Hagrid is one of the most interesting and good characters from the Harry Potter universe, but, while many fans love him, he doesn’t always get the recognition that he deserves. In many ways, he was the first mentor and parental figure that Harry could actually count on, and he was there to help Harry from the beginning.

Hagrid definitely didn't have an easy life, but he was an overall kind person with many positive characteristics. But, just like with all well-written characters, he also had his flaws.

Worst: Emotional

Being emotional isn’t always a bad thing as being in tune with emotions can lead to a lot of understanding of yourself and others around you.

However, being overemotional can lead you to act out irrationally and cause more harm than good. While Hagrid’s emotional nature had many positives, sometimes he reacted out of emotion but didn’t think about what he was doing. This would often happen when he was angry or trying to defend Dumbledore.

Best: Hard-working

Hagrid was the groundskeepers at Hogwarts for decades, and he had a lot of difficult work to do. It’s actually somewhat unfair that he was given this position seeing as how he wasn’t allowed to do magic, which also was entirely unfair, and it meant a lot of manual labor.

However, he did like his job and being able to live at Hogwarts, and he was always a hard-working and generous person.

Worst: Careless

Hagrid was very kind and caring, and he never really meant to hurt other people. However, he could be rather careless at times.

Sometimes his carelessness was more benign such as forgetting that he shouldn’t tell the trio about the Sorcerer’s Stone, but other times, it could be a bit more harmful such as when he brought his brother Grawp into the Forbidden Forest. Hagrid just didn’t always think things through.

Best: Generous

While Hagrid wasn’t always appreciated by everyone around him, those who did know him realized how likable and loveable he was. Hagrid might not have had much social standing in the wizarding world or much money, but he did share what he had with those he cared about.

Of all the adults in Harry’s life, Hagrid was the only one who really consistently provided support and a listening ear. Harry could always visit Hagrid’s hut for advice and a cup of tea and a dessert, even if it didn't taste that good.

Worst: Insecure

The wizarding world was full of prejudice and bigotry for certain groups of people, and they weren’t exactly kind to someone like Hagrid. Given the things Hagrid had gone through and the fact that he was half-giant, it makes sense that he had some insecurities.

However, he had nothing to be ashamed of as he was a wonderful individual.

Best: Determined

Hagrid and Buckbeak

There are many characters in Harry Potter that are well-known for being intelligent, such as Hermione and Dumbledore, but Hagrid isn’t one of these book smart characters.

However, this doesn’t mean he isn’t determined and capable in his own ways. Hagrid is quite smart when it comes to caring for magical creatures, and he’s determined to do the right thing. For example, he does everything he can to put together a case for Buckbeak.

Worst: Distant

Hagrid is really one of the best mentors that Harry ever has, so he feels much less distant to Harry than other adults such as Lupin or even the Weasley parents. However, he did still keep a lot of his life a secret from Harry.

Hagrid didn’t always want others to know about his past, so he wouldn’t necessarily share a lot about himself. This means he could seem a bit aloof at times.

Best: Caring

Hagrid is probably one of the most caring and compassionate characters from the series. Whether he’s looking out for magical creatures or helping watch out for Harry while he’s at Hogwarts, Hagrid does care a lot about others.

He might be part-giant, but he’s gentle and kind. His compassionate demeanor and generosity are some of his greatest strengths.

Worst: Dishonest

Of all Hagrid’s traits, his tendency to be dishonest is probably one of his worst.

He struggles with keeping secrets and being a bit sneaky, especially when it comes to acquiring dangerous creatures that are illegal to have, but on the other hand, he also isn’t great at keeping secrets. He can be a bit cagey about certain things, and he is also prone to spilling sensitive information.

Best: Loyal

While Hagrid’s house is never mentioned in the books, it’s not very surprising that he was a Gryffindor. While there are many traits of Hufflepuff house that Hagrid possesses, he’s also got many of the best Gryffindor traits such as loyalty and bravery. One of Hagrid’s best characteristics is how loyal he is to the people he cares about.

He always has Dumbledore’s back, and he also always does everything he can to help Harry.
