Harry Potter quiz show and retrospective special are on the way at HBO Max. The beloved franchise began in 1997 with the release of the first book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. In the following years, it became nothing short of a phenomenon, maintaining that status well after the seventh and final book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, released in 2007. The film adaptations only increased enthusiasm for the series, with the first movie releasing in 2001 and the last in 2011.

Though the Harry Potter franchise remains loved by many, it's fallen out of favor with some in recent years. This can largely be chalked up to transphobic statements made by author J.K. Rowling, which have alienated many who previously found comfort in the series. However, follow ups set in the world of Harry Potter, including the play Cursed Child and the Fantastic Beasts movies, haven't helped matters, as some long-time fans have been disappointed by those projects. Still, the franchise remains extremely valuable to WarnerMedia, with news coming in early 2021 that Harry Potter TV show is reportedly in development for HBO Max.

While there are no concrete details on that series as of now, there is new Harry Potter content coming later in 2021. THR reports a quiz show and retrospective special are on the way in honor of the first film's 20th anniversary. There's no release date as of now, but the two will air across five nights on HBO Max, Cartoon Network, and TBS. The quiz show is currently casting for players to compete in its four episodes, which will also include "special guests." There will also be an opportunity for those watching at home to play along online. Tom Ascheim, who is in charge of Harry Potter at Warner Bros., called the quiz show and special a "one-of-a-kind celebration."

Harry Potter Cast Young

Both the quiz show and retrospective special seem like wise moves for WarnerMedia. Harry Potter trivia nights have exploded in popularity over the last few years, so the quiz show features a tried and true concept. Though it likely won't be as fun to watch as it would be to compete, the play-along aspect online should help matters. The "special guests" will be a big draw for many viewers, as it seems likely they'll be actors from the Harry Potter movies.

The retrospective special will also be a good way to honor the anniversary of the first Harry Potter movie. Though there isn't as much information about that project at this time, it seems probable it will include clips from the film and perhaps interviews with those who worked on. Hopefully, more information about the anniversary event comes out soon, including a release date.
