There are some pretty horrible characters in the Harry Potter universe, apart from Lord Voldemort, who wants to rid the world of Muggle-borns while inflicting plenty of pain and suffering along the way. There's Bellatrix Lestrange, a Death Eater bad to the bone. And there's Severus Snape, somebody who is actually meant to be protecting Harry but doesn't mind bullying the Boy Who Lived in the process.

Arguably worse than the lot, though, is Dolores Umbridge. She first appears in The Order of the Phoenix and then returns for The Deathly Hallows: Part 1. While the movies did a brilliant job of bringing the loathsome character to the big screen, not every bit of information about Umbridge from the books made it into the films.

She Sent The Dementors

At the beginning of the Order of the Phoenix, Harry and Dudley Dursley come under attack from the Dementors of Azkaban prison. The creatures are a long way from home and go after the Boy Who Lived and his relative, prompting Harry to use a Patronus Charm. He's then put on trial and luckily gets off, with people in the court voting in his favor.

What isn't explained, though, is that it was Umbridge who sent them. She did this so that Harry would be expelled, but her grand plan fails. It would have been good for movie fans to know this but, in the end, Warner Bros just couldn't cram it in.

She Slapped Harry, Fred And George With A Quidditch Ban

Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy in Quidditch training

When the chips are down, Harry can usually rely on Quidditch to cheer him up. Unfortunately for him, though, Umbridge hands him, Fred and George Weasley a ban from the sport after a fight breaks out following Gryffindor's triumph over Slytherin.

Harry is provoked by Draco Malfoy, who also mocks the Weasleys for their lack of wealth and money. A scuffle breaks out, but Umbridge jumps at the chance and uses it to make the Boy Who Lived even more angry and upset. Fortunately, this ban gets overturned once Umbridge leaves (more on that later). But Fred and George are long gone by that point, flying to freedom after growing fed up with her tyrannical rule.

She Hurt Hedwig

Hedwig with Harry Potter

In the fifth book of the series, Harry is devastated when he learns of an attack on his owl, Hedwig. At this moment in time, the Ministry of Magic is eager to clamp down on the Boy Who Lived and, as a result, Umbridge requests that Harry's owl be intercepted so they can check his mail.

Fortunately, no long-lasting damage is done. Dobby and Professor Grubby-Plank both nurse the owl back to full health and she lives out the rest of her days in happiness. However, she's brutally killed off in the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, dying as Harry is taken from 4 Privet Drive to The Burrow.

She Struggled To Inspect Minerva McGonagall

McGonagall Umbridge Order Phoenix

In the fifth movie, fans get to see Umbridge inspecting other teachers at Hogwarts. She insults Filius Flitwick by using a tape measure to measure his height, irks Severus Snape by asking him questions about his past, and leaves Sybill Trelawney in a state of panic and distress when she examines her teaching of Divination.

In the book, however, Umbridge struggles when it comes to Minerva McGonagall. The Hogwarts deputy stands up to her rival, giving blunt responses to her questions and criticizing her for regularly interrupting when she's trying to teach. This would have been fun to see but, instead, there's just a short scene where McGonagall and Umbridge trade verbal blows.

She Attacked Minerva McGonagall

McGonagall stood up to Umbridge, but the villain gets her revenge in the Order of the Phoenix book. Late at night, Umbridge and a few Ministry Aurors try to cart Rubeus Hagrid off to Azkaban in a moment witnessed by Harry himself, who is sitting his Astronomy exam at the time.

Hagrid is able to get away, fleeing with his loyal dog, Fang. But McGonagall, who walks out to intervene, is hit bang in the chest by multiple stunning spells. It's lucky she wasn't killed, given her age, but she has to spend most of the year stuck at St Mungo's hospital making a full recovery, meaning she isn't there for Harry when he needs her most.

She Had No Say In Trelawney's Replacement

McGonagall saves Trelawney from Umbridge in Harry Potter

The Order of the Phoenix blockbuster shows Umbridge ruthlessly sacking Trelawney, having been left far from impressed by her teaching of Divination. It's horrible to see Trelawney so upset, but Albus Dumbledore is there to help her, bluntly informing Umbridge that she's still free to live at Hogwarts while he is headmaster.

What the movie doesn't show is who replaces Trelawney. The source material sees Firenze the Centaur drafted in, with the creature given a brilliant classroom that resembles a forest. Umbridge is livid and, when she objects, she's told she would only be able to replace Firenze if she was headmistress. That eventually happens, but she still can't get rid of Firenze, and he ends up staying at the school, even once Trelawney is reinstated.

She Banned The Quibbler

The Quibbler Magazine

Also in the fifth book, Harry gives an interview to the Quibbler. With the Daily Prophet refusing to tell the truth about Lord Voldemort's return, he enlists some help from unlikely allies Rita Skeeter and Luna Lovegood. He tells his story in full - much to Umbridge's fury.

She then bans all copies of the publication in Hogwarts but, amusingly, the ban has the opposite effect. Everyone at the school wants to read Harry's words and the ban makes it more popular.

She Was Banned From Albus Dumbledore's Office

Albus Dumbledore's office from Harry Potter

While on the subject of bans at Hogwarts, it's time to talk about Umbridge being prevented from living in Dumbledore's old office. Albus is removed from his post after taking the blame for the creation of Dumbledore's Army, the illegal group of Hogwarts pupils who get together to study Defence Against the Dark Arts practically, rather than merely reading about the subject in a book.

Afterward, in the book, Umbridge tries to move into Dumbledore's office. But she's left frazzled when the gargoyles refuse her entry, insisting she's not the rightful leader of the school. As a result, she has to control her affairs from her own office, which probably doesn't have items like the Sorting Hat, Pensieve, or Godric Gryffindor's old sword.

She Was Hassled Upon Leaving Hogwarts

The centaurs in Harry Potter

Umbridge is left in the Hospital Wing after she's attacked by Centaurs in response to her horrible rant about their existence. Afterward, she tries to sneak out of Hogwarts quietly - but things don't go to plan.

Instead, Peeves the Poltergeist relishes one last chance to terrorize her. He uses McGonagall's walking stick to beat her over the head with a bag of chalk, leaving her running out of the castle in terror and amusing all the students at the same time. This would have been funny to see, but Peeves, despite being a menace in the source material, never appears on the big screen.

She Went To Azkaban

Professor Umbridge and Harry in Harry Potter

Lord Voldemort's downfall is a jubilant moment for all good guys and girls in the wizarding world. And, in The Deathly Hallows novel, it's explained how, almost immediately after his death, all villains around the world are rounded up and held accountable for their horrible actions in supporting The Dark Lord.

This means that Umbridge gets locked away behind bars in Azkaban. And let's face it, this is exactly where she belongs.
