Executive producer Trinh Tran and actress Hailee Steinfeld explain Clint Barton and Kate Bishop’s dynamic in Hawkeye. Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ series, Hawkeye, will mark the first solo MCU project for Jeremy Renner’s eponymous archer alongside an arrow-slinging apprentice, Kate Bishop (Steinfeld). It will also star Vera Farmiga as Bishop’s mother, Eleanor, Zahn McClarnon, Brian d'Arcy James, Tony Dalton, Alaqua Cox, Fra Fee as new characters, and Florence Pugh reprising her Black Widow role of Yelena Belova. That film’s post-credits scene saw Yelena manipulated into thinking Clint was responsible for the death of her sister, Natasha Romanoff, in Avengers: Endgame.

Yelena is rumored to be taking over the mantle of Black Widow in the MCU, and in turn, Kate will be training to inherit Clint’s. The Marvel Studios’ series looks to be taking more than a few cues from Matt Fraction and David Aja’s 2013 solo series, My Life As a Weapon, a fan-favorite comic outlining Kate’s first meeting with Clint. Hawkeye will also explore more of Clint’s time as the grief-stricken Ronnin during the events of Endgame, which will likely motive his desire to ride off into the sunset with his family. The series was written by Jonathan Igla (Mad Men, Bridgerton) and helmed by directing duo Bert and Bertie, aka Amber Finlayson and Katie Ellwood.

Now, executive producer Tran and Steinfeld have explained Clint and Kate’s dynamic in the series. Speaking with EW (via u/magikarpcatcher), Tran talked about portraying Clint as a family man who’s “no-nonsense” and pitting him against Kate, “who is super energetic and at times annoying.” Check out Tran and Steinfeld’s full quotes below:

Tran: There’s the family man that we’ve portrayed, a more serious character who is no-nonsense and gets through what he needs to do to accomplish the mission. But here he’s the pit against Kate, who is super energetic and at times annoying. It’s putting the two of them together and seeing what comes out out that.

Steinfeld: “One thing I love so much about the Fraction comics is the banter between them. Jeremy and I definitely established that on a personal level right away...[There is] a similar dynamic with him taking me under his wing and showing me the ropes and then letting me do my thing.”

Clint Barton and Kate Bishop with Lucky the Pizza Dog in Hawkeye

Phase 4’s small screen projects including WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki have all featured at least one dynamic duo at their center. It remains to be seen if Kate and Clint will rival Loki and Mobius, Sam and Bucky, or Wanda and Vision. Regardless, it’ll certainly be different as Kate’s energy and admiration brings out the best in Clint—who’s had a pretty traumatic run in the MCU. New official photos from the Hawkeye series have offered a glimpse into this dynamic, a look a Kate’s costume, and Lucky the Pizza Dog, Clint’s canine in crime from the comics.

Like Loki and What If…?Hawkeye will premiere new episodes every Wednesday beginning November 24, 2021. Hawkeye will consist of six episodes and play a huge role in setting up the MCU’s roster for the foreseeable future. An aspect of Phase 4 seems largely concerned with passing the torch and Hawkeye’s unconventional father/daughter dynamic is aimed at just that. The series’ promotional campaign will be in full swing very soon and fans can’t wait to get a look at Clint and Kate in action.
