Here are the upcoming Harry Potter movies and TV shows fans of the franchise should look out for. Ever since franchise author, J. K. Rowling rolled out seven unforgettable books that harkened eight blockbuster films, the scope and potential of the Harry Potter franchise have widened exponentially. This has been made especially possible via entries such as the still-developing Fantastic Beasts trilogy, the stage adaptation of The Cursed Child, and the upcoming open-world, immersive RPG game, Hogwarts Legacy.

It is interesting how J.K. Rowling has chosen to continue expanding the magical world she birthed 24 years ago, as Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the first installment of the book series, was published in 1997. While Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them was originally a guidebook meant as a complementary element to the canonical story, it was adapted as a prequel to the Harry Potter films, grossing $814 million worldwide. The success of the film transformed the Fantastic Beasts franchise into the trilogy, although there has been much controversy surrounding Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, scheduled to release in April 2022.

Due to the immense lore and in-world detailing in the realm of Harry Potter, it was artistically impossible for the canon movies to bring every critical aspect to life. Key events were expunged from Harry Potter films, such as Hermione’s valiant efforts to liberate house-elves, and the deeper backstory behind each of the Horcruxes was never properly explained. Hence, the release of these upcoming Harry Potter movies and films can potentially help fill in these gaps and add seminal layers to an already rich world that brims with endless possibilities.

Harry Potter: Tournament Of Houses

Premiering on TBS and Cartoon Network on 28 November 2021, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses is a four-part quiz show celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Harry Potter film series. This game show is designed to test contestants’ knowledge and skills when it comes to the finer details of the Wizarding World, wherein the participants are divided into the four major Hogwarts houses into groups of three. Hosted by Helen Mirren, the show will also include special guests, along with self-confessed Harry Potter fans and members of the original cast, such as Shirley Henderson, Tom Felton, Pete Davidson, and Jay Leno.

Apart from being an exciting limited event for long-time fans who will be able to test their own knowledge about the Wizarding World, Tournament of Houses will also be offering a $1000 shopping spree to the winning team at the Harry Potter New York Store. Moreover, the winners will also be winning exclusive tickets to the New York Lyric Theatre production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, along with advanced screenings for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. As the recently released trailer of the show seems exciting, it will be interesting to witness how this game show will potentially garner even more fan hype out of an already massively engaged audience.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

The third, and possibly final installment in the Fantastic Beasts series, The Secrets of Dumbledore is set to tentative release on 15 April 2022, in the United States and 8 April 2022 in the United Kingdom. Directed by David Yates and based on a screenplay by Steve Kloves and Rowling herself, The Secrets of Dumbledore is set several years after the events of The Crimes of Grindelwald, following up on Dumbledore (Jude Law) tasking Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and his allies with a mission that situates them right at the heart of dark wizard, Gellert Grindelwald’s (Mads Mikkelsen) army. Most importantly, this film will also be delving deeper into the ancestry of Credence Barebone, who is revealed to be Aurelius Dumbledore, Dumbledore’s long-lost brother at the end of the second installment. Also, it is only a matter of time before viewers find out if the many temporal inconsistencies created by the franchise will be finally resolved.

HBO Max's Live-Action Harry Potter Series Is In "Early Development"

Per The Hollywood Reporter, a Harry Potter live-action TV series is in early development, intended to be released on HBO Max, according to sources that the WarnerMedia-backed streamer has indulged in conversations exploring potential ideas about the series. While it is still too early to speculate the exact nature of this live-action adaptation, as no writers or talent are currently attached to the same, it is an exciting premise for those who wish to foray back into the magic and wonder of the franchise. It is also important to note that, as a certain amount of sentiment is attached to the portrayal of the canonical events in the original movies, a successful adaptation in live-action form would merit an incredible amount of time, deft execution, and originality.

Will Harry Potter & The Cursed Child Movie Happen?

Jack Thorne’s two-part play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child premiered on 30 July 2016, at Palace Theatre, London. The Cursed Child is set nineteen years after the events of The Deathly Hallows and follows Harry, who is now Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at The Ministry of Magic. Whether The Cursed Child will actually be adapted into a movie has not been confirmed either by Warner Bros. or Rowling herself, there is no sure-shot way to know if the movie will be released, if ever. However, this adaptation is not entirely out of the question, as director Chris Columbus, director of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone, wishes to bring back the original trio (Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint) for this “fantasy” project. If this were to materialize, it would be yet another reason for those wishing for another installment in the Harry Potter franchise to rejoice, given the volume of content scheduled to be released.
