The world of Harry Potter is full of complicated magic systems, vast family trees, and countless magical creatures. It's these features that make the world so enchanting for fans. Harry would not have made it very far in his adventures if it weren't for his knowledge of spells (or, most likely, Hermione's knowledge).

The spells used in the movies come straight from the books themselves. However, they are many spells the Golden Trio used in the books that did not make it into the movies.

Movie Spells

Accio

A charm used to summon objects. This charm is used many times throughout the books and films. For example, Harry uses it to summon his broom during the first task of the Triwizard Tournament.

Age Line

This is a charm is used to create a barrier that can only be crossed when someone meets an age requirement. This charm is also used in Harry Potter and the Goblet Fire to keep underage students from putting their names in the Goblet of Fire. Fred and George attempt to cross it but are immediately thrown out.

Aguamenti

A charm used to produce water from the tip of the user's wand. Harry used this spell to give water to Dumbledore after he drank the potion concealing the locket Horcrux.

Alarte Ascendare

Launches the target object or person into the air. Lockhart uses this when attempting to get rid of a snake created during second year dueling club.

Alohomora

Fluffy the three-headed dog growls at Harry, Ron, and Hermione in Sorcerer's Stone

A charm used to unlock locks. Hermione uses this to unlock the forbidden corridor in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Apparition

This spell allows wizards to teleport from one place to another. Similar to driving in the muggle world, wizards must pass a test to legally Apparate. If not done correcting, the caster may be splinched, meaning some part of their body did not apparate with the rest. This happened to Ron, although to a lesser degree, when escaping Death Eaters at the Ministry.

Arania Exumai

A charm used to get rid of spiders. Harry and Ron use it on Acromantulas in the Forbidden Forest during their second year.

Arresto Momentum

Used to slow the momentum of the moving target. Dumbledore used this charm in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban after a Dementor caused Harry to fall from his broom during a Quidditch match.

Ascendio

Launches the caster into the air. Harry used this in the second task of the Triwizard Tournament to leave the lake as his gillyweed lost effect.

Avada Kedavra

One of the Unforgivable Curses. Causes instant death in the target. Voldemort attempted to use this on Harry as a baby, but it rebounded and hit him instead.

Bombarda

A charm used to cause a small explosion. Hermione uses this to free Sirius in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban before he is taken back to Azkaban.

Bombarda Maxima

Used to cause a large explosion. Professor Umbridge uses this spell to break into the Room of Requirement and discover Dumbledore's Army.

Brackium Emendo

Lockhart looking off to the side in Harry Potter.

Supposedly used to mend broken bones. However, fans only see it used by Professor Lockhart who performs it incorrectly and somehow ends up completely removing the bones from Harry's broken arm.

Broom Jinx

This jinx causes the target's broom to behave erratically. Used by Professor Quirrell during Harry's first Quidditch match in an attempt to kill him.

Bubble-Head Charm

This charm creates a bubble of clear air around the nose and mouth so the user can breathe underwater. Used by both Cedric Diggory and Fleur Delacour during the second task of the Triwizard Tournament.

Capacious Extremis

An extension charm that makes the inside of an object larger without changing the outside dimensions. Hermione uses this on her bag in her seventh year to fit all the supplies they may need while on the run.

Cave Inimicum

Used to create a barrier that makes anyone inside undetectable to those outside the barrier. It is used by Hermione in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One to shield their various camps from Death Eaters and Snatchers.

Confringo

A curse that causes an explosion of fire. It was used by Hermione to defend herself from Nagini in Godric's Hollow.

Confundus Charm

This charm causes the target to become confused. Used on Cormac McLaggen by Hermione so that Ron would succeed in Quidditch tryouts.

Cruciatus Curse

The second Unforgivable Curse. Causes immense pain in the target. Alice and Frank Longbottom went insane after this curse was used on them for an extended period of time.

Diffindo

Used to make precise cuts. Ron uses this charm to remove the lace from his Yule Ball dress robes.

Diminuendo

Used to shrink objects. Some students used this charm during a Dumbledore's Army meeting.

