Astrology is a vital part of the Potterverse, especially seeing that it was a prophecy that determined Harry Potter’s fate even before he was born. It was also a prophecy, thanks to Professor Trelawney, that foresaw the events that would eventually lead to the final Battle of Hogwarts.

In the Harry Potter universe, The Daily Prophet ran a horoscope section at the time when Harry was in school. It would be fun to look at how some of the main characters in the canon seem to fit their zodiac signs perfectly while some others do not necessarily comply. Some of the signs can be made out from the characters’ birth dates while others from their birth months. As in astrology, there is some vagueness regarding some of the dates since Rowling does not exactly offer us a list in the books themselves!

Fits: Luna Lovegood

Let us start with a character that was not part of the first few books but became quite a major one from Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix onwards. Luna is a weirdo but in a good way. She doesn’t seem to have too many close friends, possibly because of her strange ways and seems to live in a world of her own, full of curious magical creatures.

Luna was born on the 13th of February, which means that she was an Aquarius. Aquarians are unique in their creativity, a bit eccentric, somewhat detached and despite their kind and generous nature, can turn out to be a loner. They also represent the air element of the zodiac signs. That’s Luna to the tee, right?

Doesn’t Fit: Rubeus Hagrid

The good-natured giant, Hagrid, is one of the most beloved characters in the Potterverse, not least because he was one of the best friends that Harry, Ron, and Hermione had at Hogwarts. Hagrid was the most warm-hearted person; he was loyal with a friendly disposition and Dumbledore once said he would trust Hagrid with his life.

Hagrid was born in early December, thus making him a Sagittarius. Sagittarians are said to be extrovert, upbeat, creative and philosophical and are often described as lively and fun. However, while Hagrid is a good friend to have, he might not be the most creative or philosophical person and we certainly don’t see him being too much fun.

Fits: Neville Longbottom

Neville Longbottom goes from being rather pathetic, and definitely the most unfortunate student at Hogwarts, to one of the bravest Gryffindors to fight in the Battle of Hogwarts. Neville was a Leo, born on 30th July, a day before Harry. In fact, Professor Trelawney’s prophecy said that a boy born in July would cause Voldemort’s downfall, so Neville was the other boy that the prophecy might have referred to.

Neville was a loyal friend and grew up to be a brave young man. He had his heart in the right place and although his early years in Hogwarts did not make him a proper Leo, he definitely went on to be a perfect one as the years progressed.

Doesn’t Fit: Minerva McGonagall

Professor McGonagall is one of the professors who had Harry’s back through the many ups and downs he faced while at Hogwarts. Deputy headmistress at Hogwarts, the school cannot be imagined without Professor McGonagall holding fort.

McGonagall is a Libra, and suffice it to say that she exhibits quite opposite tendencies to Libras in general. Libras are shy, romantic, charming and at times flirtatious. They are also seen as easy-going and relaxed, but McGonagall, while she was badass in most things, was far from easy-going and definitely not shy or romantic. Of course, we do not see her in her younger days, but when we do meet her, she is stern, and a tough nut to crack.

Fits: Draco Malfoy

Draco is Harry’s nemesis in school from day one. He is the insolent son of Death Eaters, Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy, and is snarky, cunning and quick-witted from the moment we meet him.

Draco was born under the Gemini sign. Those born under this sign are often said to be sarcastic, backstabbing, nosy, shallow and whimsical. And Malfoy with his sly intelligence and his superficial charms fits the bill perfectly.

Doesn’t Fit: Severus Snape

Severus Snape

Severus Snape is literally the unsung hero of the Potterverse. He is a gloomy man, and the students both hate and fear him. Snape is a Capricorn and interestingly, while he has one or two of the general characteristics of this sign, he contradicts most of the other traits of a Capricorn’s personality.

True to his zodiac sign, Snape has a reserved nature and is able to see things through to the end. However, nowhere in the books do we read about him being practical or materialistic; he was also not shown as necessarily prudent in his decisions, which are the traits of a Capricorn.

Fits: Hermione Granger

Hermione is one of the cleverest witches of her generation. She is bookish to the point of being almost a know-it-all, she is uncommonly intelligent and one of Harry’s closest friends and comrades.

Hermione was born under the Virgo sign. She represents the earth element — she is loyal, hardworking, studious with attention to details and an analytical mind. She is self-willed with a strong sense of humanity and can be overly critical at times. As a whole, she suits her zodiac perfectly.

Doesn’t Fit: Ron Weasley

Ron is an understated hero in the Potterverse; he has qualities that are not necessarily daredevil but forms the backbone of Harry’s support system. Ron is loyal to a fault, completely trustworthy and his friendship with Harry makes him face his own fears and show extraordinary bravery.

Ron is a Pisces. Those who belong to this sign are believed to be romantic, secretive and imaginative, none of which describes Ron Weasley. God knows he was not romantic at school, although Hermione might be able to attest to that better. He was also not secretive in the least and had next to no imagination.

Fits: Harry Potter

Harry is a brave young man. He is loyal, compassionate, generous and finds the courage to not even fear death as he willingly offers himself to Voldemort in the final moments of The Deathly Hallows.

Harry is a Leo, and true to his sign, he is shown to be heroic and lion-hearted. He represents the element of fire and although he was a bespectacled, knobbly kneed child, he soon grows into a fiery and charming young man. He is also possibly a bit lazy but always ready to fight injustice, which makes him a perfect Leo.

Doesn’t Fit: Tom Riddle

Tom Riddle or Lord Voldemort is evil personified. He is cruel and willing to go to any extent to achieve what he wants. He has committed the most heinous crimes and murdered people left, right and center.

Riddle is a Capricorn. Capricorns are ambitious, which Riddle is to a dangerous extent, but they are neither greedy nor immoral and they certainly do not lust for power. Voldemort takes his obsession for power to extreme levels and although he is described as a model student while in Hogwarts, which possibly means he was charismatic enough to make people like him, with time he loses any trace of humanity.
