While Gryffindor might command the lion’s share of attention in the Harry Potter universe, it’s also true that there are many notable members of Ravenclaw. They might lack their fellow house’s penchant for bravery and honor, but they more than make up for it with their keen intelligence and their emphasis on creativity.
There are, in fact, several members of Ravenclaw who, in one way or another, shape the history of the Harry Potter universe, and it is thus worth taking a look at them through the lens provided by the Enneagram Institute.
The Reformer - Rowena Ravenclaw
Rowena is, in many ways, the most important of the members of Ravenclaw, given that she is one of the founders of Hogwarts itself. As a result, she had to be a very driven and assertive sort of personality, the type of individual who wasn’t simply content with the status quo. She was thus very much in the mold of a Reformer, the Enneagram type most committed to their own vision and blessed with the forcefulness to see it brought to fruition.
The Helper - Luna Lovegood
Luna Lovegood is one of the most likable members of Ravenclaw, and she plays a key role in the life and adventures of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. While she can be a bit strange and even otherworldly at times, she nevertheless has a good soul, and she seems to be genuinely invested in helping others. For all of these reasons, she shows signs of being a Helper, and her generosity when it comes to others is one of her most endearing and important qualities as a person.
The Achiever - Gilderoy Lockhart
Gilderoy Lockhart is one of the low-key villains in Harry Potter. Though at first he seems to be something of a golden boy, it’s revealed that he is nothing more than a charlatan, capable of manipulating memories so that he comes out looking like a hero. It’s easy to see how he is an Achiever, the personality type that is very image-conscious. In fact, it is fairly clear that someone like Lockhart cares about nothing but their image, to the detriment of other elements of their personality.
The Individualist - Moaning Myrtle
Moaning Myrtle is, of course, one of the notable ghosts at Hogwarts, and her story is an especially tragic one (killed as she is by the basilisk). Because she is often very self-absorbed and dramatic in almost all aspects of her personality–most notably with her signature moaning and weeping–she is very much an Individualist.
What’s more, she is also a very temperamental person, prone to changing her mood at the drop of a hat, as various characters ultimately find out to their chagrin.
The Investigator - Sybill Trelawney
Sybil Trelawney is one of the best professors at Hogwarts, even if she does at times seem to live in her own world. While it’s easy for some–including Hermione–might look down on her for what they view as her fake prophecies, the truth is that she is actually, when it comes down to it, quite observant and even wise. She also shows many of the other signs of the Investigator, including a tendency to be secretive and isolated from the rest of the Hogwarts staff and students.
The Loyalist - Professor Flitwick
There are few professors at Hogwarts more skilled than Professor Flitwick, who is a very skilled wizard. He also shows that is a very engaging and responsible professor, both during his time as teacher and during the defense of Hogwarts against the forces of Voldemort. Given that he is both a Loyalist and a member of Ravenclaw, it’s not surprising that he would show these traits, or that so many students and faculty would rely on him as a very perceptive voice of wisdom.
The Enthusiast - Xenophilius Lovegood
In some ways, Xenophilius Lovegood is one of the more morally ambiguous characters in the Harry Potter universe, since he does betray Harry and the others. However, he is still a good man for all of that. He is also very much an Enthusiast.
Like many others who are in the mold of that particular personality, he can at times be a bit scattered, which helps to explain why so few people tend to take him seriously, even if he does come to be an important source of news for the rest of the wizarding world.
The Challenger - Professor Quirrell
There are many reasons why Professor Quirrell is one of the more sinister villains in the Harry Potter universe. Chiefly, he is able to disguise his truly villainous nature behind a seemingly cowardly exterior. In reality, though, he is the type of forceful personality known as the Challenger. As he shows in his fatal encounter with Harry in the first movie and book, he is capable of being confrontational and willing with others, especially when he thinks that they aren’t nearly as powerful as he is.
The Peacemaker - Ollivander
Ollivander the wand-maker is also another of the morally gray characters, especially since he remains far more interested in what the users of a given wand can do than whether they are ethical or not. More sinisterly, perhaps, he also shows many of the traits of the Peacemaker. As he showed while he was imprisoned by Voldemort, he was very willing to do whatever it took to save himself from further pain, including giving the Dark Lord some valuable information about wands.
The Helper - Cho Chang
Though she is something of a side character, Cho Chang still comes to play an important role in many of the key events in Harry Potter. Time and again, she shows that she is truly a good person, someone who cares about the welfare of others, not just Harry, but other members of Dumbledore’s Army. As a result, it’s easy to see why she should be viewed as a Helper. Her kindness and generosity of spirit help to explain why she still remains one of the most likable characters to have ever appeared in the series.
