The Suicide Squad director James Gunn says he'd definitely be up to make a Harley Quinn solo movie. First created in 1992 for Batman: The Animated Series, the concept for Harley’s character was originally birthed as that of a new female henchman and love interest for Mark Hamill’s version of the Joker. After being well received by fans, Gotham’s new clown princess of crime has climbed the rungs of DC stardom in record time to become what DC Comic co-publisher Jim Lee once described as their new “fourth pillar behind Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman”.

In 2014, one year after the DCEU’s Man of Steel, it was announced that the first Suicide Squad film was in development with Australian actress Margot Robbie tapped to play the first big-screen version of the character. While reviews for 2016’s Suicide Squad were mixed, Robbie’s Harley was widely praised as a highlight of the film and she went on the reprise the role again in last year’s Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). More recently, Guardians of the Galaxy’s irreverent James Gunn has set his twisted mind to The Suicide Squad franchise in a sequel/soft reboot in which Robbie is due to return for her third outing as the fan-favorite character.

Gunn, who is well known for interacting with fans over social media, recently offered a quick Q&A opportunity for his Instagram followers. Saying “Headed home from set. Got a question?”, one eager fan was quick to ask if he “would ever consider making a stand alone Harley film?”. Gunn’s response was short and to the point, “I definitely would yes”. This admission would probably come as little surprise for fans, as Gunn has previously praised Robbie for her “graceful, magnificent, beautiful” portrayal of the character. He also went on to say that one of the action sequences he wrote for her was “probably [his] favorite four minutes of film [he's] ever shot before". A similar question was also fielded by the director in a previous Instagram Q&A, where Gunn said he discussed Harley Quinn's DCEU future with Robbie.

Those looking forward to The Suicide Squad and Robbie's latest Harley Quinn performance are probably ecstatic to hear Gunn’s willingness to reunite with the actress for a solo Harley Quinn film. Robbie herself has spoken about wanting to explore her character’s relationship with Poison Ivy on screen, and this may provide Gunn with a potential direction should the opportunity ever arise. In the meantime, viewers still have her big-screen return in August to look forward to.