Engorgio

A charm that causes the subject to rapidly grow in size. Barty Crouch Jr., disguised as Alastor Moody, briefly used this spell on an insect so that students could see him use the Unforgivable Curses on the bug.

Episkey

Used to heal minor injuries. It is used to heal Harry's nose after Draco Malfoy broke it.

Erecto

Used to erect a tent or structure such as the pavilion used for Bill and Fleur's wedding.

Everte Statum

Used to throw the target backward. Draco used this spell on Harry during the second year dueling club.

Expecto Patronum

Harry casting Expecto Patronum in Prisoner of Azkaban

This charm uses happy memories to create an animal guardian for the user. Remus Lupin first teaches it to Harry so that Harry may protect himself from the Dementors. Harry's Patronus is a stag just like his father.

Expelliarmus

Forces any objects the target is holding to fly out of their hand. Most commonly used on others' wands. This is one of the most commonly used spells in the series.

Expulso

Creates a small, pressurized explosion. Used by a Death Eater against the Golden Trio when they were on the run.

Fianto Duri

A charm used to create a shield. Used by Hogwarts Professors at the Battle of Hogwarts to protect the school from Voldemort's army.

Fiendfyre

A curse that creates large fires in the shapes of vicious animals. Used by Crabbe in the Room of Requirement in the final Harry Potter film.

Finite Incantatem

Cancels out any spells being used around the caster. Hermione uses it to stop a jinxed Quaffle from hurting Harry.

Firestorm Charm

This charm creates a large whirlwind of fire. Used by Dumbledore to save himself and Harry from an army of Inferi in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Geminio

A charm that causes objects to duplicate indefinitely. Used by the Lestrange family to defend the objects in their Gringotts vault.

Harmonia Nectere Passus

Draco Malfoy stands outside the Vanishing Cabinet at Borgin and Burkes in Harry Potter

Draco uses this spell during sixth year to repair a broken vanishing cabinet.

Hermione's Jinx

This spell was created by Hermione to protect Dumbledore's Army and discourage members from betraying it. The jinx causes a member to break out in boils that spell "Sneak" on their forehead if they betray the group.

Homenum Revelio

A charm that reveals any human presence near the caster. Used by Hermione when the trio is on the run and hiding in Grimmauld Place.

Homonculous Charm

Harry Potter holds the Marauders Map in The Prisoner of Azkaban movie.

This charm tracks the movements of humans. It was used by Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew, and James Potter to create the Marauders Map.

Horcrux Spell

This spell is used to take a piece of the caster's soul and fix it to an object so that a part of their soul will continue to live on after the rest of the soul dies. It was used by Voldemort to create seven Horcruxes.

Immobulus

A charm that immobilizes the target. Hermione used the charm to freeze a group of Cornish pixies in their second year.

Impedimenta

A jinx that slows down or completely stops the target. In a flashback, James Potter uses this spell on Snape during their school years.

Imperio

The Imperio Unforgivable Curse spell forces the victim to fall completely under the control of the caster

The final Unforgivable Curse. This spell forces the victim to fall completely under the control of the caster. After the First Wizarding War, many Death Eaters claimed Voldemort used this curse on them in order to void Azkaban.

Incarcerous

Conjures ropes from the wand and entangles the target. This was used by Umbridge in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix against a group of Centaurs.

Incendio

A charm that produces fire. Hagrid used this spell to light the fireplace when he arrived to take Harry to Hogwarts for the first time.

Inflatus

This jinx causes the target to inflate with air. Harry accidentally uses this on his Aunt Marge.

Lacarnum Inflamari

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - Hermione sets fire to Snape's cloak during the Quidditch match

A charm that causes the target to catch fire. Hermione uses this on Snape's cloak when she believed he was trying to hurt Harry during the Sorcerer's Stone Quidditch match.

Legilimens

The Legilimency spell allows the caster to see into the mind of the subject. Voldemort uses this against Harry, and so Professor Snape teaches Harry to use it defensively.

Levicorpus

This non-verbal jinx pulls the subject into the air by their ankles. It was invented by Snape but used against him by James Potter in their Hogwarts years.

Locomotor

A charm that levitates an object off the ground and allows the caster to move it around. Used by Nymphadora Tonks to move Harry's school trunk out of his room at the Dursley's.

