Hagrid is among one of Hogwarts' most beloved teachers. He is laid back, loves animals, and is not afraid to be a loyal friend to his students. When Harry Potter's first book came out, Hagrid was the readers and Harry's prologue to the wizarding world. Also, he broke into a home with a birthday cake. What better entrance is there than that?

Sometimes it is the most laid back people who have the best wisdom, and Hagrid is an example of that. Sure, Dumbledore may have him beat but Hogwarts' headmaster is also a bit of a schemer. Hagrid could never even keep a secret! So here are some quotes from one of Hogwarts' best teachers.

...Never Be Ashamed

Hagrid from Harry Potter

Full Quote:

I am what I am, an’ I’m not ashamed. ‘Never be ashamed,’ my ol’ dad used ter say, ‘there’s some who’ll hold it against you, but they’re not worth botherin’ with.

Being half-human and half-giant, Hagrid had to deal with a lot of bigotry. In fact, the evilness of bigotry is a huge theme in Harry Potter. You see it with how wizards feel about "Purebloods" versus "Mudbloods." You see classism and privilege mixed into the various families such as the Malfoys.

So this quote of Hagrid's is a big one based on these themes. Do not be ashamed of who you are, even in the face of bigots. They are not worth your thoughts.

No good sittin’ worryin’ abou’ it. What’s comin’ will come, an’ we’ll meet it when it does.

This quote should probably be written on the walls of everyone who suffers from anxiety. As mentioned before, Hagrid is a well-loved character and part of that is because he is laid back.

We want to be him. We also want to not worry about our lives, meet things as they come, and live next to a mystical and spooky forest while sipping hot cocoa in a warm hut.

Well, yeh might’ve bent a few rules, Harry, bu’ yeh’re all righ’ really, aren’ you?

An aspect of Hagrid that makes him a cool teacher is that he is not exactly a stickler for the rules. He cannot keep a secret, sure, but he knows that breaking the rules does not automatically make you a bad or unjust person.

Also, note that he says "bent a few rules." Any teacher who loves rules would say "break" rather than "bent." Or maybe it is less about rules and more about his loyalty to Harry, which is also cool.

...I'll Do It

Full Quote:

It’s me home, it’s bin me home since I was thirteen. An’ if there’s kids who wan’ me ter teach ’em, I’ll do it.

Like all the likable characters found in Harry Potter, Hagrid is brave. After Dumbledore's death, the future of Hogwarts was in doubt. However, despite the school's most powerful wizard dying, Hagrid decided to stay even when it meant laying his life on the line.

Hagrid is a man who loves his job. It is his passion and life. The students and teachers are like family to him.

They’re jus’ nutters, Hermione. Don’ open ’em if yeh get any more. Chuck ‘em straigh’ in the fire.

Hagrid shared these words to Hermione when she received hate mail from Rita Skeeter in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Hagrid shares that he actually got hate mail from her too.

I got some o’ those letters an’ all, after Rita Skeeter wrote abou’ me mum. 'Yeh’re a monster an’ yeh should be put down.' 'Yer mother killed innocent people an’ if you had any decency you’d jump in a lake.

He advises Hermione to not even bother reading them and to throw them into a fire. Hermoine opted to deal with the issue more directly, but Hagrid's words of wisdom still hold true.

I knew Sirius longer ’n yeh

Full Quote:

I knew Sirius longer ’n yeh did...he died in battle, an’ tha’s the way he’d’ve wanted ter go...But still, Harry...he was never one ter sit aroun’ at home an’ let other people do the fightin’. He couldn’ have lived with himself if he hadn’ gone ter help...

Hagrid said these words to comfort Harry while he was grieving the death of Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Harry was not only grieving, but he felt guilty for Sirius' death.

Hagrid tried to ease that guilt by pointing out that Sirius died doing what he thought was right. If he did not help Harry, then Sirius would have regretted that for the rest of his life. This was also very sweet, as Hagrid is complimenting how brave Sirius was.

Yeh know what I’d love, Harry?

Full Quote:

Yeh know what I’d love, Harry? I’d love yeh ter win, I really would. It’d show ’em all ... yeh don’ have ter be pure-blood ter do it. Yeh don’ have ter be ashamed of what yeh are. It’d show ’em Dumbledore’s the one who’s got it righ’, lettin’ anyone in as long as they can do magic.

Hagrid always had Harry's back, even as the world turned against him. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, while Harry was trying to win the Triwizard Tournament, Hagrid shared these words of encouragement to him.

Bless him, look, he knows his mummy!

Hagrid in Harry Potter

Hagrid had a soft heart for animals, and that was definitely the case with Norberta the dragon. He saw the best in what other people may consider as a monster. Hagrid talks like a total mom the moment Norberta hatches, and it is adorable.

It is sweet to see a teacher who also does not mind raising and loving a giant spider or lizard that breathes fire.

Never insult Albus Dumbledore in front of me.

Hagrid was loyal to Hogwarts, and that meant being loyal to the staff there as well, especially Albus Dumbledore. This quote was said in the first book and film before we even meet Dumbledore. The way Hagrid speaks of him makes us know immediately that Dumbledore is someone amazing and worthy of respect.

Harry, gotta bone ter pick with yeh...

Full Quote:

Harry, gotta bone ter pick with yeh. I've heard you've bin givin' out signed photos. How come I haven't got one?

This quote right here displays so much love and support for his student and friend. Not only is it love, but it is just funny and lighthearted compared to all the pain and suffering that Harry endures. In a way, he is a lot like Hogwarts itself. Hagrid is a shelter for his students in a harsh and cruel world.
