While it would be hard to say that Harry Potter is not brave, having gone through seven books and eight movies sacrificing his own life and safety for others and in order to defeat Voldemort, his bravery often caused him to act in foolish ways. Whether this meant acting like he had to do everything on his own or rushing to the Ministry of Magic to save Sirius from Voldemort (even though he wasn't actually there), Harry's foolishness thankfully did not out way his bravery.

Nevertheless, these actions often went side by side and left our hero in a pinch, often needing the help of others to get him out. Without further delay, here are five of Harry Potter's bravest moments and five of his most foolish that audiences saw in the movies.

BRAVEST: Going Into The Chamber Of Secrets

Being a member Gryffindor, we all know Harry Potter fits really well in the house for the bravest witches and wizards - despite the possibility that he could have been placed in Slytherin by the Sorting Hat. After all, he's proven his bravery and determination countless times. Case in point, his journey into the Chamber of Secrets.

Despite the presence of both Voldemort and the Basilisk, Harry raced down Hogwarts' underground caverns to save Ginny. When he does, with the help of Fawkes, he's able to destroy the diary that houses Tom Riddle's essence that was also a Horcrux - something no one realized at the time, though this knowledge would play a major role in the series' conclusion.

MOST FOOLISH: Acting Like He Had To Do Everything On His Own

Even though so many people - particularly Dumbledore, Hermione, Ron, Lupin, the Weasleys, Sirius, McGonagall, and even Snape -helped him throughout the books and movies, Harry always acted as though he had to be the one to risk his life and save the day.

However, without the help of his friends and his mentors, Harry wouldn't have succeeded in getting through the Triwizard Tournament, he wouldn't have found the Horcruxes or defeated Voldemort, he wouldn't even have passed his exams if it wasn't for Hermione. And that's just to name a few of his many accomplishments that he would have never pulled off alone.

BRAVEST: Facing Voldemort When He Knew He Could Die

The famous prophecy states that "Neither can live while the other survives." Harry believed that he was the only one who could kill Lord Voldemort but even so, he gives himself up to the Dark Wizard when he demands his life in exchange for the people fighting on the side of Hogwarts.

In doing so, he doesn't just save his friends but discovers that he is one of the Horcruxes, which he didn't realize until he "died" and visited Dumbledore in the afterlife. Having not known that there was a chance that he could live, Harry still willingly gave himself up to save his friends.

MOST FOOLISH: Using Sectumsempra Without Knowing What It Did

For most of The Half-Blood Prince, Harry uses a potion book that seemed to have been own by the Half-Blood prince, with changes to the potions' recipes written in the margins. After Harry uses the suggestions in the book to successfully make the Draught of Living Death, he starts using the book to make all of his potions, not thinking about the consequences despite Hermione warning him about the unknown nature of the recipes and spells.

When fighting Draco, Harry uses the Sectumsempra Curse and injures him quite severely. Luckily, Snape knew how to reverse the spell since he was the Half-Blood Prince, though Harry didn't realize it at the time.

BRAVEST: Warning Hermione About the Troll

In The Sorcerers' Stone (or The Philosopher's Stone in the UK), there is a troll that is let loose through the Hogwarts castle and Professor Quirrell runs into the Great Hall to warn everyone.

Knowing that Hermione was not in the Great Hall, Ron and Harry went to try and find her to warn her about the troll. They heard her scream in the girl's washroom and ran in to find her. The boys didn't stop at that; in fact, both of them bravely fought a troll that was nearly ten times their size just to save Hermione.

MOST FOOLISH: Not Taking Snape's Occlumency Lessons Seriously

Snape in Occlumency Lessons

Because of his grudge against Snape, Harry didn't take his Occlumency lessons seriously - even though Dumbledore had told him it was important for him to practice the skill to protect himself. Though part of the problem was that Dumbledore should have realized Harry wouldn't take the lessons seriously if they were taught by Snape, Harry was also old enough to understand the seriousness of what he was being told to do.

Despite Snape's many attempts, Harry did not even try... except for the one time he accidentally got to see what was going on in Snape's head, much to the professor's understandable disgust.

BRAVEST: Searching For The Horcruxes

One of the bravest things Harry did was head out to try and look for the Horcruxes. Of course, he knew it wasn't going to be easy.

Harry had to force-feed Dumbledore water in the seaside cave where he had hurt two children when he was in the orphanage just to acquire the hidden Slytherin's locket, a Horcrux. After this, a very traumatic event, it's surprising that Harry still felt brave enough to try and find the rest of the lockets. Though his actions might seem foolhardy and needlessly dangerous, Harry's bravery allowed him to save the Wizarding World, with the help of his friends.

MOST FOOLISH: Going Into The Ministry Of Magic Because He Thought Sirius Was Captured By Voldemort

Because Harry didn't take his Occlumency lessons seriously, Voldemort was able to get into his brain and show him the images he wanted to during The Order of the Phoenix. Because Harry often doesn't think before he acts, he rushed to the Ministry without consulting anyone who might know what's up with Sirius.

As a result, Sirius and the rest of the Order go the Ministry to save Harry, and Sirius is killed in the crossfire. While we don't blame Harry for the death of his godfather, it's hard to deny that this is an indirect result of his habit of not thinking before he leaps.

BRAVEST: Secretly Training Dumbledore's Army

Harry teaches Ron, Cho, and Neville in Dumbledore's Army

After Dolores Umbridge took over the Defense Against the Dark Arts class, she refuses to teach the students anything other than textbook theory. As such, Harry, Hermione, and Ron decide they need to do something about it, teach the other students. Hermione convinces Harry that he should teach them since he's faced Voldemort multiple times in the past.

While Harry wasn't sure that they would be able to convince the other students to join Dumbledore's Army, Hermione was less dissuaded. Many students join the DA and Harry starts teaching, even though Umbridge is already torturing him and is always watching him. An act of true bravery!

MOST FOOLISH: Stealing The Flying Car

Instead of waiting for Ron's parents and asking them for help at Platform 9 3/4 when they weren't able to enter to catch the train to Hogwarts, Harry and Ron decided to steal Ron's parents' car and try to fly to Hogwarts in The Chamber of Secrets.

Clearly, this was a bad plan when the car kept losing its invisibility abilities and many Muggles saw the car, "seen by no less than seven Muggles" according to Snape when they arrived at Hogwarts. The car also broke down when they crashed into the Whomping Willow and then, after having unloaded everything and everyone in it, it drove off into the Forbidden Forest. The boys, of course, got detention. The car, on the other hand, never recovered.
