Harold and Kumar are back for a third adventure, and this time the trees they're lighting up are Christmas ones. And they're doing it all up in your face.
The trailer for A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas is out, and it features the titular stoner duo (played by Kal Penn and John Cho) up to their usual antics, with Neil Patrick Harris in tow, raising hell as...Neil Patrick Harris.
But is Harold & Kumar-brand comedy a match for holiday themes, let alone 3D? Such is the challenge facing this threequel.
Before we get into the trailer, check out the synopsis for the film:
Six years after their Guantanamo Bay adventure, stoner buds Harold Lee and Kumar Patel cause a holiday fracas by inadvertently burning down Harold's father-in-law's prize Christmas tree.
Basically the same kind of broad setup for episodic misadventure that we've seen in every one of these films. By now you know if you like it or not. I'm personally a fan of the second film, and though the writers of the series (Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg) are penning this third film as well, it's questionable whether or not it was a good idea passing off directing duties to someone else (TV and short film director Todd Strauss-Schulson).

So yes, they poke fun and get meta with the fact that this movie is sporting some ridiculous 3D, but does that make the 3D look enjoyable, or is it just as off-putting? You decide.
For my part, the film looks really off in its digital format. To crisp, too hollow - it's almost as if Michael Mann made a Harold & Kumar 3D movie. Still though - Neil Patrick Harris is back, and better than ever. So that's something.
As always with this type of film, it might be best to wait until a red-band trailer hits before proclaiming final judgment. The second film was ridiculously (and hilariously) raunchy, and this trailer does tease some pretty messed up stuff that could potentially go down in the movie. Things could get weird.
A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas will be in theaters on November 4, 2011.
