With the spooky season upon us, it appears Harley Quinn and Spider-Man are the most popular 2021 Halloween costumes. Harleen Quinzel has been a fan-favorite ever since her debut in Batman: The Animated Series episode, “Joker’s Favor,” in 1992. Her popularity intensified following her DC Extended Universe depiction in Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey (2020), and, more recently, James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, which has only stoked the flames of adoration. Peter Parker/Spider-Man has been one of Marvel’s most popular characters since the 1960s and a cornerstone of superhero cinema ever since Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy.

Margot Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn in The Suicide Squad is perhaps the most faithful to the source material, wearing a red leather ensemble and pageant dress reminiscent of outfits the character wore in the Arkham video games and the animated series. On the Marvel Cinematic Universe side of things, Spider-Man: No Way Home is shaping up to be the most anticipated film since Avengers: Endgame. In addition to the return of Spider-Man 2’s Doc Ock (Alfred Molina) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s Electro (Jamie Foxx), Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men are rumored to be joining Tom Holland in a multiversal extravaganza paying homage past Sony films.

It’s no surprise that superhero costumes are the top choice for 2021. Not only has dressing up as one’s favorite superhero always been a popular choice for Halloween lovers, but Marvel and DC projects continue to permeated popular culture on screens big and small. Female-led superhero films such as Wonder Woman 1984 and Black Widow, which was Scarlett Johanson’s final outing as the character, have also contributed to the above numbers. All of that said, some might find it surprising that Harry PotterStar Wars’ Princess Leia, and “Cat” costumes continue to play so strong.

It’s always a lot of fun to see just which films and popular characters have resonated with the masses throughout the year to the point where they do their best to imitate and impersonate. For Harley Quinn, costumes can be as simple as a red dress, eye and face makeup and they’re all set to dance around with a javelin all night. As seen in the comics, animations, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and other Sony films, there are a wide variety of suits to choose from. Suffice to say, when Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters in December, there should be even more.
