

After getting chewed out by her teammates, the embarrassed Hawkeye gets help breaking into the building in order to get her bow back. Unfortunately, her rescue mission is interrupted by the arrival of Clint and Luke Cage, where Clint talks the exhausted hero's ear off about the Young Avengers before realizing Kate is nearby. Within hearing distance, Clint gives his approval of the young superhero team, admitting that they are the future even if they could use a little guidance now and then. He later interrupts Kate's archery practice to return the bow, officially giving it and the Hawkeye name to her with his blessing. According to the former Hawkeye, the Avengers are about legacy and it's the Young Avengers and Kate Bishop's turn, with Clint and the other Avengers supporting them all the way; an attitude that has kept the bond between the two strong ever since.
