The Deathly Hallows Part 1 may be the darkest of all the Harry Potter movies. It is the first that doesn't take place at Hogwarts, the first without Dumbledore, and one that ends with tragic death and not much hope. Despite all this gloom and misery while the Golden Trio hunt Horcruxes, though, there are still some moments of pure magic to enjoy.

Unlike the earlier films, these are moments that are often still emotional, difficult, or that are short-lived, rather than extended wonder and joyful magical scenes. Still, it wouldn't be a Harry Potter movie without these shots of wholesome magical goodness.

The Transformation & Battle Of The Seven Potters

The Order Of The Phoenix as Harry potter

The opening scenes of the movie are not cheerful, as the Durselys leave their home for good and go on the run, and Harry waits to leave the place he grew up (however unhappily) for the last time. Despite the sadness, there is still a lot of magic to the scenes where Harry is surrounded by the Order and his friends, and as they add a little humor when transforming into 'Harry' using polyjuice potion. In addition, seeing Hagrid roar off into the sky with Harry, just as he dropped him off as a baby, is beautiful.

Bill & Fleur's Wedding

Even in the face of Death Eaters and a world at war, there's something beautiful and magical about a wedding. And this wedding takes that to the next level, as there is literal magic at work, here. While not all of the magical details make it in from the books, the romance and happiness in this scene is all that is really needed. And while it ends with a shift in tone, as the Death Eaters are about to attack, the fact that this is announced through a patronus is an important moment that expands that magic (which will be important later on!).

Hermione's Extendable Charm Bag

Hermione, always the forward-thinker, ends unpacking everything that the Trio will need ahead of time - including a tent - in her tiny handbag.

She manages this with the use of an Undetectable Extension Charm, which is a truly impressive bit of magic, and one that every fan wishes they could perform themselves. Seeing the bag come into play, and realizing what Hermione has done to be able to help her friends, is incredible on multiple levels.

Harry & Hermione Dance Together

The Golden Trio have what may be their biggest fight yet in this film, as Ron ends up getting frustrated with their lack of progress (exacerbated by wearing the Horcrux for too long) and storms off, leaving his friends behind. With this, their inability to return to Grimmauld Place, their inability to destroy the Horcrux, and no idea where to go next, this should be a purely dark time. However, there is a moment where Harry and Hermione dance together in the tent, and the mood lifts. While there is never any romantic connection between the two, the strength of their friendship - and their ability to find happiness together - is beautiful to watch.

The Tale Of The Three Brothers

Still from the Tale of Three Brothers

As Mr. Lovegood tells the story of the Deathly Hallows, the film cuts away from the live action scene, and shifts to a beautiful and eerie animation of the tale. The story itself is one of true, deep magic, but the decision to animate it like this, rather than simply listen to it, was a stunning one. And of course, there will always be magic to hearing a child's story, and that's exactly what this is.

Christmas Eve At Godric's Hollow

Most of the Harry Potter movies include a Christmas scene - and they get darker as time goes by. The Deathly Hallows Part 1 has potentially the darkest scene yet, but there is still magic in seeing Harry and Hermione arrive at Godric's Hollow - the first time that Harry has been back - on Christmas eve. While watching Harry at his parents' grave is sad, it's also poignantly lovely, especially with Hermione at his side and the snow softly falling.

The Patronus & The Sword

One of the most hopeful moments in the film comes when Harry is sitting guard outside the tent, and sees a doe patronus - that leads him to the Sword of Gryffindor, one of the few things that can destroy a Horcrux.

There's real magic to watching the silver doe gently stepping through the trees, and finding the sword underwater feels like the stuff of high fantasy and legend.

Ron's Return

As soon as Harry has found the sword, he finds something else that he needs - Ron, who rejoins Harry and Hermione from this point. Not only does he save Harry's life, but he is able to destroy a horcrux, face some of his darkest fears, and reunite with his friends. On a magical and emotional level, this is a fantastic scene, not least because it's the first time fans see a Horcrux being destroyed where they know what it is. When Tom Riddle's diary was destroyed, fans had no idea how important it was, and didn't get to see Dumbledore destroy the ring.

The Eye In The Mirror

After the Golden Trio are captured, things seem hopeless, although a briefly magical moment passes when Draco refuses to confirm whether or not the boy brought in is, in fact, Harry. However, a more magical moment is when Harry is in the dungeon, and sees the flash of an eye in the piece of mirror that he keeps. Of course, he thinks that it may somehow be Dumbledore, but fans know that it is Aberforth. Still, the moment of hope, and of a magical item in a dark place, is enough.

Dobby Saves The Day

Dobby's death in Harry Potter's arms

Dobby makes his final appearance at the end of this film, as he apparates into Malfoy manor to save the day. This is a magical scene on every level. On a literal one, magic does save the day - Dobby's particular brand of magic, that allows him to do what no wizard could in this situation. On an emotional level, though, it is far more significant. Watching Dobby's loyalty for Harry, seeing how their relationship has evolved far beyond his first appearance, and finally, seeing his death, is a beautiful (if heartbreaking) end to the film.
