Summary

  • Newt Scamander's wand reflects his love for magical creatures and the environment, with a shell handle and worn-down ash tip.
  • Queenie Goldstein's wand is designed to match her personality, with an Art Deco-inspired shell design and dark rosewood material.
  • Gellert Grindelwald acquires the powerful Elder Wand, made of elder wood and Thestral hair, which can only be mastered by a wizard accepting death.

Over time, J K Rowling has revealed more details about the Harry Potter character wands and what they mean - including those of the Fantastic Beasts cast. Early on in the series, it's established that the wand chooses the wizard, and Harry finds this out firsthand in The Sorcerer's Stone when he goes to visit Ollivander's wand shop in Diagon Alley for the first time. In the wizarding world, wands are indispensable objects, used for everything from combat to household chores. Students learn how to wield these tools with finesse during their time at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, though some show more outright skill than others, leading to a few explosive moments, courtesy of one Seamus Finnegan.

Wand woods and cores in Harry Potter also carry their own distinctive meanings, as does length and flexibility. The Harry Potter character wands are chosen with the person's traits in mind, and the connection is repeatedly referenced in the series, especially when Ollivander is identifying wands. There are three main types of wand cores that Ollivander uses, and more than 30 types of wand woods are found in the Harry Potter universe, and while each aspect means something about the characters, not every detail is known about each wand.

21 Newt Scamander - Unknown Wood, Unknown Length, Unknown Core

Newt Scamander from Fantastic Beasts briefcase

Newt Scamander is the main character in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, although Dumbledore got a lot more screen time in the later movies. What makes Newt's wand different is that it ties into his love for the magical creatures of the Harry Potter world. According to the book, The Case of Beasts: Explore the Film Wizardry of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, head prop maker Pierre Bohana said the wand traces back to an animal component and its design shows his love for both animals and the environment.

The handle of Newt's wand is made of shell, but it is similar to a sandworm shell in feel and has a pearling effect. The tip of his wand is a piece of ash that is worn down. With Newt taking upon himself the responsibility of protecting the great beasts, having a wand based out of that world, while also remaining easy to use, made perfect sense for his character.

20 Queenie Goldstein - Unknown Wood, Unknown Length, Unknown Core

Queenie Goldstein smiling in Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them

Queenie Goldstein had her own wand, but it was an unknown length, with no word on the fictional wood or core material of the Harry Potter character wands. Queenie's wand first appeared in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and it was made to reflect Queenie's personality. Wand designer Molly Sole said the design was Art Deco-inspired and was supposed to be a "sexy" wand (via Wizarding World). The wand had a shell design similar to a piece of mother pearl while the wand itself was made out of dark rosewood.

There is also the chance that Queenie's wand was a Jonker wand, which means it would have Wampus cat hair at the core, but that was never clarified one way or the other in the movies. Her wand's elements remain unknown, but it sounds like it was designed to match her personality and little else.

19 Gellert Grindelwald - Unknown Wood, Unknown Length, Unknown Core

Grindelwald aiming his wand in Fantastic Beasts

The main antagonist of the Fantastic Beasts franchise was Gellert Grindelwald. While Johnny Depp played him in the first movie, Mads Mikkelsen played him in the sequels. This really changed his personality and what went into his wand. What is known is that Grindelwald acquired his wand before he started his education at Durmstrang Institute, and he used it throughout his school career and then as an adult when he began plotting his evil mission. However, Grindelwald eventually gave up his original wand after using it against Gregorovitch, and he then stole the Elder Wand.

With the Elder Wand, Grindelwald no longer had need of his old wand and it was never seen gain. As for the Elder Wand, it was one of three magical objects that made up the Deathly Hallows. This wand, made of elder wood, was the most powerful ever created and was capable of feats of magic no normal wand could ever accomplish. The core was the tail hair of a Thestral and only a wizard accepting death could ever master it.

18 Theseus Scamander - Unknown Wood, Unknown Length, Unknown Core

Newt and Theseus in Fantastic Beasts 3

Theseus Scamander was Newt's brother, and he was part of the Aurors in the Fantastic Beasts movies. It is not known when he obtained his Harry Potter character wands, but most likely it was before he began attending Hogwarts. There is a very strong chance that this is a Gervaise Ollivander-created wand. However, there is also the likely chance that he changed wands over time.

