While J.K. Rowling has been generous in the years post Potter publication in revealing extra information about her world and characters, she hasn't offered up as many middle names as fans might like to see. While the calendar is now filled with the birthdays of Harry Potter characters, only a handful of characters have middle names (or at least middle names we know of).

Those that do have names are full of meaning and family connections, though Dumbledore just seems to have names for fun. Below are ten of the middle names that have been revealed in the world of Harry Potter.

Harry James Potter

Harry James Potter, the Chosen One, the Boy Who Lived takes his middle name from his late father, James Potter. No doubt Lily and James named their son for his father without considering that he might end up named "after" James once the pair were murdered by Voldemort.

Harry gives his eldest child his father's name as well. James Sirius Potter is born to Harry and Ginny in the years following the Second Wizarding War and, like his father and grandfather, is sorted into Gryffindor house.

Hermione Jean Granger

It's not quite clear where Hermione's middle name of "Jean" comes from, though it was likely chosen to balance the unusual nature of her first name.

J.K. Rowling did confirm that Hermione's parents chose "a nice, unusual" first name because they wanted to establish how educated and intelligent they were. Jean seems to make more sense as a name chosen by a pair of muggle doctors for their only child, but reasoning behind it has never been confirmed.

Ron Bilius Weasley

Ron is probably lucky his first name isn't Bilius. Being the sixth of six brothers it was always possible Arthur and Molly could have run out of more normal names by then.

Ron's middle name likely comes from an Uncle Bilius who was mentioned in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban as having died after seeing a grim. Luckily Ron has his uncle's name but not his luck with grims or omens.

Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore

Albus Dumbledore from Harry Potter

Albus, like Harry James Potter, got the first of his middle names from his own father, Percival Dumbledore. As the eldest son in the family this makes sense. Where Wulfric and Brian come from isn't known.

Wulfric, oddly enough, means "wolf-power" despite Albus not being a werewolf. Brian, when traced back to Celtic, means hill. Dumbeldore itself means bee. So, there's a lot of animal references in Dumbledore's full name.

Draco Lucius Malfoy

Draco, again like Harry and Dumbledore, takes his middle name from his father, Lucius. Unlike Harry, however, when Draco has a son of his own, he does not pass on his own father's name in any way.

While Harry's eldest son is named James, Draco's son is named Scorpius. Scorpius doesn't even take his grandfather's name as a middle name. Rather, Scorpius is known as Scorpius Hyperion Malfoy. Obviously, Draco's feelings about his father grew very complicated later in his life.

Ginny Molly Weasley

Like her husband, Harry, Ginny takes her middle name from one of her parents. As the only girl of the seven Weasley siblings it makes sense for her to take her mother's name as part of her own. As the only girl, she is also, by default, the eldest girl in the family.

Her eldest brother, Bill, took his father's name, Arthur, as his middle name. So, the Weasley's obviously had a bit of a tradition in passing on parental names to their children, though Ginny doesn't name any of her children after the Weasley side of the family.

Remus John Lupin

Lupin's middle name was, perhaps, the second most investigated name in the series. When Lupin shows up on the train in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Hermione reads his name off his suitcase. R.J. Lupin.

Theories exploded as some fans theorized that, perhaps, the J stood for James, and James was somehow not as dead as had always been assumed. Of course, that was not the case, and J.K. Rowling eventually revealed that the J stood for nothing more than John.

Tom Marvolo Riddle

The birth name of Lord Voldemort had to contain particular letters so that in Chamber of Secrets it would be rearranged to spell out, "I am Lord Voldemort".

However, in the series, the name Marvolo is explained when it is revealed that Voldemort's maternal grandfather's name was Marvolo. While the Dark Lord took his first name from his muggle father, he took his middle name from his magical family, descendants of Salazar Slytherin.

Regulus Arcturus Black

Younger brother of Sirius Black (who's middle name is never revealed) Regulus had the most investigated middle name in the entire Harry Potter series.

With the initials R.A.B found on the note inside Slytherin's locket the fandom began to scour the universe for what possible character might have called these initials his own. As is now common knowledge, R.A.B. was Sirius's younger brother, and Slytherin house member, Regulus.

Albus Severus Potter

Harry Potter's youngest son, and middle child, Albus Severus, has, perhaps, the most controversial middle name in the entire Harry Potter series. Snape is seen as a hero by some and as a bully by others.

Either way, Severus is quite the mouthful to put on a kid. It's no wonder Albus Severus makes friends with Scorpius Hyperion, since Scorpius is the only person who has no right to make fund of Albus's name.
