The Suicide Squad director and Peacemaker showrunner James Gunn has responded to fans' calls for more projects featuring Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. Gunn worked alongside Robbie on his 2021 sequel to 2016's Suicide Squad. Robbie has starred as the DC comics anti-heroine in three feature films set in the DC Extended Universe.

Making her debut in David Ayer's Suicide Squad, Robbie's Dr. Harleen Quinzel was manipulated by the Joker (Jared Leto) into being his accomplice, helping free him from Arkham Asylum and joining him in a life of crime. After being inducted into Amanda Waller's (Viola Davis) Task Force X and going on a personal journey of breaking away from the Joker with the help of the Birds of Prey, Robbie's Harley Quinn last appeared in 2021's The Suicide Squad, where she helped take on a secret extraterrestrial threat in the nation of Corto Maltese in Gunn's DC debut. While Gunn is working on multiple DC projects, there has yet to be confirmation on whether Robbie's take on the character may return, but the director has recently responded to fan calls for future appearances.

On his personal Twitter account where the director regularly interacts with fans, Gunn responded to a fan's reply to a recent BTS shot that he shared of Robbie from The Suicide Squad. In their reply, the fan shared a photo of the director and Robbie hugging at the premiere of the 2021 movie, asking Gunn to bring Harley back in one of his future productions. Quote-tweeting the fan's reply, Gunn stated that it wouldn't be a bad idea to bring Robbie's Quinn back, supporting the fan's request. Check out Gunn's response below.

Despite being positively received upon its release, Gunn recently dampened hopes for a sequel to The Suicide Squad featuring Harley and the rest of his line-up of characters in an interview in June 2022, where Gunn stated Suicide Squad 3 was not in development. In the interview, the director admitted that while there had been some discussions about a sequel, he was currently too preoccupied with television projects such as Peacemaker season 2 to work on the feature. Gunn also revealed that due to his pleasant experience working on Peacemaker, he hoped to continue working on television projects for the foreseeable future.

Robbie's portrayal of Harley Quinn has been praised as one of the best characters within the DCEU, with her consistent growth being seen across her three film appearances, as Quinn quickly killed Juan Diego Botto's Corto Maltese dictator Silvio Luna upon noticing signs that reminded him of the cruel Clown Prince of Crime. While a sequel to The Suicide Squad isn't currently in development, Gunn has teased more DCEU cameos in Peacemaker season 2, showing that the director is interested in returning to exploring other DCEU characters. There's also the question of Lady Gaga, with the actress and pop star rumored to be playing Harley Quinn in the upcoming Joker 2. Whether or not that comes to fruition, and what that means for Robbie's future, though, remains unclear.
