Marvel's Hawkeye introduces a Steve Rogers musical to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is terrible news for Bucky Barnes' Phase 4 story. Despite several of the Avengers' stories ending in Avengers: Endgame, Hawkeye brings Jeremy Renner's Clint Barton back to the MCU. In the upcoming Disney+ show, Hawkeye deals with the fallout of his past as Ronin in Endgame and seemingly takes a new arrow-shooting hero under his wing. Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop, a newcomer to the MCU, joins the series as Hawkeye's bow-wielding apprentice. Together, the pair will seemingly take on Molotov cocktail-throwing thugs shown in the trailer, as well as Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova, who took up Hawkeye's trail in a post-credit scene in Black Widow.

Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes has had a complicated MCU timeline. In Captain America: The First Avenger, Bucky loses his arm and gets captured by Hydra, eventually being brainwashed and turned into the Winter Soldier. Years later, Chris Evans' Steve Rogers recognizes Bucky in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, even throwing down his shield in an effort to free the Winter Soldier from Hydra's control. Bucky deals with issues of his Winter Soldier past throughout his MCU journey. In Falcon and the Winter Soldier, he even befriends the father of one of his former victims.

The Hawkeye trailer reveals a Steve Rogers Broadway show in the MCU, making Bucky's story even worse. In Hawkeye, Clint Barton seemingly takes his kids to a play called Rogers: The Musical. Though the musical appears briefly in the trailer, the few scenes tell a lot. The play's signage evokes imagery of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton, and another scene shows actors portraying the Avengers while performing an upbeat dance routine. Unfortunately, though the play celebrates Rogers' life, Bucky's story is even more complicated moving forward.

Falcon Winter Soldier Cap Endgame ending worse for Bucky

Bucky has a hard enough time dealing with his past without others constantly shoving it in his face. In Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Bucky suffers from nightmares and goes to therapy over the demons from his past. He also carries a list of names of people who were affected while he was the Winter Soldier. The last thing Bucky needs is a glamorous musical giving a glossy re-telling of the horrors of his past. He also doesn't need a show constantly rubbing his friend's good deeds in his face. As Captain America's best friend, Bucky's story would likely be a part of the Broadway show, and—if the play is as high-profile as Hamilton— it would be advertised everywhere as an ongoing reminder of Bucky's dark past.

The Hawkeye play is also a farcical monument to his friend's death. Cap's story in the MCU is up in the air, with his whereabouts currently unknown. However, the ending of Endgame essentially suggests that an older Captain America was giving away his shield as one of the last significant acts in his life. A glitzy Broadway musical would serve as an annoying reminder of his friend's absence. While some may see the show as a way to honor Rogers, Bucky would likely have a different perspective. It's definitely a show he'll want to miss.
