While Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings might be very different stories in some ways, they actually have a lot in common. They are both extremely popular fantasy stories, and they follow many of the same tropes of the genre.

It’s clear that Harry Potter was inspired at least in part by The Lord of the Rings, so looking at how these two stories are similar is always thought-provoking. We’ve put together a list of the main characters from The Lord of the Rings and imagined what jobs they’d have if they lived in the wizarding world.

Boromir: Quidditch Player

Boromir at the council of Elrond

While in the books and films Boromir, like many of the other members of the Fellowship, Boromir is both a warrior and royalty to some extent, he is the member of the Fellowship who is most jock-like.

At least when he is happy and not worried about things like trying to get the Ring, he enjoys messing around and seems like he would be good at a sport.

Aragorn: Head Auror

As a leader in many ways and eventual King, Aragorn has the skills it would take to be the head of a department. He’s someone who dedicates most of his life to fighting against evil forces, so it would make sense that he would do the same thing in the wizarding world.

He would definitely be invested in doing everything he could to stop evil witches and wizards.

Arwen: Healer

Liv Tyler as Arwen in Fellowship of the Ring

While Arwen in the books doesn’t seem to have any particular career of skills that are discussed, in the movies she does seem to have the abilities of both a warrior and a healer. She would likely have learned a lot about healing and taking care of others while being Elrond’s daughter.

Plus, she also has the disposition to be compassionate and care for others while also being strong enough to handle the tough decisions a healer has to make.

Legolas: Curse Breaker

Orlando Bloom as Legolas Greenleaf Archer Bow And Arrow The Lord of the Rings

Legolas is somewhat of a difficult character to assign a job to in the wizarding world. In the books, he’s the son of King Thranduil and clearly a skilled warrior.

He does seem to have a desire for adventure given that he spends his time after the War of the Ring adventuring with Gimli. So, it makes sense that the two of them would do something both intriguing and action-packed.

Merry and Pippin: Joke Shop Owner

This is a fairly easy comparison to make seeing as how both Fred and George and Merry and Pippin are the jokester duo of their respective stories.

While Fred and George are brothers, Merry and Pippin are cousins. They would love being able to do something that allows them to get up to pranking and having a fun time, so running a joke shop would be ideal for them.

Galadriel: Head of the Department of Mysteries

Galadriel influenced by the Ring in The Lord of the Rings

There are two main jobs that Galadriel could have in the Harry Potter universe. The first would be a Divination professor seeing as she has great insight into the world and nearly prophetic powers.

However, she’s also a leader of her people, so it makes sense that she would have both a powerful and mysterious position such as Head of the Department of Mysteries.

Eowyn: Auror

Eowyn at the Battle of Pelennor Fields in Return of the King

While Eowyn was raised to be a lady of Rohan and to fulfill traditional gender roles of homemaking and caretaking, she also trained as a warrior like many of the women in her country. Going to battle and fighting for the values and people she loved was what she always wanted to do.

So, in a world where gender roles didn’t matter as much, it makes sense that Eowyn would work to fight against evil and to protect other people as an Auror.

Gandalf: Headmaster of Hogwarts

Dumbledore and Gandalf

Gandalf is the leader of the Fellowship in many ways as he’s the wisest and oldest and has a mission to help defeat Sauron.

So, in many ways, he would function like Dumbledore would as both a mentor and a leader in the fight against evil. And, just like Dumbledore, he’d have so much on his plate that he wouldn’t always be that dedicated to the school.

Sam: Herbologist

Sam Gamgee in Lord of the Rings

In The Lord of the Rings, Sam is a simple gardener who gets swept up into a quest he never asked for, but his loyalty to Frodo allows him to see things through.

He would make an amazing Herbalist as he would love to care for plants and or learn all about their magical properties. This is a pretty direct correlation, and it’s easy to imagine him working as a Herbology professor or something along those lines.

Frodo: Author

Lord of the Rings Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins in Fellowship of the Ring The Shire

While this might not seem like the most exciting or magical of careers, just like in Middle-Earth or even our own world, writing is an important career in the wizarding one.

Frodo would be someone very much like Harry in many ways, except Frodo decides to live a quiet life of healing after the ordeal of defeating a dark lord. And, he finishes both his and Bilbo’s stories before leaving Middle-Earth.
