Warning: This article contains mild spoilers from Hawkeye episode 6.

Similar to many other Marvel characters, Clint Barton finally received a more comic book accurate costume in the Hawkeye season finale. Throughout his time in the MCU, Clint has primarily worn tactical gear. While these black outfits had few similarities to his comic costumes, they fit the practicality of his MCU character. However, the Hawkeye finale in episode 6 sees the archer add some color to his suit with a costume directly inspired by one of his comics.

Hawkeye provided the perfect opportunity for Clint to wear a new costume, especially due to the presence of his new protégé, Kate Bishop. Throughout the Disney+ show, Kate insisted that Clint needed a more recognizable suit, explaining that he had a “branding issue” as the mysterious loner of the Avengers, while most of his fellow heroes had gone on to become pop culture titans following the events of the blip. She even sketched a possible costume idea for him. This turned out to be an Easter egg, referencing Hawkeye’s classic look of a pointed mask with an “H” on top.

In the Hawkeye finale, Clint finally took Kate’s advice and wore a new costume, made by Missy, one of the NYC LARPers who helped Clint and Kate. However, Hawkeye's new costume did not exactly look like original comic design. Instead, it drew its greatest inspiration from Matt Fraction’s and David Aja’s Hawkeye comics from 2015. In these comics, Clint Barton worked with Kate Bishop to protect Clint’s new apartment from a group of tracksuit-wearing gangsters, so it makes sense that Hawkeye’s suit would be similar to this iteration. While his new costume was heavily inspired by this comic book look, it also has several key differences.

Hawkeye's new costume bears many similarities to that of his 2015 comic book counterpart. First, both costumes are much simpler than Hawkeye’s classic purple and blue suit. The costumes share the same color scheme, featuring black pants and a primarily black top with Hawkeye’s purple logo on the chest. In addition, both outfits include a bow and quiver, which allows Hawkeye to easily access his arrows.

However, there are some stark differences between Hawkeye’s television and comic book looks. First, Clint’s costume in Hawkeye is more complex than its inspiration. While Clint wears a black t-shirt in the comic book, Clint’s shirt in Hawkeye looks more like a traditional costume due to being made by a LARPer. Clint’s Hawkeye shirt also has long, purple sleeves as opposed to short sleeves, which is more practical for fighting outdoors in New York in December. Other minor differences include Clint wearing only one glove instead of two and having a less prominent utility belt in Hawkeye. While there are several differences between Clint’s television and comic styles, his new costume in Hawkeye still draws heavily upon its comic book origin and adapts it to the screen in a practical way.