He was locked up in Erkstag and his wand was almost surely confiscated by German Aurors, so Theseus would have had to have gotten a new wand after that, as he had no way to really get his old one back. It is unknown what the changes in the new wand might have entailed and neither the movies nor the Wizarding World website revealed its length, design, or core.

17 Porpentina Goldstein - Unknown Wood, Unknown Length, Unknown Core

Tina Goldstein and Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts

Tina Goldstein first appeared in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them as one of the main protagonists and her wand was there from the start. The design of the wand was more of a hefty feel. This was because it matched up with Tina's personality and needed to be functional and understated. It was also comparable to her sister, Queenie, in that the wands matched their personalities. As an Aurur, this made her wand perfect for her job. It also had a simple, sleek design, making it look like this was actually a Thiago Quintana-created wand. There is no information on her wand's use and powers other than its functionality.

16 Cedric Diggory - 12 1/4th Inches, Ash, Unicorn Hair

Robert Pattinson as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter

Cedric Diggory was the captain of Hufflepuff's Quidditch team, but his only appearance took place in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Nevertheless, he seemed like an upstanding person and Hogwarts student. What fans do know about Cedric is his wand, since he had to provide it for certification during the Triwizard Tournament. It was 12 1/4 inches, made of Ash, and had a unicorn hair core. Its pleasantly springy feel was made for the seemingly chipper Diggory. What made his wand so special is that ash wands have one true master and lose their powers when changing owners. The unicorn hair makes it consistent concerning magical usage.

15 Viktor Krum - 10 1/4 Inches, Hornbeam, Dragon Heartstring

Viktor Krum under the Imperius Curse

First introduced in Goblet of Fire and then briefly popping up again in The Deathly Hallows book, Viktor Krum is a Bulgarian student from the Durmstrang Institute. He plays for the Bulgarian Quidditch team as a seeker, and famously caught the snitch during the Quidditch World Cup, though Ireland won the match. Viktor Krum's wand was revealed in Goblet of Fire when the Triwizard champion's wands were weighed.

Made by wandmaker Gergorovitch (a previous owner of the Elder Wand), Krum's wand is made of Hornbeam wood and boasts a dragon heartstring core, the length is 10 1/4 inches. The wand in question is described as being thicker than a usual wand and very rigid. The Hornbeam has the traits of conforming to its master, keeping its morals and principles, and also becoming difficult to use for anyone other than its specific owner. The Dragon Heartstring makes this a powerful wand as well, capable of great spells.

14 Fleur Delacour - 9 1/2 Inches, Rosewood, Veela Hair

Fleur Delacour in Harry Potter.

Introduced as a foreign student with a slight attitude, Fleur became a favorite character during the last two Harry Potter books. She started dating one of Ron's older brothers, Bill and eventually, the two were married. The couple also took Harry and his allies in when they were being hunted by Death Eaters. A far cry from where she started. Fleur's Harry Potter character wands do not match the person she became. It's made of Rosewood, is 9 1/2 inches long, and has a Veela hair core from her grandmother. This may be the reason why it's unflexible. The use of Rosewood wands remains mostly unknown in the Harry Potter world.

13 Gilderoy Lockhart - 9 Inches, Cherry, Dragon Heartstring

Gilderoy Lockhart in his office in Harry Potter.

Fans of the Harry Potter books and movies remember Gilderoy Lockhart as the good-looking wizard who couldn't produce a proper spell. No matter what he did, it always turned out bad for someone else. While at Hogwarts, he normally focused on Harry. To match his posh tastes, Gilderoy's Harry Potter character wands was deemed expensive. In addition, at nine inches, it was also smaller than most wands at Hogwarts. Made of Rosewood with a dragon heartstring, the wand was slightly bendy. Perfect for someone who needed to make excuses when spells didn't go his way.

Cherry was also very rare for wands in the Harry Potter world. It was popular in Japan, but it was mostly about prestige for the owners as an ornamental wand, which makes sense for someone like Lockhart who puts his status level above almost all else. According to J.K. Rowling (via Wizarding World), "If teamed with dragon heartstring, the wand ought never to be teamed with a wizard without exceptional self-control and strength of mind." This would explain Gilderoy's lack of control with his spells.

12 Peter Pettigrew - 9 1/4 Inches, Chestnut, Dragon Heartstring

Peter Pettigrew in Harry Potter.