Lumos

A charm that produces light from the tip of the caster's wand. Another easy charm that is used frequently throughout the series. Lumos Maxima can also be used to create a stronger light.

Mobilicorpus

A charm used to levitate and move bodies. This was used on a Muggle Studies professor by Voldemort to showcase her to other Death Eaters.

Morsmordre

A dark charm used to create the Dark Mark. Used by Barty Crouch Jr. at the Quidditch World Cup.

Muffliato

Creates a bubble around the caster that prevents others from over-hearing conversation within the bubble. Hermione often used it to conceal their many hidden campsites.

Nox

Harry Potter: Dumbledore arrives in Privet Drive, uses Nox to turn off the street lamps.

The counter-charm to Lumos, it extinguishes light from the tip of the wand. Harry used it in third year to attempt to hide from Professor Snape.

Oculus Reparo

A charm used to fix glasses. Hermione uses it to fix Harry's glasses when they first meet.

Obliviate

This charm can erase certain memories from the target's mind. Hermione uses this on her parents to remove all memory of herself.

Oppugno

This jinx makes an object attack the desired target. Hermione used it to make small paper birds attack Ron after he kissed Lavender Brown.

Partis Temporus

Albus Dumbledore surrounded by a ring of fire in Harry Potter

Creates a gap in whatever stands before the caster. Dumbledore used this to part the army of Inferni so that he and Harry could escape.

Periculum

A charm that creates red sparks that shoot from the caster's wand. It was used in the final task of the Triwizard Tournament to indicate that one of the competitors was in danger.

Petrificus Totalus

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Neville Longbottom Petrificus Totalus

A curse that binds the target's body and leaves them immobile. Hermione used it on Neville when he attempts to stop the Golden Trio from looking for the Sorcerer's Stone.

Piertotum Locomotor

Used to bring inanimate objects to life. Professor McGonagall casts it on the Hogwarts' statues to protect the school during the final battle.

Portus

Used to turn objects into Portkeys. Portkeys can then take users to specific locations with a single touch. Arthur Weasley and Amos Diggory use one to take their kids to the Quidditch World Cup.

Prior Incantato

Forces a wand to reveal the last spell is cast. The effects of this spell can be seen when Harry duels Voldemort for the first time in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. When two wands made from the same core, like Harry and Voldemort's, duel each other it causes them to reveal the last spell they had cast. That is why Cedric and Harry's parents appear during the duel as Voldemort had last used his wand to kill them.

Protego

A charm that creates a shield against other spells and people. Hermione taught this spell to Harry before the third Triwizard Tournament task. A stronger variation of the spell, Protego Maxima, is used during the Battle of Hogwarts.

Reducio

This charm shrinks the target object. Harry uses it when he accidentally creates a huge flame inside their tent while hiding from Death Eaters.

Reducto

A curse used to break items or even disintegrate them. Used by Ginny during a training exercise with Dumbledore's Army.

Relashio

This jinx forces objects and people to release anything they are attached to. Hermione uses it in Gringotts to free the dragon from its chains.

Reparo

The Sorcerer's Stone: Hermione uses 'Reparo' to fix Harry's glasses.

A mending charm that repairs broken objects. Used by Dumbledore to repair a homemade to look like a crime scene by Horace Slughorn.

Repello Muggletum

Used to hide magical places from muggles. Hermione uses this to hide their campsites.

Riddikulus

Used to change a boggart's appearance from something scary to something funny. Professor Lupin teaches Harry's third year class this spell.

Salvio Hexia

Used as a shield to protect from hexes. Hermione also uses this spell the guard their many campsites.

Sectumsempra

Created by Snape during his school years, this spells covers the victim in deep cuts. Harry used this spell on Draco in sixth year not knowing what it did.

Slugulus Eructo

Forces the victim to throw up slugs. Ron attempted to use this spell on Draco, but his broken wand forced it to backfire.

Stinging Jinx

This jinx stings the victim, often causing large welts. Hermione uses it to hide Harry's identity from Snatchers.

Stupefy

A charm that stuns the victim. A very common spell, Harry taught it to the members of Dumbledore's Army.

