The showrunners behind DC Universe's Harley Quinn animated series, Patrick Schumacker and Justin Halpern, hint that Harley's (Kaley Cuoco) romantic relationship with Poison Ivy (Lake Bell) is on its way. As the DC streaming service's first animated show, Harley Quinn offered a colorful, NSFW take on the Clown Princess of Crime upon its premiere late last year. The show was well-received by fans and critics alike, and it was quickly renewed for a second season. That second season officially began last Friday with "New Gotham," picking up three weeks after where season 1 left off.

Season 1 of Harley Quinn had a lot to offer fans, from decidedly profane shenanigans to a wide array of DC characters. One things fans were missing though was the romance between Harley and Ivy. In the comics, the two have deep friendship that occasionally has turned into a proper romance. However, the first season of Harley Quinn kept the two platonic and even involved Ivy in a relationship with Kite Man (Matt Oberg). Halpern previously assured fans a romantic relationship between the two women would be explored later on, and now he's offered some more insight as to when.

While speaking to Newsarama about the newest season, Halpern and Schumacker opened up about the slowly developing relationship between Harley and Ivy. First, Schumacker explained that the plan was always to have the relationship arrive in season 2, after Harley had gotten enough time to properly distance herself from her previous fling with the Joker (Alan Tudyk). Once Harley had received the right amount of development, then the show could move onto a new romance. As Schumacker said:

We're pretty overt with it in season 2. It's 13 episodes, it's not a thing that we jumped into. It's definitely the payoff for the end of the season. It’s the big focus of the end of the season. But along the way shit happens. They do stuff.

Halpern then followed up with saying Harley's relationship with Ivy will explore "the reality of how messy, uncomfortable, and awkward it would be to figure out that you're in love with your best friend." Schumacker echoed those comments and reminded fans that Ivy is still with Kite Man, which will be another element for the ladies to contend with as they figure out this new facet to their relationship. Schumacker simply said, "It complicates things."

Harley Quinn has yet to be renewed for a third season, but if the second proves as successful as the first, fans can expect not to be disappointed. The second season is comprised of thirteen episodes, so there might still be a bit of a wait before Harley properly develops feelings for her best friend. The trailer for season 2 briefly showed the two women holding hands, further igniting fans' hopes that the comics romance will make its way into the show. It's only a matter of time now.
