During his latest concert in New York City, Harry Styles breaks his silence surrounding the now-infamous "Spitgate" controversy involving him and his Don't Worry Darling co-star Chris Pine. Over the past several weeks, the conversation surrounding director Olivia Wilde's second film has shifted from being about the movie itself to speculating about the many, many controversies that have swelled up around it. From rumors of Wilde and leading lady Florence Pugh having a falling out to Shia LaBeouf disputing Wilde's public statements about his exit from the film, Don't Worry Darling is perhaps the most infamous movie of the fall.Most recently, a video from Don't Worry Darling's premiere at the Venice International Film Festival has gone viral and kicked off a new bit of drama for the movie. Said video appeared to depict Styles spitting on Pine while taking his seat for the movie. The internet has been alight with memes and theories ever since. Pine's representatives later released a statement calling the entire situation "a complete fabrication." Nevertheless, it's another chapter in the ever-evolving Don't Worry Darling saga.Up until now, Styles has remained silent on the matter of Spitgate. On Wednesday, Styles returned to his multi-week residency at NYC's Madison Square Garden and, in the middle of his concert, alluded to the controversy. In videos captured by concert attendees maria and Sarah TODAY, the singer said, in a joking manner, "I just popped very quickly to Venice to spit on Chris Pine." You can see the videos below:
Based on Styles' lighthearted approach, it does sound like the alleged spitting never happened. There may be some who are quick to say that Styles is merely acting smug about the incident, but it seems instead that he's just amused by how quickly things spiraled out of hand. The Don't Worry Darling premiere video is rather questionable, to be sure, yet it's hard to genuinely tell what happened within it. Only Pine and Styles know what actually conspired, and if there is any truth to the rumors, it's unlikely either of them will say anything at this moment in time.
Still, as Don't Worry Darling gets closer to its release, expect the topic to come up frequently. Though Pugh has opted out of promoting the film, there's a good chance both Styles and Pine will give a few more interviews in the lead-up to the September 23 debut. That would give both actors the opportunity to comment on the matter further. When it comes to the Don't Worry Darling drama, it's safe to say observers already have their opinions about what happened, and a teasing comment made at a concert won't do much to sway them.
