In the Wizarding World, Harry Potter is one of the most well-known wizards of all time — and that was the case even before he defeated Lord Voldemort during Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. But despite his achievements, Harry’s a fairly mediocre wizard, who’s been through a lot but has gotten by thanks to the combination of chance and help from his loved ones.

Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender is similarly well known in his universe, but that’s because he’s the Avatar. In terms of raw power, Aang probably has a bit more going for him than Harry — but he’s also been saved by friends and luck on multiple occasions. So, in a fight between Harry and Aang, who would win?

Harry: He Has Magic

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Although Harry and Aang have powers beyond what most humans could imagine, Aang is limited to using the four elements in battle. Harry, on the other hand, has all the magic in the world at his disposal (so long as he knows the spell for what he’s trying to do).

For that reason, Harry has a lot more options if pitted in battle against the Avatar, and could get more creative about how to attack or defend himself. Likewise, there’s no element in the world that could stop an Avada Kedavra curse that lands where it’s supposed to. (Good thing Harry would never resort to using one of the Unforgivable Curses!)

Aang: He Has The Elements

Even if Harry has more flexibility when it comes to using his powers, Aang still has all four elements on his side — and there’s no denying that a huge wave or wall of fire is probably more powerful than most curses and hexes from the Harry Potter universe.

Even with a wide range of magic at his disposal, there’s only so much Harry can do to combat the elements. And after seeing Aang master all four of them, it’s hard to imagine Harry could go up against that level of power.

Harry: Hogwarts Education

Having flexible magic isn’t the only advantage Harry has over Aang; he also has a six-year Hogwarts education, plus plenty of practical experience during and after that schooling.

Aang has had training too, but it’s mostly been short — after all, the whole series sees him rushing to control the elements and defeat Fire Lord Ozai. Rushing means his level of expertise may not be possible to par with Harry’s.

Aang: Wisdom Of The Past Avatars

Aang may not have the same years-long education as Harry when it comes to tapping into his powers, but he does have the wisdom of the past Avatars on his side — and there’s no doubt that Kyoshi and Roku are powerful allies to have, even if they’re just sharing their knowledge.

If the past Avatars were able to help Aang overcome Fire Lord Ozai, surely they could help him beat a boy wizard.

Harry: The Order Of The Phoenix & Dumbledore’s Army

There’s no denying that Harry’s gotten as far as he has because of his friends, and that includes the members of the Order of the Phoenix and Dumbledore’s Army. Assuming Harry wouldn’t have to fight Aang alone, he’d have some of the most powerful witches and wizards in the Wizarding World backing him up.

Although Aang also has plenty of allies, the majority of them aren’t benders. In terms of magic, his team would be outnumbered.

Aang: Team Avatar

Even if Team Avatar is smaller than the Order of the Phoenix, there’s still something to be said about the amount of raw elemental power among the group. If Harry would have trouble fending off Aang’s water, fire, air and earth, there’s a good chance his comrades would have trouble contending with the likes of Katara, Toph and Zuko.

And while Harry may have Hermione’s wits on his side, fans would be remiss to ignore Sokka’s strategic value in battle.

Harry: His Broomstick

Flying can be a useful skill to have in a fight, and Harry’s talent on the Quidditch field would serve in well in that regard. Being able to swoop in on a broomstick could give him an advantage against Aang — even with Appa around.

After all, Harry’s broomstick is easy to steer and agile, meaning he could maneuver it to do just about anything he wants.

Aang: Flying Bison

Aang may not have a broomstick, but that doesn’t mean he can’t fly. If Harry uses a broomstick in a fight, Aang can use Appa — but there are a few disadvantages there.

For one, it’s unlikely Appa would be able to move as quickly and smoothly as a broomstick. He’s also a living creature, and thus a bit less easy to control. But there is one benefit of having a Flying Bison: one whip of his tail would send Harry hurtling in another direction, broomstick or no.

Harry: Resilience

By the time fans get to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, there’s no denying that Harry has been through it. He’s been forced to deal with far more than most witches and wizards his age, and he continues to push forward in spite of it all.

One of Harry’s greatest strengths is his resilience, and that’s something he could use to his advantage yet again during a fight with Aang.

Aang: Positive Attitude

Like Harry, Aang’s also been through a lot at a young age — but it isn’t just resilience that’s gotten him through those obstacles. Aang has an overwhelmingly positive attitude about almost everything, and it helps him dive headfirst into danger without much thought.

Aang’s positivity works in his favor throughout The Last Airbender, and it’s likely it would help him through this fight as well. Accepting that you can win is half the battle, isn’t it?

The Winner: Aang

Avatar The Last Airbender Aang Powers

It’s hard to say who would win in a fight between Harry and Aang, but the odds seem to favor the Avatar. The spells Harry’s learned at Hogwarts likely wouldn’t help him fend off Aang’s bending — or the rest of Team Avatar for that matter.

There’s also the possibility that Aang could enter the Avatar state during the fight. If that were to happen, Harry just wouldn’t stand a chance — even with the rest of the Wizarding World behind him.
