Most of what Harry Potter fans know about wandlore comes from Ollivander himself. While other cores are used in wand making, the three most common in Britain are: phoenix tail feather, unicorn hair, and dragon heartstring. Of the golden trio, Harry, Ron, and Hermione each hold one of the cores in their own wands.

Hermione is the one who's wand contains dragon heartstring. While Hermione's wand core is well known, there are a few other characters who's wands also contain dragon heartstring who may not be as obvious. Below we explore a few traits of that particular wand core, and those witches and wizards who possess it.

The Most Power

Dragon heartstring cores are known for producing the most powerful magic, and producing the most showy spells of any wand type. While phoenix tail feather wands take some time to get to know their owners, dragon heartstring tends to learn very quickly and produce the intended magic much sooner than wands that contain other core types.

There's a reason that Hermione, who masters magic at a very fast pace, is well suited to a dragon heartstring core within her vine wood wand.

Prone to Accidents

No core is perfect, no matter what it's made out of. Wands that contain dragon heartstring are known for being a bit more prone to accidents than wands with other core types.

While the magic produced certainly depends a great deal on the witch or wizard performing the magic, dragon heartstring can be dangerous for wizards and witches who may learn at a slower pace and are themselves prone to mistakes. It can be a dangerous combination on occasion.

The Dark Arts

While no wand or wand core is inherently bad or evil, dragon heartstring is the core most easily turned to performing the dark arts. This, in part, comes from the fact that the wand core is a fast learner.

If its owner is practicing illegal magic the wand is still likely to learn those spells at a faster pace than a wand of another type. While Voldemort has phoenix tail feather at the heart of his wand, quite a few of his followers have dragon heartstring cores in their own wands.

Allegiance

Wands with dragon heartstring cores bond with their owners, but hold no loyalty to an owner who has been defeated. Dragon heartstring will change its allegiance easily if it is won through defeat of its previous owner.

It will bond and perform well to whoever currently holds its allegiance, but will not struggle to perform magic for a new owner who has obtained it through a duel or fight of one kind or another.

Speed

Dues to its quick learning style and the simplicity with which a dragon heartstring wand changes its allegiance to a new owner, it should be no surprise that a wand containing dragon heartstring will perform, almost immediately, for its master.

It doesn't need time to learn about the witch or wizard who holds it, but does as is requested straight away. That, as mentioned above, also leads to accidents. It will perform the magic requested of it at once, whether or not that's the spell its owner really meant to cast.

Peter Pettigrew

Peter Pettigrew, betrayer of James and Lily Potter and fourth member of the Marauders, had a wand with dragon heartstring at its core. This, undoubtedly led to many of the accidents Peter was prone to in school. He was not as smart as his fellow Marauders and needed quite a bit of assistance to become an animagus.

While dragon heartstring probably didn't help Peter as a wizard, it certainly fit well with his personality. Peter always wanted to seem more powerful than he really was.

Bellatrix Lestrange

Dragon heartstring wands are the easiest to turn to the dark side, thus it makes a lot of sense that Voldemort's top lieutenant, Bellatrix Lestrange, had a dragon heartstring core in her wand.

Not only was dragon heartstring helpful to Bellatrix in the havoc she caused, but it also allowed her to put on a show, torturing, in very flashy ways, many of her victims before finally doing away with them.

Lucius Malfoy

Lucius Malfoy, like his sister-in-law Bellatrix, had a dragon heartstring core in his wand. While Lucius struggled with his work as a Death Eater, and even had his wand taken and used by Voldemort, his wand core was certainly not the issue.

The quick learning style of dragon heartstring wands certainly helped him to think on his feet and stay clear of prison between wars. The flamboyant nature of dragon heartstring magic certainly matched with Lucius' personal style.

Viktor Krum

Like his love interest Hermione, Viktor Krum also has a dragon heartstring wand at the core of his wand. Krum, like Hermione, proves that, while dragon heartstring wands can be turned to the dark side, not every wizard with a dragon core is a dark wizard.

Krum also highlights the flamboyant magic a dragon heartstring wand can produce, as he tried to transfigure himself into a shark during the second task of the Triwizard Tournament.

Garrick Ollivander

It should also be noted that, the expert in wandlore himself, wand maker Garrick Ollivander, had a wand with dragon heartstring at its core. The power of dragon heartstring probably helped Ollivander in his trade and creation of other wands.

While many consider phoenix tail feather to be the best core (as it was the core of both Harry and Voldemort's wands) it's certainly important to note that the man who knew the most about wands and their capabilities was the owner of a dragon heartstring wand himself.
