The Harry Potter films are beloved by most non-book readers. However, they have been rather divisive amongst those hardcore Potterheads, who have both watched and read the installments (with many unpopular opinions shared on Reddit regarding them). The latter definitely believes there is so much good stuff missing from the movies and a lot of stuff ruined or expanding.

For a lot of crucial subplots, the movies elect to just throw in the bare minimum. While usually storylines in the movies are better off replaced or expanded on, some should be cut altogether.

Expanded: Dobby's Importance

Dobby is a fan-favorite character and a crucial ally of Harry's throughout his story. In the movies, though, he is absent for the middle of the saga, only having a role in The Chamber Of Secrets and The Deathly Hallows.

A lot of fans, particularly book fans, wanted more of Dobby. In the books, Dobby helps Harry find the Room of Requirement and gives him the Gillyweed, but he is absent in both corresponding movies. In general, the Harry Potter movies also didn't include other house-elves or SPEW.

Cut: 'Jock' Viktor Krum

Many Harry Potter characters just did not translate to the movies well enough, being presented far different from their counterparts, such as Ginny and Ron. Viktor Krum is another character and what the movies changed about him was so unnecessary.

The movies chose to make Krum a dumb jock. In the books, he has an actual personality; he and Hermione make sense. Ginny and Ron are in every movie and have many traits, so they cannot simply be completely cut. Krum, though, appeared in one movie (not counting deleted scenes), and his entire personality was being a brooding jock. It really had no place and should have been cut in favor of a more sensical, relatable, and better version of the character.

Expanded: Barty Crouch Jr.

Barty Crouch Jr. was the reason for one of the most shocking twists in Harry Potter, but even with that reveal, there were so many questions surrounding the character and, with some stuff not making as much sense as they did in the books.

For one, in the movie, it is immediately obvious that Crouch is a Death Eater as it is announced in the courtroom scene; he makes it very apparent, whereas, in the books, there is more of a mystery. Overall, though, the character deserved expansion beyond his time as Moody. How did he escape Azkaban, for example? The character ended up being one-dimensional, and it did not have to be that way.

Cut: Grawp

Grawp is a part of Hagrid's storyline of getting Giants to join the fight against Voldemort and is also a significant reason for the plot dragging in The Order Of The Phoenix.

The character and the entire story of him are unnecessary. Although it leads to Hermione taking Umbridge to the forest, where the Headteacher is taken by Firenze, that could have easily been done in any other way than with Grawp. He really adds nothing to the movie and the fact that so many other phenomenal Harry Potter characters are left out is quite disappointing.

Expanded: The Identity Of The Half-Blood Prince

Most book fans will point to The Half-Blood Prince being one of, if not the worst, Harry Potter movie, as it missed out so much and had so much unnecessary stuff throughout.

One crucial aspect of the movie that was truly disappointing is its namesake and the titular character, the Half-Blood Prince. The reveal that it is Snape was so wasted. For movie fans who have not delved into the books or the wider world, they are left asking questions, and for book fans who know the answers, it is frustrating that they do not get them on-screen.

Cut: The Burning Of The Burrow

The Burrow scene in The Half-Blood Prince is one of the most hated amongst book fans, one reason being that it is not actually in the books, and another being that it makes no sense.

It is not much of a storyline and is something fans want to be removed. It adds nothing to the movie, except giving Bellatrix as well as the underutilized Lupin and Tonks more screentime in the Harry Potter franchise. The Burrow is meant to be a safe spot for Harry, yet Death Eaters can just saunter up to it, easy as can be. This whole portion of the movie could have been replaced, with an expansion of storylines that actually matter.

Expanded: Neville's Parents

Neville Longbottom is a great character in the movies, and audiences do get a decent bit of information on Neville's parents. However, book and movie fans alike wanted to see more of them.

St. Mungo's and the appearance of Neville's parents could have added so much more weight to various heroic Neville scenes and to Neville's character overall. Seeing St. Mungo's could have also allowed audiences to see Lockhart again and give a glimpse into various magical ailments.

Cut: Teen Romance

This is not to say the movies should be void of romance; it is a central theme of the books and films. However, the sheer volume and lack of quality in a lot of it were too much.

A lot of Ginny and Harry's scenes didn't feel natural since a lot of context was missing. Also, too much time was spent paying attention to Ron and Lavender rather than building on stuff like character backgrounds, and in general, there was too much low-quality typical teen romance. Cutting a lot of this out and focusing on couples that matter would have been far better.

Expanded: The Marauders

The Marauders in Harry Potter

Another Severus Snape-related aspect of the movies that did not get the attention it sorely deserved was the Marauders, who are sporadically seen and sorely needed expansion.

Despite appearing in scenes, the history of the Marauders goes unexplained. The Marauder's Map exists and is crucial but there is a bunch of facts missing from the Harry Potter movies about the map. There is not a quick explanation over who the Marauders actually are, when and why they created the map, not even an explanation from Lupin on how he knows what it is when he confiscates it.

Expanded: The Backstory Of Tom Riddle

Young Tom Riddle in Harry Potter Half Blood Prince

One of the biggest injustices of the movies in terms of storylines that are in the movies but are minimal and unexplained is the backstory of Tom Riddle, which is a highlight of the books.

Audiences see him in the orphanage when he meets Dumbledore, but do not get even a sliver of knowledge on Riddle's true psyche, how his mind was at the time. There is no Gaunt, none of Riddle's family, none of his finding of various Horcruxes, and it is honestly a tragedy that the movies never explored the character properly.