An unfortunate entry into the roster of the Harry Potter character wands is that of Peter Pettigrew. Peter was an ugly man from the inside. He wanted to be wanted, so he cozied up to all the cool wizards. First, it was James Potter and his gang, later, it was the Death Eaters, and in the end, it led to his death. Not even the wands he acquired when Voldemort returned could help him. The Chestnut wand was slightly longer than nine inches and had a dragon heartstring. Despite the strong core, the wand was brittle. Rowling said that a Chestnut wand, when combined with a Dragon Heartstring core, often matches up with someone with a lack of scruples.

11 Remus Lupin - 10 1/4 Inches, Cypress, Unicorn Hair

Remus Lupin with the Marauders' Map in the Classroom in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Remus was a simple man who wanted to teach Hogwarts students how to defend themselves from the Dark Arts. Unfortunately, becoming a werewolf once a month prevented him from living a normal life. Still, he was an important part of Harry's life to the very end. From his time as a Hogwarts student, Remus owned a 10 1/4-inch Cypress wand with a unicorn hair core. Pliable and well-matched to its owner, the wand helped Remus during the Battle of Hogwarts. Though he perished, he went out a valiant hero, which fits the idea that Cypress wands often find those willing to self-sacrifice.

10 Ron Weasley - 14 Inches, Willow, Unicorn Hair

Ron Weasley with his broken wand.

Harry Potter's best friend, Ron, has a bit of a rough "spell" with his Harry Potter character wands, going through two during his time at Hogwarts. His first, a hand-me-down from his brother Charlie Weasley, was 12 inches long and was made of ash, with a unicorn hair core. Unfortunately for Ron, this wand was snapped in half during a run-in with the Whomping Willow. He attempted to fix it with Spello-Tape, but it was a lost cause, and he was forced to get a new one after multiple malfunctions caused him much grief and embarrassment.

Ron's second wand was his alone, purchased from Ollivander prior to his third year at Hogwarts. This model was 14 inches long, was made of willow (ironically), and also fashioned a unicorn hair core. His second wand suited him much better, as he used it in multiple conflicts, including in the battle in the Department of Mysteries Hall of Prophecy, and during the battle of the Astronomy Tower. Willow wands also have healing powers and match up well with wizards and witches who are insecure and need a boost.

9 Hermione Granger - 10 3/4 Inches, Vine, Dragon Heartstring

Hermione pointing her wand at Draco in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Fellow best friend of Harry Potter, Hermione is the brains of the trio. Her wand is 10 3/4ths inches long, made of vinewood, and possesses a dragon heartstring core. Dragon heartstring is material obtained from a dragon that is often used in the cores of Harry Potter character wands, though it is relatively unknown what parts of the dragon are used. Some think that it might be the dragon's heart that produces the aptly named "heartstring." Dragon wands will always bond strongly with their current owner.

Dragon heartstring produces the most powerful wands, and Hermione's is no exception. At the young age of 15, Hermione is able to produce a corporeal Patronus, which is a very advanced piece of magic and is a credit to the talents of both herself and her wand. For a time, Hermione uses the stolen wand of Bellatrix Lestrange after Hermione's is confiscated, but she is not a fan of the foreign object.

8 Neville Longbottom - Unknown Length, Cherry, Unicorn Hair

Neville and Harry Potter.

Neville Longbottom is another character who sported two different Harry Potter character wands during his time at Hogwarts. Similar to Ron, Neville wielded a hand-me-down to begin his time at school, although Neville's was his father's. The makeup and core of this wand are unknown, and it was eventually broken during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries.

Neville's second wand, and the first of his own, was made from cherry wood and featured a unicorn hair core. As with most witches and wizards, Neville Longbottom purchased this wand from Ollivander's, and it may have been one of the last wands that Garrick Ollivander sold, as he was kidnapped by death eaters the following day.

7 Professor McGonagall - 9 1/2 Inches, Fir, Dragon Heartstring

Minerva McGonagall in Harry Potter

This Hogwarts professor and Transfiguration teacher had one of the more powerful Harry Potter character wands. Minerva McGonagall's wand is 9 1/2 inches long, was made of fir, and also fashioned with a dragon heartstring core. Wands fashioned with the wood of firs were known to be resilient, like their masters, and were dubbed the "survivors" wands. McGonagall's particular model was well suited for transfiguration, making it the perfect companion for her, an animagus. Much like Professor Minerva McGonagall herself, her wand is elegant, refined, and extremely powerful.

6 Draco Malfoy - 10 Inches, Hawthorn, Unicorn Hair

Draco Malfoy holding his wand in Harry Potter.

