With the newest release of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore this year, many fans are still obsessed with the series predecessor, Harry Potter. The Harry Potter series introduced the wizarding world in 2001 and along with it, some dynamic and powerful characters that would carry the series for the next two decades.
From Harry Potter himself to the great Professor Dumbledore, the wizarding world has seen its fair share of powerful wizards through the years as ranked by Ranker. Whether it's the skill of transforming themselves into animals or just highly skilled in black magic, mere mortal or witch is no match for these strong and significant wizards.
Harry Potter
The main character of the Harry Potter series and the hero of the story, Harry Potter began his wizard journey at the young age of 11 years old. He was the first wizard to go up against Voldemort and live, earning him the title “the boy who lived”.
Although Harry is young, his magical experience is engraved inside him. He's the son of two extraordinary wizards and he holds a part of Voldemort's soul inside of him. Because of this, Harry has the ability of Parseltongue, the ability to speak to snakes, and he's a skilled broom flyer like his father. His age doesn't define his power and he's ultimately the one to defeat Voldemort in the final battle when he masters the Elder Wand.
Bellatrix Lestrange
Considered a true follower of Voldemort and probably one of his best lieutenants, Bellatrix Lestrange was a force to be reckoned with in the Harry Potter series. Her power existed through her cruelty and ability to use her skills for evil.
Viewers get to see just how powerful she is when she's able to easily cast the Cruciatus Curse with full force, however, when Harry attempts to do so, he causes little to no damage. Bellatrix enjoys using her magic to taunt and torture, so it's only fitting that she meets her end at the hands of the good and just, Molly Weasley.
Sirius Black
Godfather to Harry and the best friend of the deceased James Potter, Sirius Black was first introduced in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He was loyal to James and Lily Potter even after their deaths and made it his mission to protect Harry Potter at all costs.
In the wizarding world, Sirius was exceptionally skilled in the magic of Animagus and would often transform himself into a black dog. He chose to fight against his family's beliefs and stand for good. He was powerful in his commitment and devotion to make sure Harry Potter lived as normal life as possible while also protecting him with his own life.
Remus Lupin
Another protector of Harry Potter and best friend to James Potter, Remus Lupin was a member of the Order of the Phoenix and professor at Hogwarts. Although he held the curse of lycanthropy, he didn't let this turn him into a monster.
Remus was among the best professor of dark arts at Hogwarts and made it his mission to prepare the students for the unexpected. He was a skillful duellist and held extensive knowledge of dark creatures that aided him in his teachings at Hogwarts and in the battle against Voldemort and his followers.
Gellert Grindelwald
A dark wizard looking to start his movement in the wizarding world among muggles, Gellert Grindelwald is not only ambitious but incredibly powerful. Before the era of Voldemort, Grindelwald was known as the most powerful dark wizard in the wizarding world.
His magical ability was unmatched and seen as just as powerful as Dumbledore. He not only had the magical ability to strike fear across the wizarding world but he also had the charisma to gain a following to stand behind him and do his bidding when asked.
Hermione Granger
The best friend of Harry Potter and girlfriend to Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger is one of the most skillful and powerful muggle witches at Hogwarts. She's the voice of reason among her friends and is fiercely loyal to Harry. She's had some top tier quotes that prove she's the best wizard in the series, if not the most powerful.
From the beginning of the series, viewers are introduced to an education-obsessed Hermione that takes her learning seriously. Because of this, she's exceptionally competent and experienced in charms and spells. She showcases her skills when she saves Sirius from the Dementors in Prisoner of Azkaban and figures out their weaknesses.
Lord Voldemort
The antagonist for the entirety of the Harry Potter series, Lord Voldemort aka Tom Riddle, although troubled, was once an exceptional student of Hogwarts. He soon became obsessed with being the most powerful wizard in the world and transformed himself into the unrecognizable monster viewers see in the films through the use of Horcrux magic.
His magical ability was unmatched in the dark arts leading to him being feared by many with his name becoming forbidden to speak. Through his powerful use of Horcrux magic, Voldemort was able to split his soul into pieces to achieve ultimate power. He's eventually defeated by Harry Potter, however, he will still live on as one of the most feared and powerful wizards in the wizarding world.
Professor McGonagall
Head of the Gryffindor House and a professor of transfiguration, Professor McGonagall is a powerful witch that would eventually become the Headmistress of Hogwarts after the demise of her friend, Professor Dumbledore. McGonagall gave the best pieces of advice to her students sometimes and considered one of the favorite teachers among the students of Hogwarts.
She's highly skilled in all forms of magic, however, she excels in Transfiguration and Animagus, usually taking the form of a golden cat. She leads the charge in protecting Hogwarts and its students when the school is under attack by followers of Voldemort, with her eventually defeating these threats through her magical ability and mastery.
Professor Snape
One of the most complex and misunderstood characters from the Harry Potter series, Severus Snape is head of the Slytherin House and number one antagonist against Harry Potter in his first few years at Hogwarts.
Snape is skilled in defense against the dark arts and brewing powerful potions. He's technically Professor Dumbledore’s right-hand man, so it's only reasonable that he's almost as powerful as Dumbledore. His intelligence and decietfulness is what aids him in the films and provides him with the ability to fool even the ruthless Voldemort down to the final moments that he gives his life in the fight against the dark wizard.
Professor Dumbledore
Considered one of the best and most powerful wizards in the Harry Potter films, Professor Albus Dumbledore is the headmaster of Hogwarts School Of Magic and founder of the Order of the Phoenix. Dumbledore faced a lot of tragedy in his life, however, this didn't steer him away from becoming one of the most powerful wizards in the world, even feared by Voldemort himself.
Dumbledore was a master of the Elder Wand and excelled in all fields of magic. His greatest strength, however, is that he was always able to keep his composure and plan for any dire situation that may have arisen. He gave his life so Harry Potter could defeat Voldemort and he will forever live on as one of the most powerful wizards in the wizarding world.
