Everyone in the Harry Potter franchise is terrified to say Voldemort's name, and here's the real reason why it shouldn't be spoken. The now-iconic villain from J.K. Rowling's book - and eventual movie - franchise, Voldemort's presence grew with each installment. He did not make his true debut until Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but the power he possessed was still enough to strike fear into many in the Wizarding World.

The paranoia over Voldermort's power eventually grew to the point where it was not acceptable to say his name. As a result, it led to the creation of several shorthands for him instead. People often referred to him as the Dark Lord, "You-Know-Who," or even "He Who Must Not Be Named." Throughout the entirety of the movies and most of the novels, though, there is no actual explanation given for why Voldemort's name shouldn't be said. It is initially just born out of a sense of fear. But, a deleted scene from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 confirms the real reason why it eventually is bad to say his name.

In the books, Deathly Hallows introduced that a Taboo curse was placed on Voldemort's name. The curse made it possible for anyone who said his name to instantly be located by the Death Eaters, giving them the ability to find whoever said it. The Taboo was put into place during this time as it was believed that only members of the Order of the Phoenix were brave enough to say Voldemort's name. As explored in a new video from Screen Rant, this was going to be explained in Deathly Hallows Part 1, but it was left on the cutting room floor.

This Taboo and deleted scene help explain one aspect of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 that some viewers may have had questions with. In the movie, Harry, Hermoine, and Ron were being protected by a spell to as they traveled but were still captured by Snatchers. This is because the Taboo can break regular defensive spells and the trio had previously used Voldemort's name in conversation. The deleted scene from the movie could've pieced this together, as Ron told Harry and Hermoine that he overheard some people talking about it before.

While this scene was cut from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 due to time, it could've been a useful piece of information for casual audiences. Book readers, on the other hand, knew exactly what was happening. Either way, this is the real reason why Voldemort's name shouldn't be spoken in the last two films, as it immediately allows Death Eaters to track whoever spoke it. There is real weight to this decision then, giving those who learn about these attacks another reason to fear Voldemort's name. Before this, not referring to Voldemort by name was mainly superstitious, but the Harry Potter franchise eventually changed that with the Taboo.