Draco Malfoy, the famed rival of Harry Potter, and the pure-blooded son of a Death Eater sported a 10-inch wand that was made of hawthorn wood and a unicorn hair core. Harry Potter character wands made with cores of unicorn hair are known to produce the most consistent magic and are the most faithful of wands. Although, they are not known to be the most powerful wands, especially when compared to those with dragon heartstring cores. Garrick Ollivander described Draco's wand as "reasonably pliant," an allusion to the complexities of his character.

Draco also unknowingly held the allegiance of the Elder Wand, after disarming Dumbledore in the Astronomy Tower. Though Malfoy did not ever end up wielding the Elder Wand, its allegiance to him became consequential, as Voldemort was not ever able to tap into the wand's full potential.

5 Bellatrix Lestrange - 12 3/4 Inches, Walnut, Dragon Heartstring

Bellatrix arrives with other death eaters in Harry Potter

A rather unsavory entry to the roster of Harry Potter character wands, the wizarding world's favorite "bad girl," Bellatrix Lestrange, was Voldemort's right-hand (and apparently mother to his child). Lestrange's was 12 3/4 inches long, made of walnut, and contained a dragon heartstring core. Ollivander described this wand as "unyielding," also a very telling characteristic of the owner. Legend has it there was a European superstition warning not to grow anything near a walnut tree because it contained evil or poison - a significant factor in the walnut-wood-based wand of Bellatrix.

Bellatrix used her wand from the age of 11, both before and after her imprisonment in Azkaban, using it for a wide range of treacherous acts; including torturing Neville Longbottom's parents and killing her cousin, Sirius Black. It was eventually stolen by the golden trio and subsequently used by Hermione as a fill-in for her own.

4 Professor Snape - Unknown Length, Wood, and Core

Alan Rickman as Severus Snape Using His Wand in the Potions Classroom

Surprisingly, this entry on the list of Harry Potter character wands was difficult to discern. Although there is no canon wand makeup for one of the favorite Hogwarts professors, fans are free to speculate based on Severus Snape's personal characteristics. It is very likely that Snape's wand would feature the core of a unicorn hair, as these wands are the most difficult to turn to the dark arts, as unicorns themselves are the purest of creatures in Harry Potter lore.

Snape joined Voldemort's cause, before ultimately turning away from the darkness after Lily was killed. Harry Potter character wands with these cores are also the most faithful of wands, paralleling Snape's faithfulness to Lily, Dumbledore, and eventually Harry. Whatever wood Snape's wand was made of, it would likely be a rigid and hard design. Similar to the Bellatrix wand description as "unyielding," Snape's would also be so, albeit for less nefarious reasons.

3 Albus Dumbledore - 15 Inches, Elder, Thestral Tail Hair

Dumbledore extracts his memories with the Elder Wand in Harry Potter

The build of Dumbledore's original wand on the roster of wands of Harry Potter characters is also unknown, but for the majority of the time he is seen during the Harry Potter franchise, Dumbledore wielded the Elder Wand. The most powerful wand ever created, the Elder Wand is one of three objects that make up the Deathly Hallows; which also include the Cloak of Invisibility and the Resurrection Stone.

Created by Death himself, the Elder Wand was 15 inches long, made from elder wood, and contained the core of a Thestral tail hair. This core makes it an even more special wand to wield successfully, as only someone who has accepted "death" can even see a Thestral hair, very few wizards can possess the Elder Wand. Prior to Dumbledore's ownership of it, the Elder Wand was famously in the possession of Gellert Grindelwald. After Dumbledore's death, it fell into the hands of Voldemort.

2 Tom Riddle (Voldemort) - 13 1/2 Inches, Yew, Phoenix Feather

Young Tom Riddle holding out his hand in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Before his ultimately unsuccessful attempt to control the Elder Wand, Tom Riddle held a very special wand on the list of Harry Potter character wands. At 13 1/2 inches long, Riddle's original wand was made with a phoenix feather core. Wands made with cores of phoenix feathers are one of the most supreme of breeds, as it is extremely rare, and produces wands with the greatest power range, with allegiances that are very hard won.

Phoenixes themselves are very independent and detached from the world. It is believed that this feature is what makes wands fashioned with their feathers so hard to tame, and the pickiest of wands in selecting potential owners. As rare as the bird and the wand, as is the master; and Tom Riddle was a rare breed. Ultimately becoming one of the most powerful wizards of all time, nearly taking over the entire world (twice), Tom was certainly worthy of being chosen by such a wand.
