The very first Harry Potter book/film was the one that introduced us to the Wizarding World for the first time. A new world full of magic and intrigue that sat parallel to the world we already knew. While there are a lot of major plot points introduced in this film that we are all well-aware of (Harry’s move to Hogwarts and the re-emergence of Voldemort on the back of Quirrell’s head), there is also a lot we’ve forgotten.

We’ve listed ten things that happened in Harry’s first adventure that you may well have forgotten about.

We Learned About Vernon’s Career

The first chapter in the book that launched this global phenomenon introduced us to the character of Vernon Dursley and his career in detail early on.

He encountered a lot of wizards that day (much to his dismay) as we saw him driving to and from work: he was the director of a firm called Grunnings; a company that made drills.

An Early Mention Of Sirius Black

One of the best pieces of foreshadowing JK Rowling managed to sneak into the first Harry Potter was the subtle mention of Sirius Black. It was so subtle that many fans forget that he was even mentioned before the third novel.

When meeting Dumbledore and McGonagall at Privet Drive to drop off a young Harry, Hagrid explains that he borrowed a huge motorcycle (which allowed him to travel across England to deliver the babe) from “young Sirius Black”.

Harry Meets Quirrell Before School Starts

When Hagrid takes Harry to Diagon Alley for the first time, the two bump into Professor Quirrell in a pub, and he is introduced as a stuttering timid man who doesn’t seem fit to be a teacher.

It’s an easy to forget moment as the majesty of Diagon Alley blows us away only moments later, but the idea that Harry was face to face (well, face to back-of-face) with Voldemort so early on is quite spine-chilling when thought about.

The Philosopher’s Stone Was In Gringotts

The Philosopher’s Stone is such an important object that it needed guarding by the highest level of security the Wizarding World could offer, and that place was Gringotts Bank.

It’s early to forget, but before picking up his huge stack of money, Hagrid and Harry had to pick up a small object from a different (and highly protected) vault. This object seemed truly innocuous but it ends up being the centre of the entire first novel/film.

Professor Flitwick Looked Completely Different

We are used to a very specific look from Professor Flitwick. He has black hair and glasses and dresses rather immaculately in a tiny black suit. However, his appearance in The Philosopher’s Stone was rather different.

While still played by Warwick Davies, the first version of the character was covered in white hair and wore a very wizard-like green robe.

Voldemort Is Drinking Unicorn Blood

Unicorns don’t actually play a particularly big part in the world of Harry Potter, despite the fact that they’re one of the first magical creatures we are ever introduced to.

The cursed form of Voldemort spent a lot of time in the Forbidden Forest drinking the blood of unicorns. The idea of sacrificing a unicorn for its magical blood is not returned to in the series as it is both truly disturbing to most wizards and very risky due to the side effects that come with the act.

Hagrid Had A Pet Dragon

We do get to meet Norbert (who is later revealed to be female and jokingly renamed Norberta) in the film version of The Philosopher’s Stone, but it isn’t for a particularly long time as the dragon is only present for one scene.

Hagrid’s affinity for magical creatures is well known (from Aragog to Fang), but it is the presence of Fang as well as the small amount of screen time the dragon receives that allows us to forget about the fact that he once owned a baby dragon that lived in his tiny shack.

And They Had To Smuggle Him Out

The astronomy tower at Hogwarts

The part of Norbert’s existence that we don’t get to see on screen is his eventual eviction from the Hogwarts grounds. When he starts getting too big to take care of, Harry and Ron help Hagrid smuggle him to the top of the astronomy tower, where Charlie Weasley took care of him.

Unfortunately, their plan goes awry and they are caught sneaking around the school after hours. It was a very tense scene that should have been included.

Hermione Froze Neville

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Neville Longbottom Petrificus Totalus

The Neville we all remember from the end of the Harry Potter franchise is a very different character from the Neville we saw in the first film. Young Neville was timid and shy, but when Ron, Harry and Hermione were about to lose Gryffindor points again, he tried to stop them from leaving.

An apologetic Hermione was forced to place Neville under a body-bind curse, and his little blue face fell rigidly to the floor as they escaped.

But Neville Won The House Cup

It was, however, this act of bravery from Neville that ended up winning Gryffindor the house cup. One might remember that Ron, Harry and Hermione each won fifty points for their role in taking down Voldemort, but it was Neville who tipped the scales in favor of his house, through the ten points he achieved for ‘standing up to his friends’.

Though Neville was often the butt of every joke and seen as a bumbling side-character in the series, Dumbledore using his name to tip the scales in Gryffindor's favour was a brilliant way to give the boy a bit of glory and a reason for his housemates to cheer him on.
