Over the years, there has been much debate amongst Harry Potter fans over the sorting of Hermione Granger into the house of Gryffindor. Is it really a good fit for her? Ravenclaw is known for its clever, wise, and quick-witted witches and wizards. But while there are brave Ravenclaws in Harry Potter, the house of Gryffindor is known for its students who are courageous, brave, and chivalrous.

And although Hermione is definitely courageous and brave, she's also clever and wise. She has great wisdom, intellectual ability, and creativity. So, which house is she a better fit for? There's a strong case to be made that the Sorting Hat got it wrong...

Hermione's Love For Reading Comes In Handy

"I checked this out weeks ago for a bit of light reading."

Hermione studying with Harry and Ron in the library in Harry Potter

In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Hermione researched and brought over a several hundred-page book to Ron and Harry and referred to it as "a bit of light reading." One of the things that Ravenclaws love most is reading. As the smartest house at Hogwarts, they are known for their cleverness, which doesn't come from just anywhere; it comes from books.

The courageous and brave thing to do at this moment, if Hermione were a Gryffindor, would be to jump into the deep end without any research or prior knowledge. But what Hermione does instead is a bit of "light reading," (more commonly known as research). Hermione truly believes that a several hundred-page book is light reading, which not only means that she reads constantly, but it also means that she's probably read hundreds of books. Her passion for seeking knowledge to the ends of the earth is one of the reasons she's actually a Ravenclaw.

Hermione Explaining Her Relationship With Viktor Krum

"Viktor's more of a physical being... I just mean he's not particularly loquacious."

For unfamiliar with the term "loquacious," it's another word for talkative. What's most Ravenclaw about this quote is that Hermione could have said talkative, or a more everyday term for the benefit of Ron and Harry, whom she is talking to Viktor about.

But she instead uses a word they probably don't know, simply because she either doesn't realize everyone doesn't know that word or because she's purposefully being quick-witted and jumps at the opportunity to expand her friends' vocabulary.

Hermione Watching Harry Break The Rules

"What an idiot."

One of the most Ravenclaw things to come out of Hermione's mouth is calling the Chosen One an idiot. While Harry attempts to be brave while sticking up for Neville Longbottom, Hermione sits on the sidelines, offering her own opinion on his impulsive behavior.

Hermione believes she is smarter than Harry based on how he behaves. Harry's behavior is highly in keeping with his house, so if Hermione was a true Gryffindor, she would likely be cheering him on.

Hermione Introducing Herself

"Are you sure that's a real spell? Well, it's not very good, is it?"

One of the first things Hermione ever says to Harry and Ron is, "Are you sure that's a real spell? Well, it's not very good, is it?" She then proceeds to show how off much better she is at magic by fixing Harry's glasses.

While Gryffindors love a good competition, they're also much more about camaraderie and friendship than Ravenclaws. Gryffindor has many likable characters in Harry Potter, and even though Hermione becomes one of them, her words here are pure Ravenclaw snobbery.

Hermione Schooling Harry and Ron, Yet Again

"Honestly, don't you two read?"

Hermione Granger is full of hot burns for Harry and Ron over their ability, or lack thereof, to read books. Ravenclaw-in-disguise Hermione can't resist standing on her moral high ground and proving that she knows more than the boys with her words and her attitude.

But what truly makes Hermione a Ravenclaw is that beyond her showing off her intellectual superiority, she's is genuinely amazed that Harry and Ron don't have their noses in books every chance they get. She believes that everyone should be putting as much time and effort into studying as she does.

Hermione Is The Most Prepared Out of The Golden Trio

"Always the tone of surprise."

In Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part 1, Hermione surprises Harry and Ron by having their things packed for days, ready for a moment when Death Eaters would come after them. And lucky for them she did this because they have to make a quick getaway during Bill and Fleur's wedding at the Burrow.

Once the Golden Trio apparates to London, they are (temporarily) safe, and Hermione's Ravenclaw preparedness and ability to think four steps ahead proves to once again come in handy.

Hermione's Response to Umbridge's Teaching Style

"No need to think is more like it."

Throughout Harry Potter and The Order of Phoenix, Hermione is thoroughly not pleased with Professor Umbridge's teaching styles — she is in fact, one of the worst DADA teachers in Harry Potter. It's clear that out of everyone, Hermione isn't suffering the most from Umbridge's lack of teaching (since she does so much learning on her own time), but she still is the most annoyed.

When Umbridge tells the class there is no need to talk, Hermione responds under her breath with, "No need to think is more like it." Hermione believes she knows better than the teacher, and in this case, she does. Regardless of Umbridge's desire to stop the students from thinking for themselves, Hermione will keep thinking, and she will continue being the smartest person in the room, Ravenclaw or not.

Hermione Correcting Ron

"Stop, stop, stop! You're going to take someone's eye out. Besides, you're saying it wrong. It's leviosa, not leviosar!"

"It's leviosa, not leviosar," is one of Hermione's most iconic quotes. It proves Hermione is a Ravenclaw because rather than politely correcting Ron, she chooses to do in the most know-it-all way possible.

It's extremely Ravenclaw for Hermione to say this because, at this point in the series, she doesn't know Ron at all. However, she still feels that she can correct him in such a direct way without any repercussions because, after all, she is right. And she proves it by easily levitating her own feather.

Hermione Has Her Priorities Straight

"Now, if you two don't mind, I'm going to bed before either of you come up with another clever idea to get us killed or worse — expelled."

Hermione is known for putting her studies first, but she truly believes getting kicked out of school is fate worse than death. This is a moment when the Ravenclaw in her just comes bursting at the seams, and it's clear that there is no other house that she could possibly be in.

If she were a true Gryffindor, Hermione would put the mission of saving everyone first (a pillar of bravery). Still, instead, she puts her education and place at Hogwarts at the very top of her list of priorities.

Hermione Explains Who She Really Is

"Actually, I'm highly logical, which allows me to look past extraneous detail and perceive clearly that which others overlook."

In addition to being whip-smart, Hermione is extremely self-aware: "Actually, I'm highly logical, which allows me to look past extraneous detail and perceive clearly that which others overlook."

When it comes to saving the world, Hermione will always roll up her sleeves and fight the good fight, but she will do so in a logical way that makes sense. Unlike Harry and Ron, she won't dive into the deep end without any knowledge of what's going to happen. Ultimately, Hermione is a Ravenclaw because highly intellectual, wise beyond her years, and most of the time, she just knows what to do.
