In Harry Potter, friendship is extremely important. The friendships between Harry, Ron, and Hermione are central to the series, but they aren’t the only friendships that are important. While the trio might get the most focus, some of their other friends also exemplify the qualities of loyalty and friendship.
Other than Ron and Hermione, Neville and Luna are two of Harry’s closest friends. They provide him with a lot of support and help along his journey. So, here are the six times that Luan was a great friend to Harry as well as the four times that Neville was one of his best friends.
LUNA: SHE REMINDED HARRY THAT HE WASN’T ALONE
When Luna first meets Harry, he is going through a really difficult time. Harry has just lost Sirius, and he’s definitely struggling. He also notices the Thestrals, and this is just one thing that makes him feel like he’s going mad.
Luna is one of the only people around him who is able to provide support and remind him he’s not alone. She comforts him with the fact that she can also see the Thestrals, and she also shows her support in many small ways in their conversations.
NEVILLE: HE STUCK UP TO THE TRIO IN SORCERER’S STONE
When Neville is younger, he definitely isn't that confident in who he is. He’s not one of the popular kids, and he’s often made fun of and sticks to himself.
So, when Neville sticks up to Harry, Ron, and Hermione when they are about to leave to find the Sorcerer’s Stone, he is risking a lot. These are some of the only people who are friendly to him, and he knows he won’t be able to really beat them in a fight. But, he sticks up to them anyway because it’s the right thing, and sometimes challenging your friends is important.
LUNA: SHE WAS A BIG SUPPORTER OF DUMBLEDORE’S ARMY & HARRY’S TRUTHFULNESS
While Luna might be known for believing in unbelievable things, especially whatever her father prints in the Quibbler, she is also known for being really loyal.
Her support of Harry when most people don’t believe his story about Voldemort’s return is definitely important. Luna is instrumental in helping Harry get his version of the story out there using The Quibbler, and she also provides a lot of emotional support.
NEVILLE: HE WENT WITH HARRY TO THE DEPARTMENT OF MYSTERIES
Neville is definitely a character in Harry Potter who doesn't have it easy. He loses both his parents in a way from a young age, and his extended family is rather stern and judgemental.
He finds some of his own confidence through Dumbledore’s Army, and he also shows that he’s extremely brave and loyal. It’s no surprise then that he is one of the first people to volunteer to go with Harry to the Department of Mysteries to try and rescue Sirius.
LUNA: SHE HELPED HARRY AFTER DOBBY DIED
Luna is a great friend because she often knows just what to say to Harry to provide comfort and support during the most difficult times. She is one of the people in his life that is aware of his struggles and reminds him that he’s not alone.
So, when Dobby dies, it’s Luna who is the one who says they should say a few words in a sort of mini-funeral. This obviously means a lot to Harry, and it also illustrates the kind heart that Luna has.
NEVILLE: HE HELPED LEAD DUMBLEDORE’S ARMY IN HIS SEVENTH YEAR
Other than the trio, Neville, Ginny, and Luna are the three people who are the most supportive of Harry and his quest to destroy Voldemort.
These three are extremely loyal and dedicated to what Dumbledore’s Army does, and they continue on the cause even after Harry is gone to hunt the Horcruxes. This shows that Neville is a loyal friend, but it also shows that he’s a good person who tries his best to do the right thing.
LUNA: SHE HELPED LEAD DUMBLEDORE’S ARMY WHILE HARRY WAS GONE
While Neville was definitely extremely brave and loyal to the cause of Dumbledore’s Army and the Order of the Phoenix, he wasn’t the only one.
Ginny and Luna were also equally involved in starting Dumbledore’s Army again basically right under Voldemort’s nose. This takes an extreme amount of bravery, and it shows the kind of tough stuff that Luna is also made of.
NEVILLE: HIS BRAVERY & WAS ON HARRY’S SIDE DURING THE BATTLE OF HOGWARTS
During the Battle of Hogwarts, the strength and loyalty of his friends is something that gives Harry a lot of help and moral support during some of his darkest moments.
Neville is one of the characters who is extremely loyal, and one moment that shows his friendship is when he tells Harry that they are all going to keep fighting. Neville has definitely come into his own here.
LUNA: SHE ENCOURAGED HARRY TO CAST HIS PATRONUS AT THE BATTLE OF HOGWARTS
While Ron and Hermione might be the two main people that support Harry As much as possible up until the point he has to go things alone, Luna is also there in a key moment to offer support.
It’s Luna that reminds Harry to think of something happy and to have hope during the Battle Of Hogwarts when he needs to cast a Patronus. This is just another example of Luna being an extremely reliable and strong friend for Harry to rely on.
LUNA: THE BEAUTIFUL FRIENDSHIP MURAL SHE HAD ON HER WALL
As far as friendship is concerned, Luna clearly values her friends a lot. When Harry, Ron, and Hermione go to visit her home, they find that Luna isn’t there, but they do see that the mural she created.
This mural has Harry, Ron, Hermione, Neville, and Ginny surrounded by the word friends written over and over in gold. This is an extremely touching moment that shows just how much her friends mean to Luna.
