A cool new fan-created poster sets up Jeremy Renner in his own Avengers: Infinity War spinoff as Ronin. Rumors have been fairly persistent about the bow-wielding marksman assuming a new alter-ego since set photos revealed a new suit and haircut for Hawkeye. The fact that he continues to be absent from any of the previews for the upcoming Joe and Anthony Russo-directed flick only fans the flames of speculation from fans. But while everyone is pretty understanding of the situation, some are understandably irked by his continued absence in any new promos and even earlier released tie-in merch.
We know that prior to the events of Infinity War, Clint is already a retired superhero thanks to the release of the Avengers: Infinity War Prelude comics which basically catches up on what everyone has been doing since we last saw them. Despite his initial attempts to walk away from his world-saving gig by the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, the marksman still dabbled in the conflict between Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) in Captain America: Civil War leading to his Raft imprisonment. But after the super soldier busted all of his crew out from the high-security detention, Hawkeye apparently decided to come home to his secret family and part ways with everyone else. How he takes up his new gig as a more ruthless fighter in Ronin is still a mystery, but we do have a theory about that.
Perhaps bummed that there is still no Hawkeye in the new Infinity War spot that aired during Super Bowl LII, an artist with the Twitter handle SG Posters decided to take it upon herself to reimagine Clint as Ronin in his own spin-off film. The monochromatic poster features Renner sporting his cool mohawk and wearing a Japanese robe-like ensemble. Completing his look is the Katana he's holding. Check out the nifty artwork below:
It's a pretty clever idea, especially with Black Widow supposedly getting her own standalone in a few years. Both characters have been getting the shorter ends of the stick despite being part of the original Avengers crew. That said, that exact statement makes the next two Marvel ensemble flicks especially dangerous for Clint. While we already know that he will assume some version of Ronin in the big screen, it could also mark the beginning of his path towards his death. With the catastrophic nature of the next twin Avengers sequels, the films will expectedly see the end of several principal MCU heroes, including Hawkeye, who debuted in the first Thor film.
The notion that Hawkeye will evolve to become Ronin (in whichever way) in Avengers: Infinity War or its still-untitled sequel is proof that the Russsos are planning to create a personal story arc for him in the films. However, whether Clint gets to live past MCU Phase 3 or not remains to be seen. If anything, there isn't any scarcity of stories from the pages of the comic books that Marvel can mine inspiration from if they decide to further his arc as the masterless samurai which could fit with the other possible stories for Phase 4. Nevertheless, fans can only hope that he gets the limelight that he deserves.
