Simu Liu, who portrays superhero martial artist Shang-Chi in the MCU, has questioned how Harry Potter’s Hagrid exists. Liu was shot to international recognition with the opening of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in 2021, an early Phase 4 film which received positive reviews. A sequel to the film, with Liu again in the leading role, has already been confirmed though without any dates for the beginning of production or its eventual release.

While Shang-Chi was greeted by audiences in 2021, the highly anticipated reunion Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, kicked off 2022 with a bang. The reunion streamed on HBO Max, and took a retrospective look at the Harry Potter film series, celebrating the 20th anniversary of its first film Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The event brought back many of the films’ most important actors, including the leading trio of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. The actors took the opportunity to discuss the series, their relationships with each other, the impact it had on their personal lives and careers, and to relive memorable moments.

Now, Simu Liu has taken to Twitter to ask an important, and slightly awkward, question about the series. The actor, who is well known for his love of films, asked “how does Hagrid exist [?]”. Before asking the question, which raised some eyebrows in his replies, Liu said that he was now “old enough” to wonder about the half-giant’s creation. Check out Liu’s post below:

Liu’s post raises a valid question and leaves Harry Potter fans scrabbling for an answer. In the Harry Potter canon, Hagrid, who is portrayed by Robbie Coltrane, has parents who are distinctly different from each other. The half-giant's father is a muggle man (who is described as short even among humans), while his mother was a giant; a species which are usually between 20 and 25 feet in height tall. It’s likely that, in canon, Hagrid’s mother could have been almost quadruple the height of his father, raising Liu’s pertinent question.

While series creator JK Rowling has a history of retrospectively adding detail to the Harry Potter universe, fans can probably expect Liu’s question to remain unanswered. However, it is possible audiences and Harry Potter fans learn more about giants, and their interactions with the wizarding world, in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, or in a future sequel. However, until then, fans will have to use their own imaginations to fill in the gaps about Hagrid, and the unlikely romance between his parents.
