Rupert Grint reveals what it would take to get him to play his Harry Potter character, Ron Weasley, once again. Alongside Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, Grint starred in all eight Harry Potter films from the time he was 11. Grint played Ron, loyal best friend to Radcliffe's titular Boy Who Lived. To this day, the Harry Potter series remains one of the most successful film franchises of all time. 2021 marks the 20th anniversary of the first movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and the 10th anniversary of the final, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2.

Though it looks like the Wizarding World was finished after the release of The Deathly Hallows - Part 2, recent years have seen an uptick in content. Warner Bros. is in the midst of their Fantastic Beasts prequel series, which will release its third film next year, and a Harry Potter television show is reportedly in the works at HBO Max. Additionally, many wonder if a movie could ever be made from the sequel stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, though nothing is happening just yet.

With all these projects in the works, the question for Harry Potter alums is always the same: Would they ever return? Grint recently spoke with Esquire about the second season of his Apple TV+ series Servant and touched upon whether he would consider playing Ron once again. Grint was reluctant to say yes, explaining, "I think going back now would be... I can't really imagine it. But, I mean, never say never." He added that there's one reason why he would say yes to coming back: "It would only be if everyone else wants to do the same." Otherwise, Grint said, "But yeah, no… I think just leave it."

Future Ron Weasley

Grint's reluctance is understandable, particularly since Harry Potter made up such a large portion of his life. For one thing, some might say the magic lies with the original movies, and to try and harness that again would be to lose it instead. For another, Grint spoke recently about the tougher aspect of filming Harry Potter for ten straight years, describing it as "suffocating" at times. Fans will always see Grint as their Ron, but he has the right to move on from it.

However, it does sound like Grint would be open to returning if those like Radcliffe and Watson did as well. The potential Cursed Child movie looks like the best chance at getting the original Harry Potter cast to reunite, though there's also the HBO Max series to consider. Right now, there are no clear plans for anyone to return, and it might remain that way. While it would be nice to see Harry, Ron, and Hermione back together once more, their time in the Wizarding World just might be over for good.
