Hermione Granger always was one of the smartest characters in the series - especially when one takes her youth into consideration. When Hermione first appeared in Harry Potter, she was just a child, and yet she already knew many more things than her classmates. Her intelligence was her defining feature and it helped her more than once during the darker times that were to come.

However, even intelligence isn't everything. Hermione also had to rely on the help of her friends - the people closest to her. And when all else failed, she sought help in her beloved books. Hermione did fine for herself, but there are still some sad facts about her life.

She Had To Erase Her Parents' Memory

Saying goodbye to one's family and loved ones is hard enough as it is. But Hermione took it one step further and actually erased herself from her parents' memory, making them forget they ever had a daughter named Hermione. And even though she did it to protect her parents while she went away to fight Voldemort, it couldn't have been an easy decision for her.

She Attacked Ron Because She Was Jealous

It's true that Ron didn't always treat Hermione right, especially when he dated Lavender Brown and he was less than discreet about their relationship. In fact, he had the tendency to throw it right into Hermione's face.

That said, Hermione, with all her intelligence, still could have acted in a more appropriate way instead of attacking Ron with the birds she conjured up. That made her seem quite immature, even though she wasn't.

Harry And Ron Hurt Her Feelings

Harry Potter - Mountain Troll

Harry, Hermione, and Ron didn't automatically become friends the moment they met. In fact, Ron didn't like Hermione very much since she always had an answer for everything.

Hermione also enjoyed making other people see when they were wrong about something. That led to Ron publicly insulting her without realizing Hermione was nearby. And when she ran to the bathroom to cry her eyes out, the troll went after her.

She Almost Died ... Multiple Times

Studying at Hogwarts is dangerous, sometimes almost deadly. And Hermione had a close brush with death on more than one occasion - all during the first 17 years of her life!

That seems like quite a load for such a young person. There was the time the troll almost killed her, then the basilisk petrified her, Voldemort's snake attacked Hermione, and the list goes on.

Bellatrix Tortured Her

By far, one of the most dangerous situations for Hermione happened when Bellatrix tortured her - partially for information, but also for the fun of it. The trio fell into their enemies' hands when the Snatchers captured them. They took them into Draco's family Manor and Bellatrix had the time of her life torturing Hermione, both physically and mentally.

Ron Ruined The Yule Ball For Her

Even though Ron only asked Hermione as a last resort when he couldn't get a date for the Yule Ball, he still was jealous of her when he learned she went with someone else. Double more so when he realized Hermione's date was none other than Viktor Krum, the famous Quidditch player. Ron then confronted Hermione about her date, he was rude to her and even made her cry.

She Married The Wrong Guy

Marrying almost the first guy a girl dates isn't always the best idea. Hermione married Ron, who was her school sweetheart, but on a closer look, these two don't have that much in common. Hermione is ambitious, Ron isn't, and they seemed to want different things from life.

Not to mention all the ugly ways they treated each other in the past. Even the author herself, J.K. Rowling said that she made a mistake when she paired Ron and Hermione.

Her Friends Abandoned Her ... More Than Once

Hermione, Ron, and Harry might be the main heroes of the books, the ultimate trio, but they weren't always such good friends or even friends at all. One such example is when Harry and Ron both stopped speaking with Hermione in the third year of studies, simply because Ron believed that Hermione's cat killed his pet rat (who, of course, later turned out to be the villainous Peter Pettigrew).

She Was Bullied

Even when Hermione and her two best friends got along, there were other instances when people didn't treat her right. Hermione was always different than most of her classmates, which set her apart from them, and they bullied Hermione for it - mostly by picking on her and insulting her verbally.

Draco Malfoy called her Mudblood, Pansy Parkinson insulted her repeatedly, and even her fellow Gryffindors, Parvati and Lavender, weren't always kind to Hermione.

The Films Idolized Her

The Hermione of the books and the one in the films share a lot of traits - but all in all, the films made her into a more perfect character, something that some fans took away from her true character.

For one, she's noticeably more attractive than she was described in the books, and there's also the fact that the films gave Hermione some scenes and lines that previously belonged to other characters (Ginny, for example). This makes the film Hermione less relatable than her book version and some fans felt it was a bit sad that the book version of her wasn't enough.
