Director Cathy Yan has weighed in on support for her film Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), thanking fans in the #ReasonsToSupportBoP movement. Birds of Prey was released last weekend and features the return of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. Robbie made her DCEU debut in 2016's Suicide Squad, making this film her second appearance as the character. Harley Quinn was considered a standout of the movie and is one of the few characters returning for next year's sequel/reboot The Suicide Squad with James Gunn at the helm.

Unfortunately, despite Harley Quinn's popularity, Birds of Prey hasn't done quite as well at the box office as DC and Warner Bros. hoped. However, it did have a better first Thursday than this weekend's new release, Sonic the Hedgehog. That film still managed to score the best box office opening weekend for a video game movie. Some are chalking Birds of Prey's worse than expected initial gross to its title. This led Warner Bros. to request a title change on movie theater websites, switching it to the more manageable Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey. However moves like that often feel too little, too late.

Luckily, though, many fans have still seen and enjoyed Birds of Prey. This led many to tweet out their reasons to support the film, with over ten thousand tweets making it trend in the United States. Taking to Twitter, Yan reacted enthusiastically to the #ReasonsToSupportBoP hashtag. She shared a tweet showing the trend, captioning it, "This is incredible? What is happening?! Thank you all so much! What a delight. I'm so happy right now." Check out Yan's tweet below:

Birds of Prey is just one of DC's biggest movies in the next few years. This June will see the release of Wonder Woman 1984, Patty Jenkins' long-awaited followup to 2017's Wonder Woman. That film will once again feature Gal Gadot's Diana Prince, as well as Chris Pine's surprise return as Steve Trevor, who died in the original movie. 2021 will have The Suicide Squad, Black Adam with Dwayne The Rock Johnson, and The Batman, featuring new caped crusader Robert Pattinson. Fans got an exciting first look at Pattinson in the batsuit earlier this week.

Though there are clearly things to look forward to after Birds of Prey, it's nice to see fans showing their support for the film. Critical reception to the movie has also been strong, making the box office numbers that much more perplexing. Birds of Prey is still just beginning its time in theaters, so there's always the potential for more people checking out the film later on. Hopefully, hashtags like #ReasonsToSupportBoP, as well as Yan's reaction, encourage others to see Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).