Unbreakable Vow

Bellatrix performs the Unbreakable Vow on Snape and Narcissa in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

A vow that cannot be broken. If someone under an Unbreakable Vow does violate the terms, they will die. Snape makes such a vow with Narcissa Malfoy, promising to kill Dumbledore if Draco cannot do it himself.

Vera Verto

A transfiguration spell used to turn animals into goblets. Professor McGonagall uses demonstrates it to the second years by turning a raven into a goblet.

Vipera Evanesca

Used to vanish snakes. Snape uses it during second year dueling club.

Vulnera Sanentur

A healing spell used to stop bleeding and mend wounds. Snape uses this on Draco after he is hit by the Sectumsempra spell.

Wingardium Leviosa

A charm that makes objects levitate. Ron uses it in first year to knock out a troll that had gotten into the school.

Spells Used In The Books Only

Amato Animo Animato Animagus

This is a transfiguration spell used to turn the user into an Animagus, giving them the ability to into an animal at will. The process is long and arduous and includes saying the incantation twice a day, every day before drinking the Animagus Potion.

Sirius Black, James Potter, and Peter Pettigrew became Animagi to help Remus Lupin through his werewolf transformations.

Anapeo

Used to clear the target's airway when they are choking. Professor Slughorn used it on Marcus Belby when the student choked at dinner.

Aparecium

A charm used to reveal any hidden messages or icons written with a concealing spell. Hermione attempted to use this spell on Tom Riddle's diary to no avail.

Bat-Bogey Hex

A hex used to turn the target's bogeys, or boogers, into bats that fly from their nose. Often used by Hogwarts students against other students they don't like.

Colloportus

Used to lock any lock, although it can be quickly undone with Alohomora. Hermione uses it in an attempt to slow down Death Eaters that are following her.

Defodio

A spell used to dig or carve into rock and dirt. Harry used this to carve the epitaph on Dobby's grave.

Densaugeo

Causes the target's teeth to grow abnormally large. Used on Hermione by Draco Malfoy.

Deprimo

Blasts holes into obstacles. Hermione uses this spell to escape the Lovegood house after Xenophilius alerts the Death Eaters to their whereabouts.

Descendo

Causes an object to fall. Used by Crabbe in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two to collapse a wall of junk in the Room of Requirement.

Disillusionment Charm

Used to make the target appear so uninteresting that they blend into crowds seamlessly. Alastor Moody cast the spell on Harry to conceal him.

Fidelius Charm

A complex charm used to hide information within a single person called a Secret-Keeper. The information cannot be revealed unless the Secret-Keeper willing volunteers to do so. This charm was used to make Peter Pettigrew the Secret-Keeper for James and Lily Potter. Pettigrew later betrayed the Potters by revealing their hiding place to Voldemort, effectively setting off the events of Harry Potter. These events are briefly touched on in the movies, but the spell itself is never mentioned.

Flipendo

Also known as the Knockback Jinx, this spell knocks target people or objects backward. Snape used this spell on Harry when escaping Hogwarts in sixth year.

Homonculous Charm

This charm tracks the movements of humans. It was used by Remus Lupin, Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew, and James Potter to create the Marauders Map. Once again, the Marauders Map is used in the movies, but its creation is never referenced.

Imperturbable Charm

This charm creates an invisible barrier that blocks sound and prevents others from entering. Molly Weasley uses this spell during Order of the Phoenix meetings to prevent Fred and George from entering or over-hearing.

Jelly-Legs Jinx

Causes the subject's legs to become jelly and useless. Hermione used this jinx on Harry to force him to practice his shield charm before the final Triwizard Tournament task.

Obscuro

Used to blindfold the target. Hermione used this in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to obscure the eyes of a portrait of Phineas Nigellus.

Rictusempra

This is a tickling charm that causes the target to buckle over in laughter. Harry uses it on Draco in second year dueling club. Harry also uses it in this instance in the movie, but the spell does not have the same effect.

Scourgify

A charm that cleans dirty objects. Tonks uses this spell to clean Hedwig's cage.

Silencio

A silencing charm. Hermione used it on a Death Eater who was about to give away their position.
