One of the unique elements of Harvestella is the ability to switch between a wide range of skills, known as jobs, to combat enemies. The protagonist can have three jobs available in a fight at a time and can switch their job selection at a Motus Monolite. The second job the protagonist unlocks is the Mage job, which initially allows the user to cast electric and ice attacks. Players must process through different tiers of varied skills in the Mage job, but some skills are more useful than others.

Once players have defeated the Unicorn in Harvestella while searching for Aria, they'll eventually reach a cutscene where the Unicorn teaches the protagonist the Mage job. From there, every time the player enters combat with the Mage job, they will earn job points for that job. These JPs can be spent on new skills. The player must have four skills unlocked to reveal more abilities, and one of these skills, Electro, is already accessible.

Best Mage Skills To Get Early in Harvestella

Mage Uniform in Harvestella

Guided by the structure of the skill tree, the first important skill to buy is Freezing at 200 JP, which unlocks the second special ability of long-ranged ice attacks. This is followed by Shorten Job Change Cooldown, allowing the player to switch from the slowly charging Mage job to the close combat Fighter job in Harvestella and back faster. This costs 300 JP and is a prerequisite for Electro II, a boost to the Electro ability costing 600 JP.

Upon unlocking Tier 2, Bolt Impulse becomes an invaluable asset to the game. It deals both crushing and lightning damage while pushing enemies back. From there, players should invest in Increase Ice Damage for 1,000 JP, strengthening their ice attacks. Finally, considering this is the job of magic, players will want to work towards Reduce Magic Damage, which costs 1,500 JP and requires Freezing II to unlock at 1,200 JP. At this point, players should have all the prerequisite abilities to unlock Bolt Impulse II for 1,800 JP.

The reason the Bolt Impulse skills are so important is due to the slow nature of Mage attacks, which spell destruction in fast-paced boss battles like Hydolanzer. Most Mage attacks take a few moments to charge, freezing the protagonist in place before firing a bolt of energy. This allows enemies to swarm in on them and take advantage. The wide range of attack styles makes the Mage job a valuable resource, especially in the game's early chapters, but players need to be careful how they utilize it. These early skills improve the strength of attacks, making the long charging times worth it. Bolt Impulse's knockback effect, however, will make it safer for players to get closer to enemies.

As players continue farming and fighting, they'll unlock new jobs like the Sky Lancer job in Harvestella that add new and exciting layers to combat. Some of these jobs may make the Mage job irrelevant to certain play styles. However, the Mage job's diversity, power, and role in Harvestella make it an important resource in the early game and the key to winning specific battles.
