The Harry Potter movie series features a number of strong friendships, with the Golden Trio's bond being central to the story. That being said, one of the most powerful yet understated friendships isn't introduced until the latter half of the series when Luna and Harry bond over their shared trauma.

Much like Harry, Luna has experienced tragedy and both characters have felt like outsiders during their time at Hogwarts. Luna is able to see past Harry's label as 'the Chosen One' and he is able to see beyond her eccentric personality and the judgment she faces from other students.

"You're Not Going Mad. I Can See Them Too."

Although they are practically strangers at this point, fans thought it was quite sweet that Luna decided to comfort Harry, recognizing a similar pain within him. While Harry does look a little uneasy after she refuses to divulge any further on the matter, there is a small part of him that does feel relieved that she also sees the creatures as well.

"We Both Believe You By The Way."

When Luna does finally explain the Thestrals, she further tries to reassure Harry. Many people at Hogwarts doubt Harry's story about Cedric's death and Voldemort's return due to the Ministry's cover-up. However, without prompt, Luna lets Harry know that both she and her father support him and believe him.

Although she doesn't let it get to her, Luna knows how it feels to be isolated as she is often belittled by other students. Here, she goes out of her way to make Harry feel supported at one of his loneliest times. It's something that he greatly appreciates as time goes on since Luna proves that he is someone she can rely on.

Luna is one of Harry's most loyal friends and she subtly defends him on several occasions. When Harry and his friends decide ton start up Dumbledore's Army, several of his classmates doubt his leadership. During the group's initial meeting, Harry's doubts come to the surface and he considers giving up on the idea altogether until Luna breaks the tension.

For fans, this is certainly one of the more underrated moments as she not only helps keep the conversation going, but she is also able to quietly encourage Harry to not give up the fight just yet. She also proves to be instrumental in helping him gain back the friends he had lost - uniting all the students once more.

"I'm Sorry About Your Godfather, Harry."

At the end of the fifth movie, Harry comes across Luna trying to find her missing belongings. Despite the other students playing cruel pranks on her, she takes it in good spirits and honorably chooses to see it as harmless fun. Prior to this, Harry and Luna have already bonded due to their share loss and she offers him comfort in the wake of Sirius' death.

Harry seems taken aback by Luna's kindness; after his parents' deaths he was placed with the Dursleys and after Cedric's death he was isolated and mocked by the other students at Hogwarts. While most people would have avoided the topic altogether, Luna shows Harry that she understands his pain and is there for him when he needs her.

"I Am Your Friend, Luna."

In the sixth movie, Harry is attacked by Draco on the Hogwarts Express and left under his Invisibility Cloak. However, Luna comes to his rescue and is able to get him off the train before it departs again.

Luna is one of the bravest Ravenclaws in the Harry Potter series, which is shown in this scene when she stays behind to help Harry. She later remarks that the experience was like being with a friend, which surprises Harry as he has formed a close bond with Luna since their initial meeting. As she has often been isolated by her peers, Luna is unable to see that her admiration of Harry is entirely reciprocated.

"Exceptionally Ordinary."

After finding Harry on the train, he and Luna head back to the school. She then offers to fix Harry's broken nose which he reluctantly agrees to. After she successfully fixes his nose, she assures him that he looks 'exceptionally ordinary' which perfectly reflects the dynamic of their relationship.

Harry is used to being gossiped about and treated differently at Hogwarts due to being a famous figure in the Wizarding World. Refreshingly, Luna treats him like an ordinary person, even after his nose has just been broken.

"I'll Ask Someone I Like, Someone Cool."

Harry To Hermione In Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix

Harry and Hermione's friendship is one of the best in the Harry Potter series (as shown when she warns him about Romilda Vane's crush during the sixth movie). While Harry is flattered by the attention, he tells Hermione he'll ask someone he likes to Slughorn's party. Although the cut to Luna is played for comedy, it's clear that Harry is being honest in his assessment.

Many of his fellow students would be happy to accompany him to the party but he decides to ask Luna. In many ways, they are both outsiders and despite their differences, they have a strong understanding due to their shared experiences.

Harry is used to living his life under the spotlight and a lot of his past is common knowledge within the Wizarding World. As a result, Harry is often a hot topic of discussion at Hogwarts. That being said, Luna respects Harry's privacy and seemingly understands his boundaries much more than many others.

When Luna, Harry and the others are taken to Malfoy Manor, Dobby comes to their rescue. However, during the group's escape, Dobby is hit by Bellatrix's knife and dies as a result of his injuries.

Even though Hermione and Ron are present in this scene, it is Luna who sits beside Harry as he cradles Dobby's body. She closes the House-elf's eyes and tells Harry that he could sleeping (which is the perfect example of why she is one of the kindest characters in the series). It is telling that Luna is the one who stands by Harry and knows exactly what to say to him.

Luna is normally calm and non-confrontational, but she's not afraid to stand up to Harry she needs to. When he returns to Hogwarts in the final movie, Luna suggests Ravenclaw's lost diadem may be one of the Horcruxes Harry is looking for. In typical style for Harry, he goes ahead and tries to find the diadem himself and refuses to listen to Luna's advice.

Realizing that he needs to speak to the Grey Lady, Luna snaps at Harry to make him listen which visibly shocks him. Luna and Harry are close enough friends that she is prepared to challenge him.
