Harry Potter manages to get a surprising amount of teen romance in, given that he spends most of his school years battling the forces of evil. Whether it's his embarrassing non-starter of a romance with Cho, Romilda Vane, and her love-potion-laced chocolates, or his eventual love for Ginny, Harry has some kind of romance in most of the later movies - but Ginny is the one that lasts.

In the flash-forward to the train platform, Harry is shown with Ginny, married and with their own kids headed off to Hogwarts. But from an awkward crush to eventual 'true love', how did this relationship blossom over the course of the franchise - and when did Harry start to see her as more than just Ron's little sister?

The Philosopher's Stone - Ron's Little Sister

Harry and Ginny barely interact at all in the first movie, as Ginny isn't yet old enough to attend Hogwarts. She might get a mention or two as Ron's sibling, but that's about it, and at this point, there is no hint that the two are going to end up together (and, of course, they are both still extremely young children at this point in time!). Ginny does see Harry for the first time in this installment, though, as she is with her family at King's Cross when Molly helps Harry learn how to cross the barrier to the platform. And, like everyone else in the wizarding community, she is awed by everything she has heard about him.

The Chamber Of Secrets - Crushing On Harry

It's in The Chamber of Secrets that Ginny really becomes a character in the series - and one who clearly has a huge crush on Harry! She first officially meets him here, when he comes to the Burrow over the summer. When she does meet him, though, she gasps and runs out of the room, clearly overwhelmed by it all.

Later on, the version of Tom Riddle that lives in the diary reveals that Ginny was writing about Harry a lot, and how much she hoped he would notice her, and how much she liked him. Harry, of course, wants to keep her safe because he's the hero - but he really doesn't see her as more than his best friend's little sister at this point.

The Prisoner Of Azkaban - Just A Crush

In the third film, Ginny once more fades into the background - although she still clearly has a huge crush on Harry. In The Prisoner of Azkaban, the focus is really on Harry and Sirius, so Ginny only appears in a few scenes. She is still established to be awkward around Harry, though, because of her crush - and possibly more so because of everything that happened the year prior. In the books, she even makes him a singing get well card when he is injured... and unlike some other gifts, Harry doesn't throw it out, suggesting that maybe the smallest hint of feelings are starting to develop at this point in time.

The Goblet of Fire - Ginny Gets Over Harry

At this point in the franchise, Ginny gets some excellent advice from Hermione, and backs off a little bit. This actually helps her to start talking to Harry, and building a real friendship with him, instead of blushing and stuttering whenever he is around. She does clearly still have something of a thing for him, though, as shown by her visible disappointment when Ron suggests she go to the Yule Ball with Harry, and she reveals that she actually already has a date in Neville. Harry, however, is hung up on Cho Chang, even though she has started going out with Cedric Diggory. By the end of the book, Harry is busy mooning over Cho, and Ginny has started dating Michael Corner - and it seems as though these two may end up as just good friends.

The Order Of The Phoenix - Harry & Cho, Ginny & Michael

In The Order of the Pheonix, it seems that Harry and Ginny are nowhere near a path to true love, but they are definitely on the path to true friendship. With Harry and Cho starting to date (albeit with plenty of confusion), and Ginny and Michael an established pair, Harry and Ginny have the space to really start to become friends.

It is in The Order of the Pheonix that they really begin to interact and to have some conversations between just the two of them - and where Ginny starts to offer Harry advice, whether it is to reach out to Sirius, or on what it would feel like to be possessed. Her abilities in the DA, and their time together there also impresses Harry and deepens their friendship, so that by the end of the movie, when Harry and Cho and Michael and Ginny are over, there's space (maybe) for something new to grow.

The Half-Blood Prince - They Finally Get Together

After years of build-up, Harry finally starts to have feelings for Ginny in The Half Blood Prince - and one of the first moments he realizes it is when he smells Amortentia, and it smells like 'something flowery he had smelled at the Burrow'... Ginny's hair! She is dating Dean Thomas for a while at the start of the book, but that quickly ends - not before Harry realizes that he's incredibly jealous of Dean, though, and starts to think about what it would be like if he was Ginny's boyfriend, instead.

Finally, the two spontaneously kiss after a Quidditch game, and actually start to date - which Ron is surprisingly accepting of, given that he was incredibly unhappy about Ginny's past romances. This is the most that fans get to see of Harry and Ginny in a relationship, and it seems like a great one. However, Harry eventually ends things in order to protect Ginny, and she respects that decision.

The Deathly Hallows (Part 1) - The Breakup, And Harry Leaving

In the first of the two final films, Ginny once again largely disappears into the background, as the focus is on Harry, Ron, and Hermione, and their search for the Horcruxes. Ginny returns to Hogwarts for much of this year, without Harry, and he is left to listen for news of her on the radio, and to hope that she is ok. They do share one sweet moment at the start of the film, though, when they are all at the Burrow for Bill and Fleur's wedding, and share a kiss - and Ron warns Harry not to mess with Ginny's feelings. Beyond, this, though, their romance just isn't the focus.

The Deathly Hallows (Part 2) - Reunited At The Battle Of Hogwarts

In the final film, Harry and Ginny are reunited, and fans are treated to the particularly funny moment that Harry arrives at Hogwarts with Ron, and Ginny completely ignores her own brother - she's only got eyes for Harry! Later, as they are rushing through the castle during the Battle of Hogwarts, Harry grabs her hand, and the two share a brief kiss. There isn't much time for more, though, as they are in the middle of something a little more important! However, it's clear that they are in love by now.

And of course, in the final flash-forward, Harry and Ginny are (presumably) happily married, with their own children being sent off to school - hopefully for a less eventful few years!
