Luna Lovegood is one of Harry Potter’s friends at Hogwarts who is most influential in his life, outside of Ron and Hermione. While Luna might not come into the books until Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, her eccentric personality and loyalty to her friends makes her memorable and well-loved. While Luna might have many traits of her Ravenclaw house, she also has quite a few that would make her fit in well as a Gryffindor.

We’ve put together a list of the five reasons why Luna should have been in Gryffindor and the five reasons why she was rightfully sorted into Ravenclaw.

GRYFFINDOR: EXTREMELY LOYAL TO HER FRIENDS

One of the most talked-about and cited Gryffindor traits is loyalty. While people of other houses can also be loyal, and Hufflepuff is somewhat known for friendship and loyalty too, it’s Gryffindors that are considered the most loyal of all. These are the kind of people who would die for their friends and risk everything for the things and people they care for. In this sense, Luna is definitely a Gryffindor. She is willing to go with Harry to save Sirius, and her loyalty to her friends is clear.

RAVENCLAW: HER ECCENTRICITY

While there are people of all Hogwarts houses who are considered cool and popular as well as those considered somewhat weird, Luna’s eccentricity definitely makes the most sense for a Ravenclaw. While some Ravenclaws are much more serious and studious, being brainy and focused on intellect is often something associated with being eccentric too. Luna’s dreamy nature and inquisitive mind definitely make the most sense for someone in Ravenclaw.

GRYFFINDOR: NO SHORTAGE OF BRAVERY

Other than loyalty, one of the main things that Gryffindors are known for is being extremely brave. While this bravery can sometimes border on reckless, Gryffindors are the most likely to put their own lives at risk to save others. In this way, Luna would make a great Gryffindor. She shows a lot of bravery in the series when she is in Dumbledore's Army and especially when she re-starts the DA along with Neville and Ginny when Hogwarts is being taken over by Death Eaters.

RAVENCLAW: INTERESTED IN KNOWLEDGE FOR ITS OWN SAKE

There are many ways to be smart and intelligent, and being smart doesn't automatically make you a Ravenclaw. This is made clear by the fact that Hermione, Hogwarts' smartest student, isn’t a Ravenclaw. One thing that sets Ravenclaw’s apart is that they often have an interest in knowledge for its own sake. Many Ravenclaws just love to learn, whether it’s about charms or conspiracy theories. In this way, Luna definitely exemplifies Ravenclaw.

GRYFFINDOR: DEFINITELY HAS A LOT OF DARING

Being a Gryffindor from Harry Potter also means that you are likely to have a daring streak. While Luna isn’t always daring in the same way that someone super reckless like Harry is, she definitely has her daring side. This is shown in the ways she’s willing to stick up for her friends and resist the Dark Arts. It’s also there in how she is willing to be herself. It takes a lot of daring to live authentically, even if you get made fun of for it.

RAVENCLAW: LIKELY WOULDN’T HAVE FIT IN WELL IN GRYFFINDOR

While there are some basic traits that each Hogwarts house is associated with, there are also other things to consider about how a person would fit into a house. For example, while Harry might have Slytherin traits, he wouldn’t have enjoyed the vibe or the people there. This is also the case with Luna. She is a bit more dreamy and removed, and she likely wouldn’t have fit in with the Gryffindors, who are generally louder and more jock-like as a house.

GRYFFINDOR: VERY DETERMINED

While students in all of the houses can be determined in their own ways, Gryffindors are especially known for this trait. They can be a bit intense in their determination, and they can also be pretty stubborn. This is another way that Luna would fit in well as a Gryffindor. While quieter and off in her own head, she can also be rather stubborn in her ideas. She isn’t easily swayed against what she thinks and believes.

RAVENCLAW: QUITE SMART

While there are still varying levels of intellect among students in Ravenclaw, Luna is a smart person. There are many ways that a person can be smart. There are book smarts, but there are also other kinds of intellect such as being creative, emotionally intelligent, and more. Luna is definitely someone who has a lot of insight and intelligence. Even though she might believe in some weird things because of her father, she can also think for herself.

GRYFFINDOR: ALWAYS SUPPORTS HER FRIENDS WHEN THEY NEED IT MOST

This is another main reason why Luna would have made a great Gryffindor. While Ravenclaws can also be good friends, they seem a little more individually-focused. Gryffindors, on the other hand, are a little bit more community-minded and focused on others. Luna always comes to help her friends when she can. She does so by fighting alongside them, as well as providing emotional support, such as when she gives Harry support to cast his Patronus.

RAVENCLAW: DOESN’T CARE WHAT OTHER PEOPLE THINK OF HER

Since Gryffindors tend to be a little more extroverted and focused on others around them, as well as a bit prone to attention-seeking and recklessness, they do seem to care what people think about them. While Luna does care enough to want friends, she doesn’t really care if she’s perceived as weird. She has a lot more individuality and creativity than your average Gryffindor.
