As to why wasn't addressed, only that these abilities became a disadvantage due to Hill House exploiting them. Now that the horror is over, fans need to know the significance of this aspect of the Crain women.

In many ways, the fact that the house’s malevolence isn’t addressed makes for one of the biggest cliffhangers in the last decade. This is due to everything tied down to Hill House’s evil, whose origin is something that is never made clear.
It’s simply agreed that the house is supposed to be a bad place, but that doesn’t stop the questions over why it is that way and how it came to be. Since there doesn’t seem to be a direct sequel in the works, fans tend to fixate on this question the most.
