The Order of the Phoenix sees Harry really come into his own, and the battle against Voldemort begin in earnest - and it introduces easily the most hated villain of the entire franchise: Dolores Umbridge. It may be surprising, then, that with so many dark figures and battles, as well as the death of Sirius and the wizarding world turning against Harry, that there are still so many charmingly magical moments.

However, as with every Harry Potter film, there is space for the characters to explore and discover new corners of the magical world, and to have moments that elevate their lives in a positive way.

12 Grimmauld Place

12 Grimmauld Place from the outside

After spending some of the summer at the Dursleys, Harry is escorted to a new (and soon to be extremely important) magical location: 12 Grimmauld Place. The London townhouse is also the home of Sirius Black, and it includes many magical moments (even if some of the ones in the book, like the clean up, are omitted from the film). Harry's moments with Sirius pack an emotional punch, while the vision of the house appearing from between those on either side is the kind of magic that Harry Potter is known for.

Welcome To The Ministry Of Magic

The Ministry Of Magic in Harry Potter

The second major magical location that appears in The Order of the Phoenix is the Ministry of Magic itself. The moment that Harry first arrives is almost as impressive as his arrival at Hogwarts in the first film - although less so, as he is intimidated, rather than excited, and worried about his hearing. Still, the cavernous entry hall, the golden statue, the fireplaces lining the walls, and the bustle of so many witches and wizards are all stunning.

Dumbledore's Defense

When Harry is taken to his hearing (after producing a Patronus in front of Dudley), it seems that things are going against him - there is a full court, and he is not being listened to.

However, the appearance of Dumbledore, and his rapid-fire and incredibly quick-witted defense, are a truly magical moment - and one of relief! It's a shame that he doesn't produce an armchair to sit on as he does in the books, but that doesn't mean it's not an immensely satisfying scene.

Saving Professor Trelawney

McGonagall saves Trelawney from Umbridge in Harry Potter

After Umbridge arrives at Hogwarts, she is ready to fire whoever she deems unfit - and the first teacher to get in her way is Professor Trelawney. The scene where she is being thrown out of the school, while she sobs and begs, is absolutely heartbreaking (and cements Umbridge as a true villain). So when Dumbledore sweeps down to remind Umbridge that while she can fire people, she cannot evict them, it immediately changes the energy from sadness to triumph. No spells are used, but it is a magical moment nonetheless.

The Room Of Requirement & The DA

The Room of Requirement has appeared before, but it's only in this film that it really shines, as a space for Harry's new group (the DA) to form and learn. The scenes here are magical on essentially every level - from the students watching their patronuses frolic around their wand tips to seeing Harry step up as a teacher and gain confidence (and kiss Cho for the first time), this is a respite from the darkness of the rest of the film. Seeing Neville and Harry looking at the photo of their parents also adds depth to both Neville's character and their friendship.

Luna & The Thestrals

Harry Potter, Luna Lovegood, and a thestral

Luna makes her first appearance in The Order of the Phoenix and quickly becomes a fan favorite for her gentleness and quirkiness. She also introduces fans (and Harry) to the Thestrals, the new magical beasts of this film. While they make look frightening, these winged death-omens and their invisibility is a new level of magic for creatures in this franchise, and Luna and Harry's connection over witnessing death is a beautiful moment for both characters.

Christmas At Grimmauld Place

Arthur and Molly toasting to Harry in Harry Potter

Christmas is usually a big deal in the Harry Potter films, but this year it is a much more subdued affair. However, there is still real magic here, even if it is at Grimmauld Place, with Arthur Weasley recovering from his brush with death.

There is still an air of holiday magic, and more than that, it feels like the first time that Harry has really experienced a family Christmas in the wizarding world, and there is magic to that, too.

Fred & George Quit Hogwarts

Fred and George Weasley use fireworks to leave Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Fred and George can always be counted on to bring brightness and levity to a Harry Potter movie, and here, they do so in a truly spectacular way. The pair quit Hogwarts in order to go open a joke shop, but they decide to go out with a literal bang - riding their brooms through the corridors of Hogwarts, setting of magical fireworks that culminate in a massive firey dragon. This is one of the most colorful scenes in the movie, and one that reminds fans of the joy that can be found in spellwork, as well as its power to fight evil.

Dumbledore & Voldemort Duel

Dumbledore vs. Voldemort in the Ministry of Magic in Harry Potter and The Order Of The Phoenix

The scenes at the Ministry of Magic are not the most 'magical' in the sense of being charming fantasy pieces - at every turn, there are Death Eaters, danger, fear, and of course, Sirius loses his life in this battle. However, there is definite magic to the final duel between Dumbledore and Voldemort, as fans get to see Dumbledore's real power for the first time, and feel rising hope as he steps up to fight. It's an incredible moment, and one that comes with great relief, too.

Something Worth Fighting For

Despite everything that has been lost in this film, and Harry's realization that he will not survive this war, the end is a positive one. Harry and his friends are heading back to the Hogwarts Express, when he tells Hermione and Ron about what they have that Voldemort doesn't - something worth fighting for. It's a moment of true hope, and an inspiring one to end on.
