On the Wizarding World website, J.K Rowling goes into detail about thirty eight different woods used in wand creation, specifically by British wand maker Garrick Ollivander. While most Harry Potter fans can list the specifics of Harry's wand (holly, 11 inches, phoenix tail feather core) most other wands used in the series are less familiar to casual readers/viewers.

However, some wand woods, like vine, also play important roles in the stories and are owned by key (and much beloved) characters. Below we explore some of the lesser known details that surround vine wood in the Harry Potter universe.

Hermione Granger

Vine wood is of particular interest in the Harry Potter fandom because it is the wood from which Hermione Granger's wand is made. Hermione's wand is made of vine wood, is 10 and 3/4 inches, and possesses a core of dragon heartstring. She purchases her wand from Ollivander's shop the summer before beginning her education at Hogwarts as a first year wizard. Of the golden trio, she is the only one who's wand survives the entire series unharmed, and is still with her after Voldemort's downfall in The Deathly Hallows.

Not a Tree

Vine is of particular interest as a wand wood because it's not necessarily a wood. Usually, vine is defined as a grape vine, or, more generally, as any plant with a growth pattern of trailing or climbing stems. Yet, the woody nature of a vine stem makes it possible to create wands from the plant, and, Ollivander at least, continues to use the vine to create wands for sale in his Diagon Alley storefront.

Druids

The history of vine wood goes back to the druids. Druids considered anything with a woody stem to be a tree. This means that, even though vines are not actually trees, they continue to be used in the creation of wands into the present day. Vine has always been respected for the special nature they seem to imbue to the wands they are made a part of. Vine has remained a popular wand wood, even if it is a rare witch or wizard who will claim one.

Purpose

Vine wands may be one of the lesser common types seen in the hands of witches and wizards, but they are meant for a greater purpose when they match with the right owner.

As J.K. Rowling revealed on the Wizarding World online, vine wand "owners are nearly always those witches or wizards who seek a greater purpose, who have a vision beyond the ordinary and who frequently astound those who think they know them best". This certainly describes one, Hermione Granger, to a T.

Depth

Vine wands will only match with witches or wizards who seem to possess personalities with hidden depths. Again, Hermione Granger seems like a great example of the type of witch that a vine wand would be attracted to. Garrick Ollivander himself has described vine wood as being one of the most sensitive woods when it comes to instantly detecting a prospective match who comes into his shop. It's very possible Hermione's wand chose her almost immediately when she arrived in Diagon Alley as an eleven year old.

Ownership

J.K. Rowling wrote on Wizarding World online that some claim that vine wands "can emit magical effects upon the mere entrance into their room of a suitable owner." Where Harry's holly wand emitted gold and red sparks when he picked it up at Ollivander's, Hermione's wand may have indicated its preference for its owner before ever being taken from its box. Ollivander claims this has happened twice in his store with a vine wand.

Persistence

Again, vine seems to be the absolute perfect wand wood for one "brightest witch of her age," Hermione Granger. Vine wand wood is often associated with persistence and renewal. No one is more persistent than Hermione. She sticks with Harry and Ron, sticks with her studies, and always fights for what she believes is right (like the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare).  Hermione grows into herself as she goes through her years at Hogwarts, her vine wand at her side throughout every experience.

Energy

While Hermione may seem the most down to earth of the golden trio, she certainly seems to have limitless energy. How else could she attend so many classes in her third year in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Vine wands are known to be attracted to people who (like Hermione) have restless spirits and seemingly limitless energy.

As J.K. Rowling notes, "They are also prone to burn the candle at both ends." Hermione certainly did so with her extra classes and her time turner. And, even without a time turner, she was always working to improve her education and the world around her.

Achievement

In the play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, it is revealed that Hermione Granger grows up to eventually take over the post of Minister of Magic. Again, as noted on the Wizarding World website, "Vine people should learn to pace themselves and their achievements will know no bounds." Hermione's achievements do, of course, know no bounds. However, it is also clear that Hermione, at many points, needed to learn to pace herself, and take a break and a nap, to be at her best and most successful, especially in the classroom.

Celtic Calendar

The Celtic tree calendar is based on theoretical interpretations of the Ogham alphabet, or what is called the Celtic Tree Alphabet. J.K. Rowling took a lot of inspiration from the calendar. In this tradition, birthdays line up with corresponding trees. Hermione Granger's vine wand does coincide with her September birthday on the Celtic Wand Wood Calendar, just as Harry's holly wand also coincides with his July birthday.
