The news that Jamie Lee Curtis will play Madame Leota in 2023’s The Haunted Mansion is fantastic for fans of the horror genre. 2022 has been a great year for horror and, judging by the projects that have been announced so far, it looks like 2023 will be no different. 2023 will see the arrival of numerous major horror movies as well as some choice horror-comedy titles, including a Disney+ reboot of The Haunted Mansion.

Released in 2003, The Haunted Mansion was an Eddie Murphy family comedy. The Haunted Mansion saw the comedian play a harried estate agent who got more than bargained for when he brought his family to visit the run-down and thoroughly ghost-ridden eponymous manor. While not as critically or commercially successful as the same year’s other Disneyland ride adaptation, the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, The Haunted Mansion was successful enough to prompt a reboot twenty years after its release.

The upcoming 2023 horror movie will see Tiffany Haddish, LaKeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, and Danny DeVito star in the story of a single mom who hires a tour guide, a psychic, a priest, and a historian to exorcise her new mansion. While this stacked cast was already an impressive lineup, The Haunted Mansion’s comic prospects were improved further with the news that genre icon Jamie Lee Curtis would play a supporting role in the new movie. This will be a chance for the veteran scream queen to mock her history of horror roles while also tapping into her comedic side as the actor takes on the part of Madame Leota.

Jamie Lee Curtis’s Haunted Mansion Role Can Spoof A New Horror Cliche

Curtis was one of the first horror franchise heroines to return to a long-dormant franchise with 2018’s Halloween, but she’s far from the last. Since then, The Craft: Legacy brought back Nancy Downs, Scream 2022 brought back Neve Campbell’s Sidney, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 brought back a recast Sally Hardesty. This means that Jamie Lee Curtis is perfectly positioned to mock this emerging genre cliche with her role in The Haunted Mansion, where the actor takes on the part of a fortune teller who appears in a glass ball.

Jennifer Tilly played Madame Leota in 2003’s The Haunted Mansion, but the horror-comedy under-used the talented star in a thankless minor part. The Haunted Mansion’s 2023 reboot can make up for this by having long-established horror heroine Jamie Lee Curtis warn the movie’s stars to get out of the titular location, a gag that would be a clever meta nod to her history in the horror genre. Curtis’s countless Final Girl roles mean that the Halloween Kills heroine knows all too well how to escape a horror story, meaning The Haunted Mansion could offer a nod to her genre pedigree by having the supporting star Madame Leota warn the movie’s clueless cast what their odds of survival are.
