The Harry Potter movies failed Ginny Weasley in terms of compelling development and significance, and the reunion special commits the same crime to the character and actress. When adapting the novels, Harry Potter’s directors and writers had to decide which aspects were necessary to keep in, and which would be removed due to time constraints. One such adaptation failure for Harry Potter’s movies was that of Ginny Weasley, who was vastly underserved and made fairly insignificant compared to her novel treatment, particularly in reference to her romance with Harry.

In the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts reunion, HBO Max brings back plenty of the original directors and stars, including most of the Weasley family. Alongside James and Oliver Phelps’ Fred and George, Mark Williams’ Arthur, and Rupert Grint’s Ron, Bonnie Wright returns to reminiscence on her Harry Potter role as the youngest primary character, Ginny Weasley. Wright appeared in every Harry Potter movie as Ginny, initially serving the role of Ron’s younger sister until she grew into the substantial character that would be Harry’s main love interest. While Wright’s Ginny ended up being important to Harry’s character development, the actress had extremely limited screen time to discuss her experience, which was less about the Harry-Ginny romance than being part of the Weasley family.

Considering Harry and Ginny are intended to be the most significant romance outside of Ron and Hermione, Harry Potter viewers have long criticized the films’ treatment of Ginny. In the movies, she hardly gets a few words in, and is largely a two-dimensional character that must suddenly become the love of Harry’s life in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Once Harry and Ginny truly began their romance, it felt awkward, which was more a testament to the script rather than Bonnie Wright. Six movies in, Daniel Radcliffe and Bonnie Wright didn’t have much chemistry as Harry and Ginny, which was partially difficult for Radcliffe because he reportedly mostly just thought of Bonnie as being the youngest actress in a little sister role. The reunion even dedicates an entire retrospective section about their romance, but it doesn’t even have Harry actor Daniel Radcliffe and Bonnie Wright discuss it together in the same way Emma Watson and Rupert Grint talk about their characters' romance. The insignificance that the reunion gives to Ginny’s character and Bonnie Wright’s role in the Harry Potter romance is just another repetition of the errors of the movies in adapting her.

The Harry Potter reunion’s look back on Harry and Ginny is described much more by Daniel Radcliffe and his memories, whereas Bonnie Wright’s only real comment is about remembering it to be so important because her character was falling in love with the hero of the story. In the novels, Ginny was a much more compelling character and the budding romance between her and Harry felt organic and deserved, whereas it was more contrived in the movies. When Ginny Weasley and Harry finally got together in the later movies, Wright and Radcliffe didn’t have much chemistry, which may be part of why their romance was pushed to the side in terms of the overall plot. The Harry Potter reunion reflects this insignificance of their relationship from the movies, as they don’t even place Wright and Radcliffe in a room together to discuss it.

Bonnie Wright’s role in the Harry Potter reunion is primarily used to reflect on the Weasley family dynamic, as she hardly gets the chance to comment on the actual growth or importance of her character. The reunion had the chance to reflect on Wright, and thus Ginny, in a more important light considering her significance to Harry’s story in retrospect, but ended up committing the same movie error by minimizing her presence. The reunion clearly had an abundance of Harry Potter actors and characters to reconnect with, but Bonnie Wright and Ginny Weasley once again got the short end of the stick.
